Bart and Nadi
As most people
probably remember or have read, Bart and Nadia got engaged
on her birthday (Nov. 12) in Amsterdam. They then joined the
IG tour to the
Dortmund Worlds, so those of us on the tour got to see them
interact quite a
bit. What I saw was genuine
affection. They were very sweet and attentive to
each
other, but never went overboard with "public displays of
affection."
Bart's mother was also on the tour, and of course she was
the first person Bart
called after he asked Nadia
to marry him. His mom's first question was "Did she
say
'yes?'" and Bart answered that he'd been so nervous that he couldn't
remember! (Obviously she did!) I think Bart also
accidentally left an
overwhelmingly large tip for
the waiter. I guess he was too nervous and excited
to
do math at the time! It can't be denied that the match makes a good media
story, but I think the romance is real. :)

Re: Bart and Nadia
Chip,
I thought hard before
responding. I don't want to flame-broil you (or
whatever
you said), I also know Bart and Nadia and I refuse to intrude
in
their personal life.
What I want to respond
to, is the comment about "making such a public
spectacle".
The media was so unprepared that in some newspapers the
picture
next to the story was, at least, 4 years old. Now you cannot
blame
public figures for capitalizing on the media if they can, but
Bart and Nadia were
not the ones who made the engagement such a
"public spectacle".

But they've made such a public spectacle out of this
engagement that
I'm just thinking: what's the deal? Is it all out of some desire to
spawn a super-human gym child? Jeez, imagine the psychological
pressure.

Bartova article
Hi gang! I picked this up
earlier today and thought it might be
of
interest.

LONDON, June 30
(Reuter) - Daniela Bartova, too heavy to
continue her international gymnastics career, has found
the
perfect alternative in the new discipline of
women's pole
vaulting.
The 21-year-old Czech from
Ostrava has broken the world
record three times in
the space of five weeks and this Sunday
she seeks
a fourth at a meeting in Gateshead, England.
Bartova's
rapid rise to the top started on May 21 in
Ljubjana,
Slovenia, when she notched her first record of 4.10
metres, improving her outdoor best from last year by
40
centimetres and
deposing Chinese Sun Caiyun as world leader.
She then took the record to
4.12 in Duisburg, Germany, on
June 18, and six days later on a return visit
to Germany added a
further centimetre
on her one and only jump in Wesel.
The compact young Czech may
never have become a record
breaker if she had not
put on too much weight to pursue her
original
career as a gymnast.
After finishing a lowly 64th overall in the 1992 Barcelona
Olympics,
Bartova had to face the uncomfortable truth that
she
was growing out of her first sport.
``The coaches told me I had
become too big and heavy,'' she
said.
Looking for another sport, Bartova initially tried the long
jump.
But then she
was spotted by Prague pole vault coach,
Boleslav
Patera, who persuaded her to try his event. Patera
testifies to the
importance of Bartova's gymnastics background.
``Physically she couldn't
have had better preparation for
the pole vault,''
he said.
Speed on the runway and flexibility in the air make her a
formidable vaulter and she is also
a fearless competitor. ``It's
not half as
dangerous as gymnastics,'' she said.
Bartova
is aiming for 4.50 metres within the next four
years
and hopes to clear 4.25 this season.
Under Patera she regularly jumps that height in training
and has already jumped 4.20 in an exhibition in Prague.
Unfortunately,
it was in the Wenceslas square which because of
its
slope does not meet the requirements for ratification.

Stars.
Just
another example of how little SI really knows about gymnastics. Dom D
was
'up and coming' back in 1991. She
doesn't qualify for that anymore,
surely!

Hi,
I
don't mean to be asking a stupid question, but it does pertain to
gymnastics.
I belong to the Power Rangers mailing list (it's okay, go
ahead & laugh), and
a lingering question
pertains to one of the actors' gymnastic record. It
seems
that Amy Jo Johnson once competed as a gymnast (the Pink Ranger). Is it
possible
to find out any information (record, etc.) on how good/bad she was
from anywhere?
Thanks
Jim J.
