In Puerto Rico, one of the members of our gymnastics community is a man
who would go to the beach every Sunday and do and teach gymnastics (he
is a well-known local artist and former acrobat and hand-balancer). A
lot of the gymnasts would join him every week. There was one gymnast who
began his career on that beach, and he learned to do double backs right
there on the sand. We (meaning PR) had no spring floor (or a pit) until
1983. And remember those thin wooden "spring"boards people used to use?
We vaulted with one of those placed on top of another until 1984.

Subject: SEC Women's Televised on April 2nd.

SportsSouth televised the Women's SEC Championship today.

I just have to ask this question: When did the scores get so inflatted?

I haven't watched college championships for along time, and the
first 10 I can remeber was Kelly Garrison-Steves way back in the late
'80s, but I saw alot of high scores (9.925 + ) and one 10 today.


Does the NCAA use a different Code of Points than the International
Community and do they deduct for form errors? I saw alot of people
for example, use a cast on the high bar and not make it to handstand,
do release moves that were not that high, cowboy doubles, and have
general form errors that I thought required deductions but they
would still score high. One gymnast scored a 9.975 on vault (using a
handspring front pike with a hop!) Her form on the horse was not that good,
either, and her distance was barely a body length. I don't understand this
since i thought that a handspring front pike was not a 10 vault.

In general, I was impressed by Jenny Hansen, who I can remember as a junior
and seeing her still do piked full ins on floor was rather impressive. I don't
know many females who at age 20 can get her height. Other things: someone
called a move on the UB a "Wilson". I saw S. Khorkina does this at Worlds
and at the Goodwill Games. It was a giant (facing out) to a half turn into
Hect over the high bar with a half turn. Seeing this reminded me of a
move that E. Shushonova did at Seoul '88 and at Rotterdam '87 and it was
called a full twisting Tkatchev or a Markalov, I believe. If anyone
saw this or knows what a "Wilson" is and who is named after (Tracey from
Canada?), please tell me. I guess that I am far behind on the names of these
moves, since I have not competed in 8 years!

Subject: Brandy Johnson

The only info I could find about Brandy Johnson was from the latest issue of
IG. It says that she is teaching at Brown's metro and is training at Broadway
Gymnastics Center in Oriedo, FL. She is being coached by Jason Parker and
Stephanie Lenzini with overall supervision by Scott Johnson.

I was unable to find any info on Wendy Bruce.

They use their own code, which, unfortunately for the credibility
of NCAA gymnastics, seems to award scores based on crowd enthusiasm and
gymnasts celebrating rather than any sort of sensible code.
Also the difficulty ratings are quite ancient. The gymnasts are
doing more and more difficulty, but the code is still back in the 80's.
Aren't double backs and full-in double backs both D's? Someone said they
are. Even if a full-in is a E, so is a double layout, which has been done
in the NCAA for a few seasons. Also, the piked front vault is still a 10,
but the gymnasts have been doing barani-outs for some time. Also, the
full-twisting front vault was just recently performed by Hansen
(Kentucky). Hopefully this vault will be the only 10.00 vault in the next
code (Yurchenkos aren't allowed) but it may take a few years before it is
updated based on the current way of thinking. Unlike international
competition, the NCAA code is not locked in to the four-year Olympic
cycle, so one would hope the code would reflect that but it doesn't.

It is called a Markelev, but in the women's code it is named after
Khorkina (D element). Shushunova did a blind change into a Markolev, and
that is sometimes called a full-twisting reverse hecht, which is very
popular in NCAA gymnastics btw.
I don't know why the announcer would call it a Wilson. Probably
one of those "out there" things they say that make you say, "WHAT???"
Just for fun, what is the silliest thing anyone has ever heard an
announcer say? I liked when Cathy Rigby said in Rotterdam that Silivas
popularized back-to-back tumbling. Oksana who?

The NCAA uses the USGF Level 10 rules. They do go by the 4-year cycle,
but don't make all the changes that the FIG Code makes. The major
things change, but not all the elements devalued in the FIG Code are
devalued in NCAA, and the base score is 9.6 rather than 9.4. Btw,
failing to cast all the way to a handstand isn't necessarily a
deduction. There is such a thing as a cast not to handstand, which is
an A element. The cast to handstand is a different element and a B.

about the confusion of the "wilson" now that you mention it -ti does look
like something shushonova did-

but i thought maybe it came froma girl i used to train with in Portland
OR-about 3 years ago she was trying to learn a thachtev with a full
twist-she did it kinda funny looking so our coach kinda fixed it up and
called it a wilson-she ended up doing it at a few clinics etc. i am
wondering if the announcer got the name "wilson" from her because she
would always have to get it 'valued' before a meet by the judges- i odnt
know though because she never did it in an international meet or anything
but it was kinown around the area as a 'wilson'

1) where and what time in atlanta is the J.O. rhythmic nationals-how would
i go about getting tickets are do i bneed them early?

2)also i am looking for more information about the olympic congress and
pre-olympics in atlanta-is this open to the public? tickets? anything! :)
