Just as a followup to Susan's earlier letter, Jenni Bethard and
company are NOT training at the new Browns in Houston. They did
perform an exhibition for the opening of the temporary site, but
are still training in the Altamonte Springs, FL gym. This comes
from a VERY reliable source (Jenni B's mom) that I was talking to
last night.

Subject: Introduction

Hey Fellow Gym Fans,

I am new to the group.  My name is Cole and I'm a 33 year old college
administrator in Austin, Texas.  I have been a huge gymnastics enthusiast since
about 1973 when I enrolled in a tumbling class in my hometown.  I competed in
high school but stopped before college, choosing to participate only as a
spectator.  I keep up with the sport by reading publications (IG, for example)
and watching EVERY televised meet.  I am thrilled to find this forum, as I've
never really met other folks that match my level of enthusiasm for the sport.
I have a feeling that's about to change.

I follow both men's and women's gymnastics, but probably enjoy keeping up with
the international women's field a little more.  (In my next life I want to
coach a women's team.)  I have always liked the Romanians, my favorites include
Dobre, Camelia Voinea, Silivas, Mirela Pasca, but follow the US and other
countries as well.   I think we owe a tremendous debt to Olga Korbut who really
started the craze in this country.  I'll never forget seeing her perform in
Munich.  I was a wide eyed kid who discovered something that would be a part of
my life forever.

I look forward to communicating with all of you.  Best wishes.

Cole

Subject: Letter from Omelianchik

I hope it's OK to post this. My friend Kasha has just got a letter
from Oksana Omelianchik and if Oksana doesn't mind here is the
translation (she writes in Russian):

*************************************************************

Dear Katya! Oksana Omelyanchik is writing to you. I am answering
your letter, which I received about a year ago. Things tend to be
exactly like that here.
A little about myself: it's already 5 years since I was
performing and training. Since then, I have been working. I work
in my own school in the gymnastics department. I even worked for a
year in America from '89 to '90. But in this year I was in Belgium
from January to June. But now there arises a linguistic obstacle.
I know English (not perfectly, but in general). But in Belgium, you
have to know French. The trainers more or less spoke English, but
the children didn't. It was interesting, but I really want to work
in an English-speaking country. Because of a back injury, I can't
insure myself or support children. But I choreograph with pleasure,
and this has turned out better for me. I teach dances and choreography,
make up combinations on beam and floor. The results haven't been bad.
Working as a choreographer makes me very happy, but I still miss
competition.
Now I have a growing daughter. She will be 3 years old on
Oct 23rd, she's called "Nastya", her full name is Anastasiya. She
helps me all the time, she's so grown up for her age, it's very
interesting.
My husband was in the army, now he works for the "militsiya"
(this is our police).
I have a brother and a sister, I am ten years older than my
brother and 12 years older than my sister. She does sports acrobatics
as a women's pair, but, this school year, she started in a more
difficult school, which I studied and trained.
That's all about myself. I am sending you a photo and autograph.
I would like to correspond with you further. Please write about yourself.
Goodbye! I'm waiting for your answer!

3. At the 1980 Olympics, a female gymnast attempted a handspring
double-front.  What country was she from?

North Korea

4.  What vault was Tim Daggett doing when he broke his leg at Rotterdam '87?

A couple of questions:

1.  Does anyone know Shannon Miller's status on the world champoinship
team?  Did Nunno decide to let her compete as a part of the team?

2.  What is the format of this competition?  I seem to remember reading
somewhere that 7 athletes participate and each country will be allowed
to choose the top five on each event.  Does this ring a bell?  Will the 1996
Olympics use the same format?

Who do you think will win the women's team title?  I predict :

1.  Romania
2.  Russia
3.  USA

Thanks, in advance!

7 athletes, any 6 compete on each event, and of those 6 scores, the top 5
count toward the team total.  Prelims will be C&O, then there will be an
optional-only new-life final.

Hard to say, but I'll go with Russia first.

So does this mean that the teams will *all* go through a C&O prelim, then
*all* go through an optional-only new-life final?  Or is it just the top
few teams?  What's the point of the prelims then, if they could just do
an optional-only final and probably get close to the same results?

I think it'll be a fight for the gold between Russia and Romania, and
it's hard to say who'll win.  The top few for both countries are just
about as strong; it's the bottom few who will make the difference.
Unlike past years, I don't think the U.S. will be fighting for the gold
(usually it was Soviet Union/CIS-Romania-USA all with the ability to win)
but for a bronze with China.

Only the top few teams (is it 6?) will compete in the final.  The point
of prelims is to determine which teams will make the final.  If they had
only a 6-team final, how would they know which countries to include?  Of
course, some of the countries are obvious (RUS, ROM, USA, CHN in women's),
but what about from there?  ESP, UKR, AUS, FRA -- which two would you
pick to finish the field?  Even if the field were limited to 4, would
you include UKR or CHN?  Anyway, it's just the same as with the last
several individual Worlds.

:)
