[COL] Lisa Kurc update
Lisa Kurc is recovering nicely after her surgery and was up and
walking
around yesterday. I had it wrong in my earlier report: she
was taken
to the hospital on Saturday, not
Sunday. Her parents arrived
today,
and she will probably be discharged this
Saturday. She will not be
with the team at regionals, but will likely travel with the
team to
nationals. The team showed focus in their practices
on Tuesday and
Wednesday and seems to be ready -- both physically and
mentally -- for
this weekend's meet. Lisa will be kept up-to-date on the team's
progress by phone. Junior Andrea Dewey remains the most
likely
replacement for Kurc
on vault. Georgia had been rotating
seven
gymnasts on beam and floor, Lisa's other two
events.

Subject:
Handstands.....
After I posed that question
about the workout routines I should follow as a
beginner
in the sport, I got many replies, so I would just like to thank
everyone who helped me out. I also want to basically sum up
what I got
from the various suggestions for any
other beginners out there. I got a
few messages
telling me that I should move from routine to routine, a few
messages stating that at times I should stay at one piece of
apparatus
until I accomplish what I set out for or
at least closed in on it. I got
some mail stating
that I should not try to specialize, and others that
said
I might want to work on one apparatus over and over and then move to
another, etc.... But overall, what
was stressed in most letters and what
was made
apparent to me by watching videos, reading books, talking to my
father, the ex-gymnast/collegiate city medals winner...15 of
em, (He wanted
me to
plug him...), and getting suggestions from most gymnasts are the
following things:
1. Start out with a basic
tumbling routine to loosen up. Swing on the
different
pieces of equipment, swinging is a very important skill and
strength/stamina building exercise.
2. Try to
maintain and achieve the highest degree of flexibility that you
can. Always work on your splits and stretch whenever you
can. If you
decide to run to build up stamina on
your off days, stretch extensively (I
would guess,
stretch gently before to loosen up a bit, and then a lot
afterwards
to prevent stiffness from running). Or instead of running,
swimming on your off days might be a good alternative to
take off the
strain on your legs and knees.
3.
Repeat over and over and over and over. Once you learn various tricks
and moves, put routines together which combines them in a
smooth, coherent
fashion. Practice these routines
over and over, perhaps something like 5-10
routines
on a piece of equipment, then move on (More repetitions during
competition season, more learning of new tricks during the
off-season).
4. End your workout with a basic strength training
session such as dips on
the p-bars, pushups, V-ups
(Raise legs and arms at same time while lying
down
to make the letter V), pullups, press handstands, leg
raises, etc...
5. HANDSTANDS!!!!!!!!! The most basic and important part of gymnastics. It
is used in basically every single event. Practice handstands
every single
day. You can never do enough.
Practice them on the low p-bars (Or high if
u have
a spotter), practice them on the floor, practice them on the rings
(Start
with a shoulder stand), and anywhere else you can do them. Do them
on your hands, then try knuckles, then maybe 3 fingers on
each hand,
etc... Vary
it, but DO IT.
6. Most important and above all, have fun. Dont be discouraged, it is
expected,
the best have failed over and over, but what makes them the
best, is they dont give up and
neither must you. Do gymnastics for
yourself,
although competitions and medals and honors are nice to have and
a good feeling for work well done, gymnastics should be
something you WANT
to do otherwise you will not
succeed. Have a good spirit when you enter
the
gym, be happy, have fun, experiment, try out new things if you want,
vary the routines, move from each piece of equipment in a
different order
every couple of workouts (Do p-barsfirst in one workout, maybe 3rd in
another, then last in another, etc...).
I tried my best
to filter out and combine all the letters I
received
into 6 steps which was hard but I think it sums it up pretty well
at least for us beginners. If anyone disagrees with
something or can add
something to the list, please
mail me or this list, I am more than willing
to get
more and more suggestions, try them, and use what works best.
The only major
question I have is:
1. When will i end this
letter?
2. Correct form for a handstand. I asked my father (once
again) and he
suggested that I try a handstand and
just get it down,. dont
worry about
form yet, a little arch or a little
pike wont hurt in the beginning
learning stages.
After I have my balance, then I should go concentrate on
correct
form. But my question is, what exactly is correct form? I heard
you might want a slight arch on the high bar or the p-bars,
but straight
body, head in line with you
shoulders, on everything else. Is this right?
Should I tilt my head up
facing the same direction as my butt is, or
should
I keep it straight, or tilt it behind me?
Thanks once again. Sorry to be bugging
everyone with my questions,
but as long as I have
them, I will be asking them. Thanks again...

FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APRIL 6, 1994
SCANLAN NAMED USA GYMNASTICS
PRESIDENT
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- USA Gymnastics announced today that it
has
selected Kathy Scanlan
of Seattle, Wash., as the organization's new
president. Scanlan
succeeds Mike Jacki, who resigned after 10
years to take a similar post with U.S. Skiing.
"This
is one of the most important positions within the Olympic
Movement,"
said Sandy Knapp, chair of the board of directors of USA
Gymnastics. "It was imperative that we find a
person with the
qualifications, skill, and stature
to lead this sport into the 21st
century. After an exhaustive search process, I am
certain we have
found such an individual in
Kathy. She brings a wealth of
management, financial planning and business skills which
will allow
USA Gymnastics to grow into new areas of service for our
membership, while maintaining our leadership position within
the
industry."
Scanlan
is currently a principal in the consulting firm of Scanlan,
Sorensen
and Potter, Inc., which specializes in management and
marketing
for sports events, institutions and facilities. The
company's
clients include World Cup USA.
Her extensive background in sports
management includes serving as
the Executive
Director of the 1993 World University Games, as
Executive Vice President of
the Seattle SuperSonics and Executive
Vice President for the Seattle Goodwill Games Organizing Committee.
"I
am honored to be selected by the Board of Directors to serve as
the president of USA Gymnastics," Scanlan
said. "This is an
incredible opportunity for me and my family, and a very
exciting
time for the sport of gymnastics. USA Gymnastics has had great
success on and off the competition floor and I welcome
the
challenge of helping to lend to its future
successes."
Scanlan was unanimously
recommended for the position by a seven-
member
search committee, representing all constituencies within the
USA Gymnastics membership. The recommendation of that group
was
endorsed by the Executive Committee and
approved by the Board of
Directors of USA Gymnastics.
Given
her commitments to World Cup USA, Scanlan will
officially
being on Aug. 1.

>Why? Unless you're a specialist (and even
they need some variety), I
would always try to
keep your training moving. Try to hit
at least two
>or three events a day. It may prove to be frustrating to spend
too long
on a single event.
There are
times when you really need to concentrate on something in
particular. For
example, after I'd been doing double fulls for some
time, I
couldn't do a single anymore. It didn't matter for a couple of years,
but
when they put it in the compulsory, I devoted
pretty much a whole workout
(about 3 hours of it)
to re-learning a full (I did get
around to some other
stuff that day, but not much,
and if the entire workout had been necessary, I
would
have taken it).

Miller and Dawes will be joined by National
Team members
Larissa Fontaine and Amanda Borden. Roethlisberger's
teammates include Mihai
Bagiu, Chainey Umphrey, Scott
Keswick, Paul O'Neill and Mark Sohn. O'Neill is a specialist
on

Coming off of a strong year of competition in 1994, the
U.S.
team is eager and very competent. Dawes had a very
successful
month of March, placing first at the American
Classic/World Championships
Trials, the McDonald's American
Cup and the International Mixed Pairs
competition with her
partner Roethlisberger. She
looks forward to Australia,
saying, "I was
in Australia when I was twelve years old for
my
first international competition. It
will be neat going
back there."
Roethlisberger
captured the International Mixed Pairs title
with
Dawes, defeating the Belarussian pair of Elena Piskun
and 1993 World
Champion Vitaly Scherbo. In addition,
Roethlisberger just
missed taking the McDonald's American Cup
from Scherbo. A fall on parallel bars, however, allowed
Scherbo to move
in and take the title.
Borden, Fontaine,
Keswick and Umphrey
also fared well at McDonald's American
Cup and
International Mixed Pairs.
The U.S. coaches
delegation to World Championships includes
