  Hi from sunny down under

Re:   Some Code changes.. etc. 8th February 1995

The Hristakieva on the Code change last year was number
4.505 and this is the vault that has been changed from a
10.00 Start Value to 9.90 Code Number 4.410.  The
description is Roundoff flic-flac on - 1/2 turn and salto
  forward stretched off (Hristakieva).

Yes, I believe we will see more variety in the vaults presented.

The only official changes were as listed - the judges and
technical representatives to International meetings in May were
canvassed for opinions on many elements and concepts, but the
only changes for 1995 were the Popa to C, Front flyspring to A,
Front salto stretched with one and a half twist to D and the
  vault as discussed above.

The apparatus is being measured from the top surface of the
landing mats (for women 12 cm) but the height of the apparatus
will be adjusted accordingly (ie the vault and beam would be
108 cm from the top surface of a 12 cm mat).

Gymnastics-Dozens of Chinese gymnasts injured in accidents

BEIJING, Nov 28 (Reuter) - Dozens of Chinese gymnasts have been injured and
some of them permanently handicapped in sports accidents, according to an
official survey published in the Press Digest newspaper on Monday.

"Initial information from the results of the survey show that injuries among
Chinese athletes are rather serious," the newspaper said.

The three-year investigation into athletes from 13 sports was carried out by
the health committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative
Conference, an advisory body to the parliament.

It found that out of 6,340 athletes, 3,832 -- or 59.6 percent -- suffered
sporting injuries.

"The higher the class of the athlete, the more serious the nature of the
injury," the newspaper quoted the survey as finding.

Injuries were particularly common in the 70-member gymnastic team, with many
broken bones and 17 of the injured requiring surgery. Gymnasts were treated
for injuries 314 times in the three years of the investigation, it said.

Of gymnasts participating in the 1993 Chinese national championships, 17
suffered injuries, while 23 gymnasts who finished in the top three in
international competition since 1990, were injured. Half of all those were
described by medical experts as being permanently handicapped.

>From 1978 to 1992, official statistics from the State Sports Commission
reveal that 119 athletes were handicapped after being injured, the newspaper
said.

It cited the example of female gymnast Huang Ruifen, the only gymnast to be
three times world champion in acrobatic gymnastics, who is now handicapped
and living on just 200 yuan ($23) a month.

She was first injured at the age of 15 when she broke her leg and injured a
tendon, but continued to compete despite her injuries and has lost the use of
both her legs, it said.

Awhile back, you all may remember that I offered a Temple "Save an
Endangered Species" t-shirt to the person who sent in the most letters
for the NCAA campaign.  That person is Lisa Cozzens!  Lisa, the shirt
will be mailed this weekend...

I have a couple of questions reguarding the recent World Team Championships.
First, why was Shannon allowed to skip trials and use her USA Championship
scores to determine her ranking when Dominique Dawes won every gold at
Nationals over Shannon?  When was the last time Shannon actually had to
complete in an entire trials?  Also, was Shannon awarded the team silver,
even though she only competed compulsories and then left?

For those of you lucky enough to get ESPN2 (not me :-(),
TV Guide lists an hour-long program covering a meet
of the Lady Bulldogs of Georgia hosting Alabama.

The program will be shown twice:

and repeated a few hours later at
Saturday 2/17 2-3 a.m.. EST

>Wow, imagine my surprise when I walked into such a huge meet by
accident, on my way back to my dorm.  I hadn't even heard about it, but
anyway, the 1995 Fiesta Bowl, sponsored by the Arizona Twisters, was held
>Feb 3-5 at PE West at Arizona State University.

The above brings to mind a question.  Currently, publicity for gymnastic
events tends to be mediocre at best and non-existent at worst.

(1) Does the 'gymnastics community' *want* to increase publicity, or is it
better as a small sport, with a small community of interested individuals?

(2) If the answer to the above is 'increase publicity', how should it be
done?

The floor is open for your thoughts...

Hi from Anne in sunny down-under

A couple of elements have been changed in value by the FIG Women's
Technical Committee, the changes to take effect on 1st June 1995.

Vault Yurchenko (roundoff) onto the horse, half turn and stretched
front salto off (formerly number 4.505) is now 4.410 with a Start
Value of 9.90.

On floor:

The Popa (straddle pike jump with full turn) was D now C

Stretched front salto with one and a half twist was E now D

The front flyspring - was B now A (regardless of whether to one or
two feet).  This change will dramatically affect the acrobatic
series bonus for many gymnasts.

Can anyone help by posting the results of the Peachtree classic
where a group of Australian gymnasts took part?  Would appreciate
any available results - thanks!

Well thank you, bita, spaceba and merci to the FIG!  I suspect we'll be
seeing a bit of whining and moaning from certain federations about this.
This is what I'd been hoping they'd do, make some adjustments in time for
Sabae, and Atlanta.  I'm glad they stuck their neck out and fixed these
glaring errors that have significantly imho decreased the level of
gymnastics that we've seen since Barcelona.

Boy will I miss that.  Such a beautiful dance element ;-)

Consequentally, is the layout front full now a C?

Originally, 4.505 was the layed out Yur. half (Hristakieva), but there was an
update to the Code which changed it to 4.507, and  4.505 became a yur 1/2 on,
tucked 1 1/2 off (Ivantcheva)... I'm assuming its the Hristakieva that was
devalued, but could someone who knows for sure please confirm?  Thanks.

So does this mean that out of a half-on it's still worth a 10.0?

Subject: Trampolining goes Internet

Dear gymners,

my name is Martin from Germany. I hope I do not bother anybody with
this message because it is not really about gymnastics...

But this is for all of you who are not only interested in gymnastics but also in
trampolining (which is pretty similar and often used to train difficult tricks).
Here is some information:

There is a trampoline homepage and a trampoline mailing list (like this one)
available since the end of last year.

The trampoline mailing list works like the gymn mailing list. Of course it is not
so big yet, because it is still new (so your post box will not get overloaded :-) )
but it is growing. If you want to subscribe to this list all you have to do is
send a message that says

      sub trampoline

to    infomail@wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de

Then you will automatically receive a short information how everything works
and  how to unsubscribe (i.e. send "unsub trampoline" to the same address).

If you think that is too difficult you can send me message a and I will put you
on the list.
My address:

kubicka@wiwi.uni-frankfurt.de

If you have a browser like Mosaic, WinWeb, MacWeb,
Lynx, or the like, you will find the initial page under the URL

http://este.darmstadt.gmd.de:5000/misc/tramp/

or for the English version

http://este.darmstadt.gmd.de:5000/misc/tramp/trhome_en.html

This page is your root for discovering all information about
trampolining.
Historical background information and descriptions of competition rules
and judging as well as pictures give an impression of this nice and
skilful sport to anyone who stumbles on these pages. Active
trampoliners find other interesting things: A 'diary' link reveals a
schedule of upcoming trampoline events. The corresponding
announcements are added where available, and after the competition,
you may perhaps find a result list. In addition, the 'top three' of
each main event of the current and previous years are gathered in a
'result overview'. One important page is the collection of addresses
of clubs, universities, organizations, etc. and especially email
addresses of active and passive trampoliners. In the end, another page
is dedicated to literature references about trampolining.

These pages are open for everyone and are waiting for your
contributions and addresses. Whoever is able to use WWW is invited to
use these pages. The more people read them the more can contribute to
them! All suggestions, addresses, result lists, etc. from any reader
are welcome - this is the only way to keep the pages up-to-date. But
don't be surprised if the structure of the pages has changed since
your last visit, they are steadily evolving due to all new
information.

Until now, most of the WWW pages are in German, but you may
change this - just provide English articles!

Thanks for reading this

Martin
