To late.  We ran into freaknik on Friday afternoon. Didn't know anything
about it.  We went to the underground Mall and got bombarded.  Scared the
living daylights out me.  The college kids would try to grab my daughter to
take pictures with.  And then we got caught in traffic for almost two hours
just to get two block away.  I have never seen anything like it.  I have been
though Mardi Gras now for ten years and I thought I have seen it all. But
this beat the cake.  Your where right to advice people from going.  Before we
left on Sunday, we picked up a local news paper.  They had looted seven
stores and had done over $500.000.00 worth of damage.  The locals were
telling us they are trying to move it New Orleans.  But the Mayor already
told them no. THANK GOD.

Subject: Svetlana Boginskaya

I was absolutely delighted to see Svetlana Boginskaya compete at the Visa
Invitational.  She is a marvelous gymnast and a great artist.  However, last
time I saw her compete, she was a profoundly sad and burnt out young lady
who had announced her retirement.  Then I turn on the TV on Saturday and
there she is, looking great with a smile I have never seen her wear.

For some of us who don't subscribe to any of the gymnastic 'zines, would
someone out there please give me/us a rundown on Svetlana's return?  If she
is applying for citizenship, who is sponsoring her?  Is she getting married?
I used to work with Russian emigres back in the bad old days of communism,
when the US would grant US citizenship to just about any Soviet that asked
(after a five year waiting period). It is now no longer so easy for them to
get it.  I am thrilled that she is here, but very puzzled and curious as to
how she ended up in Karoly's gym.

Life is apparently looking up for her.  I wish her all the happiness success
she deserves.

This argument has been made regularly since modern gymnastics emerged as a
mainstream athletic endeavor, and it is as much falderal today as ever.

Generally, the concerned voices who call for gymnastics to be toned down and
tricks to be reigned in are those who fear that they or their favorite
gymnastics will be unable to keep up.

Nobody should reward routines with great tricks but poor form. But nobody
should penalize excellent routines with virtuosity, originality, and risk.

Ian,

Thanks for the invite... I'll take you up on both offers.

I will be arriving in Oakland on Wednesday, March 10th
sometime just around noon (don't have the flight plans here in
front of me).  With me will be: Shane Defreitas, John Kolb,
Aaron Macintyre, Scott Miller, Rustin Davis, and Bradley
Golden.  Jason Graham would have been with us but he broke his
damn thumb on  p. bars just before regionals.

I will also be meeting with my sister who lives out there.  She
is kinda on the wild side... I guess you'll just have to see
for yourself.

Welp,  bye for now and congratulations again on a fine finish
this year!

See ya in about a week and a half!

also throw them, and I could be forgetting some), several full-ins
(including a laid out one from Beth Wymer, who knocked my socks off) and
vaults which would all be 9.8 value or higher. YIKES!

This regarding Aimee Trepanier's floor routine. I think she
had enough difficulty in those two passes, plus in her dance,
to get a 10 start. However, I was informed today that she would
have received a .1 deduction for not performing a third pass.
I was then told that any salto combination would "pass as a pass".
So, would her roundoff, full-twisting backhandspring have made
it the last pass, and therefore have avoided the decduction?

Adriana, you seem to know about stuff like this. I appeal specifically
to you. HELP! Personally, I think even if the routine only has two
passes, and has sufficient difficulty, it deserves a 10 start, and
Trepanier's routine really appealled to me...so..?

Hey, Chris, you forgot Jennifer Wood and Larissa Lowing at LSU,
and some girls who are at Florida, all Canadian gymnasts. Yes,
I knew they were from Canada, but I was just mentioning Umeh as
one of several performing a double layout. Sorry for the confusion.

Also, someone mentioned a while back that "Where was Jenny Hansen?"
"The national team coulda used her." I think it was Amy. Well, hansen
is the perfect case of one of those athletes who did NOT flourish at
the elite level and who EXCELS at college gymnastics. To my knowledge,
Hansen competed at nationals in 1990, 1991, and 1992, but never made
the national team. She also competed in 1989, too, I think. Never a
national team member, also I think never did any better than 25th or so.

Hansen and a few others who excelled at the college level (Aimee Trepanier
Suzanne Metz and Shelly Scharrer of Utah, Dana Dobransky and DeeDee Foster
of Alabama, certainly others I am forgetting) never really "made" it at
the elite level (oh, forgot Beth Wymer of Michigan :)) Then again, there
are athletes who were from a VERY successful elite career (Melissa Marlowe
most notably) who did very well in college...and then there is Kim Kelly,
who hasn't really ever put it together at a national championship.

More than happy to oblige :) -- only *two* acrobatic series are required
in a women's FX routine.  An acro series is a series of at least three
acrobatic elements, one of which must be a salto.  One of the acro series
has to have 2 saltos, and stuff like double backs don't count; they have
to be separate saltos.  Incidentally, neither a roundoff nor a
full-twisting back handspring is a salto.  A salto means there is no
hand support.

Does that mean that you think there should be no banned moves?  I'm
thinking specifically of roll-out tumbling, which is no harder than
tumbling to the feet, but is much more dangerous.  Do you really believe
that the only motive for changing the code of points to discourage this
sort of move is the hope that less skilled gymnasts will be able to keep
up?

I'm starting to wonder whether there should be a fifth event added to
women's gymnastics (although I know it's sacrilege to say so in polite
company :-) ).  I don't kow whether I'd support this or not, but if women
competed on high bar (or perhaps a modified version of high bar), they'd
get to have a thinner rail to increase the safety of one-arm moves and
other moves where peeling off is a strong possibility.  At the same time,
the uneven bars could be moved closer together again to facilitate some of
the interesting transitions that have become impossible to do.

Short of this drastic solution, could uneven bars be made somewhat thinner
now that no one is doing beats anymore?

Regarding Amy Trepanier's floor routine:  Yes you can fulfill all of your
acrobatic requirements on floor with only two passes.  To do this, one
pass must have one salto and the other pass would have to have two saltos
and all three saltos would have to be different.  If I remember she did
something like full-in for the first pass and a double full punch front
for the second, or something similar.  That fulfills all of her Special
Requirements.  Often at big meets, however, the judges make up rules that
are unwritten so they can separate the athletes by artificial means.  So
if you heard that they were taking 0.1 off routines that only had 2
passes, that is very possible.  Some judges just cannot handle that the
athelete are meeting their requirments and need to find other ways to keep
their scores lower.  It is solely up to the judges and the coaches and
athletes often are unaware of these occassions and therefore cannot
prepare routines that would be able to meet these unwritten requirements.

*giggle* I hate to think how many people are in the process of
posting the tumbling info...Anyway, I was about to post the answer
myself; went and asked our college coach today. Seems you must
have at least two passes, one of which must have two saltos (which
is, of course, what all my mail today has been about ;))

In any case, I have to wonder if the judges were still downgrading
Trepanier. Judging from what I know of the four routine above her
or equal to her in the appartus finals (Umeh, Angeles and Hansen tied
for first, she tied with Leah Brown for fourth) I have to say, Trepanier's
routine appealed to me more than brown's (Trepanier had better music,
better dance, and more attitude!) and also Angeles (same deal as with
Brown). *sigh* I guess sometimes you just have to accept the judges
have their own unwritten agenda.

Last I heard Silivas was working in Atlanta for a club where some other
romanians lived.

As for Onodi, she will be in Hungary for the majority of the summer, but if you
would like to write her you can do that at the following address:

a one-arm before '92 was a B.  I do not know if
it was ever worth more.

Subject: Sites for next year's NCAA Champs

A little introduction here....

My name is Monica and I work as a chemical engineer at Pacific
Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Washington, USA. I am not or ever have been
a gymnast. I do, however, really love and appreciate this sport, which is why
I subscribe to this list. I enjoy picking up the knowledge about scoring
and the names of the different apparatus moves.  I can tell the knowledge
is clicking in when I watch meets live or on TV.  Sometimes I have to
wonder if even I possess more knowledge than many of these idiot sport
commentators.

I've been a fan since watching Mary Lou Retton in the 1984 Olympics.  I
have recently taken an interest in collegiate gymnastics and have attended
the women's events locally at Oregon State and U of Washington.  I
especially enjoy Oregon State and have religiously attended their meets
for the last five years.

Does anyone know where the NCAA Regionals (all five sites) and the
Championships will be held for 1996? I understand that these things have
already been figured out.

Thanks!

Hi Everyone,

All this talk about one arm releases made me remember Anna Shakhoval of
the Ukraine.  At the 1993 Nikon she did two releases which, I'm pretty
sure, were caught with one arm.  At the time my only thought was
'what the !@#* was THAT!?'  Unfortunately the routine wasn't included in
the TV highlights so I haven't seen it since.  But she scored a 9.75 for
it which was the third highest score of the meet (Rusan 9.825 FX &
Grosheva 9.775 UB were higher).  So I'm guessing the judges gave them a high
value.

Anyway, a friend in Europe saw her at the Chareloi Jnr Tournament about
the same time and described her UB ".....a full pirouette to one-armed
tcatchev (like Shushunova) twice, once catching with the left and once
with the right arm".  From my pathetic memory they seemed more like
Markelovs (straddeled like Khorkina) caught with one arm.  They seemed to
hang in the air a long time and the crowd was totally confused (or at
least it had everyone sitting near me scratching their heads!)

If anyone has the routine on tape, and can properly describe the move I'd
really appreciate it.  Then again didn't she compete at the 93 Hilton?
Did she use those 'wierd' releases there?

Michelle

P.S.  Remember Shevchenkos crouched spin on BB?  What's it's value in the
code?  Does it have one?  It always seemed to be as difficult as her
tumbling, and I can't recall anyone else having done it.......Wouldn't
you like it to be an 'E' just to see all the 'code suckers' go spinning
off one by one onto the mats ;-)

From the DPA:

"World and European champions from the former USSR and Romania competed
in the 'Tournament of Champions' over the weekend in Cottbus for 100,000
DM in prize money."

The article then goes on to say that Andreas Wecker enjoys gardening at his
cottage outside of Berlin -- when he's not training for 7 hours a day,
that is.  He hasn't trained much in the last 5 weeks because he's had the
flu.  Valery Belenky (KTV Stuttgart) leads the Bundesliga in prize money
(10,169 DM).  He's ranked 1st on V, PH and PB; 3rd on HB; and 8th on FX
and R.

Some of the female gymnasts in Cottbus were Milosovici and Gogean (ROM),
Podkopayeva (UKR), Khorkina (RUS), and Kreibich and Pioch (GER).

NO RESULTS WERE PRINTED! :(
