Marianna Webster
Did Marianna Webster compete at 94 USA
Nationals? If so, where did she
place?

re : '95 NHK Cup
I'm not sure that I
appreciate Debbie's comment "Kosuge won by
default (Sugawara put her hands down after her double layout
on
floor)".
Sugawara clearly made a
mistake and should be penalised as the rules
dictate. She
took a gamble on a difficult skill and obviously
couldn't
pull it round.
Anyway, if you start thinking that anyone who wins an
AA by default
just because a competitor makes a mistake, then think about
Mary Lou in '84 -
Szabo fell off bars in the team competition
(from memory) and as such gave
Retton a .25 head start going into the AA. Retton
deserved her medal,
because she didn't make the
mistakes of others.
Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but isn't AA
meant to determine the best allround
competitor? In
many cases this ends up being the most consistent
competitor
ie the one who makes the least mistakes.
Just my thoughts, Simone.

Re: National HS Champs
I know that here in Maryland they just sort of
randomly picked us, before
counties or anything(
we don't have states cause there are only two counties)
I wouldn't exactly say that there is such
a range of gymnasts, because I'm a
level 8 and I
was definitely among a minority of those not throwing double
backs or double fulls. But it doesn't really matter what level
you are. I
came
in almost dead last on all the events, but I wasn't really expecting
anything else competing against girls who seemed to be
mostly elites, level
10's and nine's.
The focus of the meet is more just that you got to be there
competing nationally and that you had fun while you were
there both competing
and in general, not how well
you scored or placed. It's really awesome to get
to
meet gymnasts from all over who are all exactly your age (seniors in HS),
and I had a great time.

>You
have had the best experience gymnastics or any other sport can offer:
you got to meet others from around the country, you got to
compete in a
championship meet, and you were able
to focus on enjoying it and just
soaking up the
feeling of "being a part of Nationals!"
>
>This is what
makes the National HS Championships such a great meet, a
unique event, and an important part of the sport, even
though it is not
necessarily where our future
Olympians will come from. Every so
often, such
an athlete will participate, but they
just add to the greatness of the
event; it's
already a great event for those that participate.
>
>It is truly
a shame that so many of our fine athletes, both boys and girls,
will never get to experience interscholastic varsity sports
at their best,
since the number of interscholastic
gymnastics programs are so few.
There
is also, local recognition and enjoyment
that comes from participation in
such a program
due to its connection to the athlete's school in spite of the
fact that many USAG gymnasts are far more experienced and
will score higher
and compete at a higher
level.
>
>Once again, Bravo to all the competitors and those who
worked tirelessly to
make this event happen, along
with the nameless varsity gymnastics coaches
(us
dinosaurs) who often have to work in less than desireable
situations,
and put up with all sorts of problems
to be able to provide this experience
to public
school athletes. To any HS competitiors reading this,
go back and
thank your coach for not bailing out
and taking a job coaching in a club
program
somewhere other than your high school.
