Umm, no it's most certainly *NOT*.
European
Championships are currently a bi-annual type event and this is the
"off"
year for men's, women's, and rhythmic Sr's.
Last
year the men meet in Prague and the girls in Stockholm. Ivankov
took the
men's AA title and Belarus stunned Russia
for the team title (they could have
up to 6 or 7
gymnasts, with 5 on each event, and 4 scores counting). Gogean
took the women's AA and Romania walked away with the team
title as expected.
It was the first time that team medals were awarded
for Sr.'s. It was also
the first time that the Jr.
(M&W) titles were contested at the same time as
the
Sr.'s. In the Jr. Division the AA winners were Evgeny Zhukov of
Russia
(it was his second consecutive Jr.
Euro title) for the men and Alexandria
Marinescu
of Romania for the women. There was no team title for the Jr.s
this
time around (if there had been, Russia would
have easily won the men's and
Romania the women's based on indivdual scores).
The only European Championships
*this* year are the Rhythmic Group and Jr.
sections,
and that's only because those athletes didn't get a European Cup
like everyone else (the RSG European Cup was for Sr.
individuals only).
The results Mara got from the AP (which were marked
only with "European
Championships results") are the same as the
ones that Sherwin has been
faithfully posting
after getting to see the comp. live on EuroSport.

Because when they were with their geographical
area's gymnastics association,
the other (Arab)
countries wouldn't invite them to anything. In '87 or
thereabouts
(I think -- can someone check this?), they asked to switch to the
European
association and, needless to say, the request was granted.
