Bayern Munchen - Dmitri Karbanenko (RUS)
TG Saar - Sergei Kharkov (RUS)
SC Berlin - Dmitri Nonin (RUS)
TSV Monheim - Katalin Mircan (AUS/ROM)

Subject: Collegiate rankings

Collegiate rankings begin this week.  I have just sent out the men's
rankings.  Tomorrow night, after the women's are released, I'll send
those out.

If you have not yet received the men's rankings, and want to be on the
distribution list, or thought you were on the list, then please send
me a msg ASAP so that I can get the rankings to you.

If you want the women's rankings, and the above holds true for you as
of Wednesday morning, then ditto.

Did that make sense??

Oh yes -- Wendy Hilliard, former US Rhythmic champ, was named
president of the women's sports foundation.

Well here it goes my introduction BRACE yourself it gets interesting! First
of all my name is Sara.  I am 18 and a student at Tarrant County
Junior College in Fort Worth, Texas.  I went to Baylor first semester but my
boyfriend was here so I came to be with him.  I am hoping (so is he) that
we'll be married in a year.  Now for my connection with gymnastics...I was in
gymnastics for 12 years of my life.  I began at GO gymnastics in Houston with
Gizi Oltean.  There I trained with Chelle Stack (at that point she was a
first year elite and I wasn't even competing yet) After 2 years at the age of
11 I followed a group of coaches that bought Gymnastics America.  There I
competed asa Class II and won Regionals that year.  From there I went and
trained a year one on one with Deana Parrish.  That was hard but I must say I
went from class II to Elite and made the Junior B National Team also.
Shortly thereafter I went and trained with Deana's twin sister (Debbie) at
Cypress.  Debbie at that point had 6 girls mainly ones from Gymanstics
America.  Any way that year I competed Junior "A" with such names as Kerri
Strug, Michelle Campi, and Larrissa Fontaine.  In fact later that year
Larrissa and I were on a team (the West) at the 1990 Olympic Festival.  We
were leading until we both fell on floor and ended up 3RD.  The next year I
went Senior Elite and that was the begining of the end.  I broke my foot at
an invitational then I "pulled" some muscles in my back which  nagged all
year long. After a horrible season, for the first time I didn't  Qualify for
USA's, and the toll of my coaches constant negativity I moved to Arizona and
became a Desert Devil ( where interestingly enough I carpooled with Jaycie
Phelps) I went to supercamp and finally, after Stormy's request, went to get
my back checked. Well to make a long story short my back had 3 stress
fractures and scoliosis PLUS 2 other degenerative bone diseases.  I was
forced to retire at 15. I had back surgery at 17 and constantly battle with
the pain. I have alot of insight on negative coaching and the whole
gymnast/coach relationship. I hope to hear from all of you in the near
future.

Subject: Introduction

Hi GYMN-ers,

I subscribed to GYMN about a month ago and have just been quietly
reading everything(yes, another lurker). Here's a little bit about
me...

My name is Jenny and I have loved gymnastics since I saw Olga perform
in the 1972 Olympics. I started taking gymnastics at the YMCA when I
was 12 and I began competing when I was 13. When I was 14 I switched
to a club (has anyone from the Chicago area heard of GYM FORUM?). Gym
Forum closed a year after I started there and my coach(Don Carney)
opened up another gym with a friend(Jim Starke) which was called
Starke's Gym Forum. I competed there until I was 17 and had a bad
ankle injury. One thing led to another after my injury and I never
went back to gymnastics. At the time I never thought I was quitting
the sport permanently-just taking some time off, but I wound up at
colleges that didn't have gymnastics and that was that, or so I
thought.

I have been just a fan ever since, until I discovered about a year and
a half ago that a local club was offering an adult women's class. I
couldn't believe it! I am 31 years old and I am re-learning a lot of
the stuff I used to do when I was a kid as well as some things that I
couldn't do before. It's too fun, and it't great to work out with
other people my age. I am at Badger Gymnastics (along with fellow gymn
subscriber Lani) here in Madison Wisconsin.

That master's meet out in California sounded fun...I'd love it if I
could go there and compete someday, or even better if someone
organized one in the midwest! I have no idea how much is involved to
organize such an event, but I'd be willing to try if I had some
help?...

Well, I've babbled on enough. I'd love to hear from people out there
who aren't kids any more but still like to work out!

A gymnast who is dissapointed or unhappy with her coaching situation has the
right and perhaps a duty to do whatever she feels is in her best interest to
better her training environment.  Trying a different coach and training
environment can either prove to the gymnast that she made the right decision
to move or help her to appreciate the training she had at the old gym even
more.

Gaining this perspective of what it is like at another gym and with another
coach can be of great value to the gymnast.

Sure, but going from Dynamo to Karolyi's back to Dynamo back to Karolyi's
back to Dynamo (or did she start at Karolyi's?) may be a little
excessive, no?  She may have perfectly legit reasons, but those on the
outside can't help but wonder and speculate.

If Jennie is really back at Dynamo, I will be upset.  She looked better in a
ponytail than a Shannon Miller hairdo.

Why does Steve Nunno attempt to make all his gymnast look like
Shannon clones?  Does he think that it will bring them higher
scores?  This is something I have never understood.

Also, when did Shannon straighten her hair and get it all cut off?
I noticed it on the telecast of Worlds and saw a picture in IG a few
months ago.

Subject: Larissa Lukianenko carries on

Larissa Lukianenko, the Belarussian rhythmic gymnast, had said
that she is intending to compete until the 1996 Olympics, by
which time she will be 23 years old! She is quite incredible
keeping her shape despite "old age". Another example that
"old age" is not the be all and end all for gymnasts. (OK,
so rhythmic gymnastics may not be as physically demanding than
artistic, but still...)

I know that people from Gymn have attended many meets this past year.

If you attended one or more meets this year (including local, etc.), please
send me *private e-mail* and let me know which ones, when and where.  I'll
compile it and post a summary.

Also, I would love to get a list of what meets had a Gymn Reporter, and who
served as Gymn Reporter.  Could you send me that Rachele?

Hey gang!

To commemorate the beginning of the NCAA season, thought I'd ask for trivia
submissions for:

*NCAA Individual Achievements*

Although I'm planning a trivia set on teams later in the year, right now,
before team standing begin to show up, I thought it would be nice to discuss
the individuals.

Send me your questions, ASAP!!!!  Private e-mail please!

No, some countries used orchestrated music at the '79 Worlds.  I I remember
reading in _IG_ that the Soviet girls got permission to use orchestrated
music at the '78 Chunichi Cup.

Does anyone know the answer to these questions?

1.  When did it become allowed to have recorded floor dance music
(as opposed to the live pianist)?

2.  When was the piano-only rule relaxed?  (I know it was after
1976 and before 1983, but I don't remember when.)  Was
there any particular push for the change?

3.  Was there a time when women's floor ex did not include music,
and, if so, when did that change?

4.  Have there ever been rules restricting what type of
    instrumental music could be used?

Musically curious,

I believe by 1977, the piano-only rule was already changed.
I remember watching Natalia Shaposhnikova's floor ex.
routine in the World Cup (1977 or 78?) and being
extremely disappointed that her wonderful "La Toreador"
piano arrangement was replaced by an organ (all the
notes sounded "mashed" together, i.e. drawn out).
I also remember that there was a "push" for it (I'll
have to dig out my IG to verify the dates).

Subject: Yale meet

Just saw Yale, MIT, and Brown (of the famous lawsuit).  Yale was easily
the class of the meet and won it in a walk.  Compared to the other teams,
they looked like they belong in Division I.  It was nice to watch
athletes who aren't getting so much as a scholarship for competing, and
although much of the meet was rather painful to watch, to see a
gymnast hit for whom it doesn't come easily can be as exciting as
watching Hope Spivey score her 58th career 10.0.  Speaking of which, the
score inflation at this meet was among the worst I've seen in the NCAA.
When scores are rarely going above 9.0 even with inflation, I guess it
really doesn't matter, since there's plenty of room for the athletes, and
more importantly, the teams, to be differentiated properly.  Next week,
Northeastern.
