Gymnastics pictures available
More pictures are now
available from the ftp site, <ftp.sunet.se> (Path:
/pub/pictures/sports/gymnastics/. . .). It is
also accessable by World Wide
Web
(http://ftp.sunet.se). Mostly of artistic gymnasts, there are a
few RSG
shots available for downloading. The index with details on each
shot,
including photographer credits, have so far
not been uploaded by the sysop.
Please feel free to email me if you have
trouble accessing this archiving or
viewing the
pictures.
I believe there are upwards of one hundred pictures, so please stop
by!

any news on Gurova since

it! She's my all time favourite gymnast, and I've
heard
nothing about her since a post Seoul Soviet tour......
To my
knowledge Yelena Gurova is a typist in Moscow.
and at this moment she is not involved in gymnastics
whatsoever.

the Frank Erwin Center adjacent to the University of Texas
campus on Sept. 8 and
9. The

I called Saturday morning and got

I believe Anne W. has signed a letter of
intent to compete for U. of New
Hampshire next season. (According to that infamous
"list")

Gurova
I know that after Gurova retired from artistic gymnastics she became a
sports acrobat for a while. She was definitely competing in
sports acrobatics
in 1989, because I remember
seeing some small articles and results in Sovetsky
Sport
that year. But I don't know how long she stayed in that sport or why she
quit (age? injury?).

Olympic preview
On Wednesday, July 19, NBC's "Today" show
will have a preview of the Atlanta
Olympics and, from the promos showing
Miller and Dawes, I would guess that
includes
gymnastics. The show airs at 7 am
central.

Chainey Umphrey
I
was channel surfing today and ran across a "Mr. Roger's
Neighborhood"
featuring a 15-year-old Chainey (before the hunky arms) doing p-bars, pommel
horse, high bar, and floor (he said he sometimes performed
floor to music and
had Mr. Rogers put some
on!). Didn't he just recently make
another
appearence on
the show?

For
any of the Aussies interested in this, NBC "Today" is on channel
7
from about 1am to 3am, and a couple of days
later, so watch for this
Thursday or Friday morning.
Michelle
P.S. Thanks to Chantel & Beth for the
Gurova tid-bits. You made my day!

Gurova et al.
It is really odd that someone
brought up Elena Gurova. The other day I
reading through some old IG's (1984 and 1985) and there was
a few articles
in which she was meantioned. One, for example, atlked
about age limits being
inforced
at international competitions. Well, to make a long story short,
it made me realize how many gymnasts who peak early (child
prodigy)
tend to fade off fast. Gurova is an excellent example. At 12, she did what
the current world champ (Yurchenko_
couldn't do. She had it all, and looked
like a
bright star, but turned out to be a shooting one. It is kind of sad,
but others have done the same. I decided to look up some
stats on the
junior europeans,
and it seems that execept for Szabo
(1980 and 1982) and
Boginskya (1986), early success
seems to mean a short career at the top.
It is interesting that many
gymnasts who did not do well at meets at
early
ages, seem to have had longer careers. Case in point, Sushonova
(15th,
I think at the 1984 Euro Juniors, and she had a great career, whereas
Irina
Barakanisova (sp) who was
the 1984 champ, faded fast.
I am sure that there are exceptions, but
it is an interesting point to
examin.

Re: Gurova & 84 DTB
I have met Elena Gurova in 1988, in NYC, after the exhibition in
Meadowlands.
She appeared to be a very sweet girl. I think her coach is Kochetkova's coach.
