promotional video: looking for rare talent
Hello. An ad agency in
Europe working on a promotional video for home gym
equipment
wishes to include a short sequence of a woman doing full pull ups
hanging from a bar with a single hand (without any help from
holding the wrist
with the other hand or swinging
the legs). The sequence would
ideally show 3 or
4 consecutive reps (or more if
possible). Would it be possible to find a woman
gymnast
capable of such performance? I would appreciate any info or advice which
could lead to finding such talent. Thanks in advance.

I received this question and couldn't answer it myself since I'm
not familier
with things
like this. If anyone can answer it then please respond to Eddy
van der Rijst at
<evdrijst@dds.nl>.
"At my club we work a lot with
'mini-trampoline'. Are they also working with
it
in the US? If yes, what jumps (is it the right word?) are they
doing?"
Thanks,
Susan

Re: Belated Us vs. UKR Thoughts/Superstars
Please lets not get started
again on "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes" We
already
had a long discussion on that!
Is the superstars of gymnastics show the same on that was in
Chicago
back in April? I heard they were airing it in July, but
it that the same
one?

Did anyone attend the
superstars of gymnastics in April? (The one showing
on
thursdday)
If so, how was it.
Especially Kim Zmeskal. Thanks.

Re: Belated Us vs. UKR Thoughts/Superstars
The "Superstars of
Gymnastics" show that will air this Thursday was taped in
Philadelphia
on April 5 (according to TV
Guide. Like I had thought
before,
it will definitely re-air on Saturday, July
15 at 12 noon central (1 pm
eastern).

The superstars
is the one filmed in Philadelphia.
Has Sherbo in it (he
didn't
make it to Chicago). I don't know
of other differences.

Well
it's actually most of
the same competitors but a very different show.
It was
taped in early April at the Philadelphia Spectrum Arena in
Pennsylvania. It was organized by Paul Ziert (publisher
of _International
Gymnast_ and long time University of Oklahoma
coach) and sponsered by the USA
Television Network & Paul Mitchell among others.
It
featured Bart Conner, Nadia Comaneci, Svetlana Boginskaya,
Vitali Scherbo,
Kim Zmeskal, Valeri Liukin, Valentine Mogilny, Olga Bicharova-Mogilny, Jarrod
Hanks, Diane Durham,
Dominique Moceanu, Lavinia Milosovici, Gina Gogean,
Nadia
Hategan, Evgeny Marchenko & Natasha Redkova,
a troupe of dancers from
LA, and others.
It was an extremely
theatrical show created with TV in mind. Dramatic
lighting,
music on all events, "theme" choreography for the varous sections
of
the show. I'd say that group performances were stressed over indivdual
routines.
The
follow-up show in Chicago was a more traditional gymnastics exhibition
(along the lines of the Danskin
show in Mexico City last year and the
post-Olympic
tours) sponsered by IMG.
As has been said ad
nauseum the Philadeplhia
show will air on the USA Network
at 9 PM (EDT)
this Thursday night (July 13th).

Bart and Nadia
Unfortunately, I didn't know about this discussion
group at the time
that Bart and Nadia got
engaged... so if there was any discussion
about
this engagement, I missed it...
But... with the Superstars of
Gymnastics coming up this week, I'm
wondering...
well, WAS there any discussion of this?
I guess what I
really want to know is: does
anyone else think this is kind of an odd
pairing?
I
thought Bart was a confirmed bachelor.
Of course, there's
absolutely nothing wrong
with being a confirmed bachelor, and what
people
do with their private lives is their own business. But
they've
made such a public spectacle out of this engagement that I'm
just thinking: what's the deal? Is it all out of some desire to
spawn a super-human gym child? Jeez, imagine the psychological
pressure.
I have the feeling I'm about to get
flame-broiled, but I seriously
want to know the
answer to this and don't know where else to seek
info.
Thanks,
Chip

When
I first heard the news, my initial reaction was "Well that's a match
made
in some agent's heaven." Nadia, after all, has had her share of
bad press
and could use a little "image
assistance." The episode with Constantin
Panit when she first arrived here in '89 will haunt her for
awhile.
And the article in Life magazine (did
anyone else read it?) painted
an awful picture of
her.
But when I saw the profile on Nadia's return to Romania I came
away
feeling like Bart and Nadia may actually be
in love. Who knows?

that he's gay? I think this was the
rumor for awhile.
Oh well, I wish them
the best. I hope their relationship
is for real and this
is not just some publicity
stunt.

Re: Bart and Nadia
Hi, Chip:
The explanation that Bart's
offered in interviews is along these lines:
When Nadia escaped from Romania
and finally ended up in the US,
separated from the
guy who helped her escpae, harried,
and not knowing what to do, she called Bart because she
remembered
him from when they had known each other
from competition during
their amateur
careers. He told her she could come
out to
Oklahoma and stay as long as she needed a place to
stay.
And when she was out there, they became fast friends
and then fell in love.
Not too surprising when you consider
that
they should have a lot in common.
I'm sure we've all
seen much more unlikely
happy couples.
>they've made such a public
spectacle out of this engagement that I'm
Public displays of affection
are a matter of local etiquette and
personal
taste, and you also have to bear in mind that the media have
made a big deal of this engagement, thus increasing the
"goopiness"
factor. I don't think the Bart and Nadia thing
has been any more
goopy than other sports
engagements (like, say, that of US pairs
skating
team Jenni Meno and Todd
Sand, which has also been
covered ad nauseum in the media).
One of the truisms about
a couple being
happily in love is that it's much more
fascinating
to the participants than to most observers;
that's
why romance novels end when the couple finally get together!
>all out of some desire to spawn a super-human gym
child?
>Jeez, imagine the psychological pressure.
I doubt
it. I'm sure Nadia remembers
pressures to perform
all too well. Yeah, I'm sure that parents who did
well
in a sport and enjoyed it are pleased if
their child takes it
up (a la the Roethlisbergers), but hopefully that's because
they want the child to share the joy they remember, not
because they want to relive the past through the child,
or force the child into a mold that doesn't fit.
Veering
away from the possible segue to Joan Ryan territory....

Wheaties
I know that the title may seem alittle
weird, but get this:
I purchased a box of Wheaties the other day
and on the back of the package
was a copy of
Sports Illustrated's pick of the top 20 Up and Coming
Sports
Stars. Well, number 10 (no ordering given) was Dominique Dawes.
There was
huge shot of her regrasping
the bar after that gorgeous Hindorff she threw
at Dortmund. There is a little speel
about her, too. It talks about her
failures at
Birmingham. It says that she hadn't really pracicted
the
Yurchenko 1 and 1/2 that much, but had to throw it to win. It
also
talks about her personaly
life (school) and her defering Standford
untilk
After the 1996 Games.
The article does stress that she does train alot
35 hrs per week while she was going to
school. It was, however, nice
to see a
gymnast meantioned, along with the swimmers, track
stars, and Shaque
Check it out for
yourself.
