The highest-placing teams from compulsories compete in the last session
of optionals.  I don't know how compulsories will be scheduled, since
they switched back to teams competing together in Dortmund (IMHO a
mistake -- now entire teams will be stuck with lousy early-session scores,
instead of spreading the lousy scores around to all the teams).

Subject: Spanish translation opportunity

This is from the forum on USAGO!:

Hola amigos! !Requiero ayuda!

USA Gymnastics is going to offer a version of _Technique_ magazine in
the Spanish language. The current plan is to offer this publication on
a quarterly basis.

This will be provided to Spanish speaking countries as well as made
available to USAG Spanish speaking members in the U.S.

USAG will provide space in the publication for "official" information
and notices from the Pan American Gymnastics Union (PAGU).

I need to find someone willing to work on this project who is fluent in
Spanish and fully familiar with gymnastics terminology who can:
>  assist in translating previously published _Technique_
   articles,
>  assist in the preparation of PAGU information (this will
already be in Spanish, but will need to be typed into MSW),
   and
>  proof-read final layouts before we take each issue to print.

I am seeking someone fluent in Spanish and fully familiar with
gymnastics terminology. This person can work from home, but the
following considerations are important:

1. Access to a fax machine
2. Ability to provide fully formatted text files in Microsoft
Word including all appropriate accents that can be "placed"
directly into Pagemaker for layout. (These can be sent on
   diskette or uploaded on Delphi.)
3. Willingness to work on this project in a timely manner to
   meet publication deadlines.

USAG will pay for this assistance.

If YOU are interested (or know someone who might be qualified) please
fax (371-237-5069), email (Delphi address: USGF; Internet address:
USGF@delphi.com), or snail-mail (USGF, Pan American Plaza, Suite 300,
201 S.  Capitol, Indianapolis, IN 46225) the requested information to
Steve Whitlock.

You can address telephone inquires to Steve Whitlock, 317-237-5050 x 236.

Please include the following information:
1. Resume
2. Proposed translation fees for:
   > Translating various articles
     (English->Spanish and Spanish->English)
   > Inputting (typing) Spanish documents into Microsoft Word
     documents.
   > Proofreading
3.  Other considerations...

NOTE: For those who make my final selection list, I will ask that you
provide a sample translation of an article that I provide.

Gracias!

Steve Whitlock

Bits:
====

- I thought overall the scorings were quite harsh, especially since the
scores have been escalating in recent meets. But anyway the placings
  were about right.

- The young Russian Evgeni Podgorni had an interesting dismount off the
parallel bars: a double front salto with half-twist. He only got 9.275
  for his efforts though.

- Vitaly Schebo was visibly struggling throughout the meet, a few steps
off the dismount on the parallel bars today, although he did quite well
  on the high bar.

- Sergei Kharkov was unexpectedly here, but only on the parallel bars.

- When Rustam Charipov was on the parallel bars, his coach was there
actually holding one end of the bars for him WHILE HE IS PERFORMING.
I thought that is not allowed? (Or at least a deduction?) He won the
  event in the end.

- Evgeni Chabaev continued his poor meet, finishing last on the vault when
he saw down on his second attempt. He was fifth in the high bar though.

- Dina Kochetkova still had her right ankle bandaged and she again landed
on her knees in her final tumble on floor (full-in back-out). Dina is a
redhead this time and Oksana Fabrichnova was a blonde with long curly
hair. Oksana seems to be in much better form than in recent times, she
was actually smiling in the middle of her floor routine.

- Liliya Podkopayeva looked much fitter than last month and duly won the
floor event, although there was still not much choreography in it IMHO.
She fell off the beam in her "Korbut" though (I know there are
discussions that Olga wasn't actually the first one who did that but you
  know which move I mean!).

Ta-ra folks!

If anyone is interested, Mary Lou Retton is featured in this Sunday's Mini
Page (a children's insert in many newspapers).  They frequently have
gymnasts--I can recall Dominique Dawes and Michelle Campi as two who have
been in it.

I know this is early, but does anyone know if NBC will broadcast the Atlanta
Olympics live?  I guess this depends on what time competitions will take
place, but I just wanted to know whether I'm going to have to avoid other
networks who release results before events are televised.

Subject: Li's Vault?

I wondered it anyone knew what Li Xiaoshuang's first vault was at the '94
worlds in the event final. His second vault was so beautiful (handspring
full twist front pike) but under-rotated and I know he got a 9.7 for his
first so I was curious what it was. They chose to only show the vault he
struggled with on TV in the U.S.

Also, perhaps Sherwin can answer something for me since he just saw Scherbo
perform. Do you know it he did his new release move on HB that he's talked
about? In an interview last fall he mentioned some spectacular move that
nobody had ever done before and he had mastered it. I have no idea what it
is and perhaps someone can shed some light on the subject.

Thanks,
Orion

Subject: dream team

Now that tickets are available for Atlanta, I thought it might be
fun to start speculating on who we each think would make the best
U.S. team (I think about this many nights when I'm having insomnia  :-))

So *my* dream team, as of now, would be made up of be following gymnasts:
send
Shannon Miller
Kim Zmeskal
Dominique Dawes
Amanda Borden
Dominique Moceanu
Jennie Thompson
Doni Thompson

So  what do y' all think?
-- Kiki

P.S. I just found this list a few weeks ago and I'm *thrilled*!  I had no
clue there were so many of us  hard-core  gym fans!  BTW, does anyone know
when tickets for the Olympic trials will be available?  I live in the
Boston area and can't wait...
