'Moscow News' Prize-85

• The main MN prizes were won by Sergei Gusev (USSR) and Yelena Shushunova (USSR).
  

• The winners in the separate events of the combined exercises (who were also presented prizes by our newspaper) are -- women: Oksana Omelyanchik (USSR), beam and floor exercises; Shushunova, vault; Oksana Averkova (USSR), asymmetrical bars; men: Vladimir Gogoladze (USSR), floor exercises, parallel bars and horizontal bar; Valentin Mogilny (USSR), pommel horse, rings; Gusev, vault.
  

• The newspaper's prizes were vied for by 114 gymnasts (54 men and 60 women) from 29 countries: Algeria, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Hungary, Vietnam, the GDR, Spain, Italy, Canada, Cyprus, the PRC, the KPDR, Cuba, Morocco, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Syria, Tunisia, Finland, France, West Germany, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Yugoslavia, Japan and the USSR.
  

• Before the tournament opened the gymnasts held a meeting on "Gymnasts in the Struggle for Peace."  During the competitions a celebration was held in honor of the well-known Soviet gymnasts who are World War II veterans.
  

• Also held were seminars for judges and coaches on problems of judging and the new compulsory program.
  

• The USSR National Olympic Committee awarded its prizes to Miguel Soler (Spain) for the most difficult combination on the rings and Madalina Tanase (Romania) for the new original element performed at the tournament.
  

• Li Cher Khen (KPDR) and Ti Wuli (PRC) were given the V/O Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga prizes.  Li Chen Khen was the best overall performed among men and Ti Wuli among women.
  

• Shushunova was presented the prize of the Japanese newspaper the Chunichi Shimbun, as the best overall woman gymnast.
  

• The All-Union Voluntary Society of Booklovers gave its prizes to the women gymnasts who covered the greatest distance to Moscow -- to Georgina Garcia and Diana Floresel (both from Mexico); to Naima Elguati (Morocco), the youngest entry to the competition, and to Sylvio Kroll (GDR), the foreign gymnast who took part in six finals.
  

• Luisa Prieto (Cuba) was voted the most elegant and charming gymnast of the tournament.
