I'm
afraid the situation is actually far worse. The litigation situation in
the United States, and particularly in California, where we
have one attorney
for about every 1400 people, has
deteriorated badly. It has reached the point
at
which the courts have become an avenue of personal enrichment. Justice is
a joke. If you are the owner of a gym and someone gets hurt
on your premesis,
even
if you have done everything in your power to prevent injury, you have
about a 50-50 chance of winning in court. Because the Gym I
managed was
financed by foreign interests, our
attorney estimated that in such a
circumstance the
chance of justice prevailing was less than 35 %.
There are so many
activities that we could not offer, including trampoline
teams,
cheerleading, rock-climbing, etc. simply because of our fear of
litigation. It has made gymnastics more expensive for
everyone, and it has
put many good gyms out of
business.
But we digress. I only wonder what kind of damage this litigous attitude and
its
apparently inexorable progress will do to the long term viability of
gymnastics in the USA.
Isn't it interesting that
Russia, Ukraine, Romania, and China have among the
lowest
numbers of attorneys per-capita in the world.

Aussie Gymnasts Tour Europe
From the AAP ...
Australia's
gymnasts leave next week for a four week tour of
Europe. There
they will compete in the British
National Championships to gain expirience
and gauge where they stand in terms of the rest of the
world.
Peggy Browne (AUS gym exec.) says "We've arranged for them
to compete in the
British national championships because Britain is
close to Australia in
world ratings in men and women. It
will also be an important competition for
our
gymnasts because it has compulsory
and optional team routines. We can
only qualify
for the Olympics as a team so our team
ranking is a critical
element in the
campaign."
Australia has not had the chance to test their mettle
as a team against the
new world order since both
the men and women were absent from Dortmund. They
have
also not had the compulsory expirience the rest of
the world now has.
"These tours and our selection
trials in August will answer many questions
for
Australian gymnasts. But October will give us the real answer on our
ranking This tour will expose our talent in the European
environment,
particularly
in the compulsory sections but how we fare as a team is really
what we want to know."
After the GBR Nationals
the AUS teams will go to Romania for a ROM-GBR-AUS
tri-meet
[Gee wonder who will win? <g>] and then on to France.
Oz will
also send a Jr. Women's team to the Pacific Alliance Juniors in
Colombia and a men's team to the University Games in Japan
(August).
The teams going to Europe are ...
MEN:
Andrei Kravtsov, Pavel Mamine, Nathan Kingston (Qld),
Bret Hudson,
Peter Hogan (NSW) Brennan Dowrick
(ACT), Daniel
Grigson, & Brendan Mand
(WA).
"Kravtsov [a former Soviet - duh with a name like
"Andrei Kratsov"] has added
depth to the team. He works hard, trains hard and is a good competitor.
The
24-year-old Dowrick is a great role model for the younger squad
members."
WOMEN: Rebecca Wilson (Qld), Zeena
McLaughlin, Susana Le, Shani Earl (Vic),
Sarah
Prosser (WA), & Katarina Frketic (NSW).

Re: AGA and Wrist guards
To tape or not to tape (use
wrist guards, braces, etc.)?
I had two sore ankles during my
freshman year of college (the result of
sprains to
both during senior year of high school and of the freshman -- not
fifteen -- nearly twenty). I taped both ankles all the time. I don't know
that
it made them weaker, but it's clear to me that it prevented them from
getting stronger.
The summer following freshman year, with the season over,
I decided
to get rid of my tape dependency. I
quit taping cold turkey (but I
was tumbling and
vaulting only into a pit). I would
tumble and stop when my
ankles hurt too much, and
eventually they stopped hurting altogether. I also
lost
the weight, which no doubt helped (but it wasn't the only thing, because
my ankles had hurt and I had been taping them before I
gained it).
Just my $0.02
:-)
