news from France
From FFG Bulletin No. 175
--In May a
delegation of top Russians traveled to France. First they
performed
a series of exhibitions, and then at the end clinic with the French
team in which they shared their expertise in teh compulsories.
The women
that made the trip were Oksana Fabrichnova, Dina Kochetkova,
Yelena
Groscheva, Natalia Bobrova,
Yevgeniya Kuznestzova,
Yelena Produnova, Svetlana
Liapina,
and Svetlana Bachtina. For the men came Alexei Voropayev, Alexei
Nemov, Yevgeny Shabaev, Yevgeny Zhukov, Dmitri Karbanenka,
Dmitri Troush,
Yevgeny
Podgorny, Nikolai Krioukov, and Alexei Bondarenka.
The French gymnasts
that trained with the Russia team in Carcassonne,
France, were Sebastian Tayac, Thierry Aymes, Steeve Geria, Eric, Poujade,
Fabrice Guelzec, Frederik Nicolas,
Bernard Pellard, Frederic Lemoine,
Jacky
Loquin, Laetitia Begue, Cecile Canqueteau, Laure Gely, and Daniella Popa
(native of Romania??).
--This
issue also had a preview of last month's European Cup, and their
predictions for the most part came true: According to
Jean-Louis Bourbon,
coach of the French national
team, the Cup would be dominated by the two
Russians, Shabaev
and Nemov.
On the women's
side, the thin field (mere 13) of the previous European
Cup was brought
up. Not only were there problems
with visas and injuries to
those who had
qualified, but apparantly the French team had
boycotted the
event in Brussels! Apparantly there
was some dispute over a certain French
competition
not being included among the Grand Prix circuit. "The beautiful
Russian,"
Svetlana Khorkina, was cited as the favorite based
upon her leading
the qualifying with 52.2 points
(.3 over Kochetkova).
--There is a new
rising star in rhythmic gymnastics to look out for.
Svetlana Lipkoskaya
of Russia was discovered and is now coached by Olga
Bouinova, coach of the late Oksana Kostina.
She is described as having an
incredible tempermant and impeccable tehcnique,
and works her body perfectly.
Apparantly in her routine she has a series that involves
six full rotations
in attitude! That's a sextuple turn. She is also strong in her
composition
and artistry and should be one to look
out for in the future.

Strug's move
Actually, I'm not suprised by the move at all.
It makes sense for
her to spend a year in a more
intense training situation and CO Ariels
seems like a nice, postitive
environment for her. What I'm wondering is
if they
broke their "no-boarders" rule with her, or has her mother moved
up there with her?
I'll
check on AZStarNet and see if the local papers have
anything
to say about it...

Okino picture
In the July 24 issue of
"People" magazine, there is a really cool, close-up
picture of Betty Okino (age 15)
doing a release move on the bars.
Unfortunately, it is included in an
article and interview of Joan Ryan.
However, I thought fellow Okino fans would be interested!

Shushunova (was Gurova et

I still think that there is alot MORE
pressure on the athlete who
at 12 is out doing the
world's best. Gurova was just an example.
Perhaps
Shushunova was not the best example, too, but in my
book,
she peaked in 1986, and then went down hill
fast. Here apparent
success early, then her lack
of sucess at the european
juniors in
1984 perhaps saved her from burning out fast.
Many american examples abound,
too.

Re: Strug
Hi all,
Jeffrey
asked:
>How old is she? She's been around with Miller since 1991.
Is she 17 now and
>taking a year off (like
Dawes and Borden) for the Olympics?
Kerri was born November 19, 1977,
so she's heading for 18. She was the
second-youngest
gymnast in Barcelona - Spain's Sonia Fraguas beat her
by a
day (November 20, 1977).
And who's
to say it wasn't the 20th in Spain when it was the 19th in
Arizona? Serious
trivia buffs, have at it.
As for questions about Gurova:
I pulled her, and no birthday. Haven't had a
chance
to dig through the more random files we have at IG to see if it's
around. One day, one day . . .

PR Cup
Results from the Puerto Rico Cup (July 12-15). I wasn't there this year.
The one thing I really would've liked to
see was women's vault finals, as
Yevdokimova and Lopez are the only two gymnasts I know of
who compete layout
handspring fronts. Both were there last year, but I missed
Lopez's during
AA, and then she scratched finals, so I've never seen her do
it. I'm told
she
uses a different technique than Yevdokimova, hollow
instead of arched.
Would've
been interesting to compare.

I agree. I remember once, during the 1988 Olympic
games, when Bart Conner said
"Let's just sit back and watch" when
Daniela Silivas began her floor exercise.
AND
THEY DID!! The commmentators
didn't say a word during her routine.
It was
great!

"Today" show
Anyone else watch the "Today" show's
Atlanta preview? There was a
profile on
the Kim Zmeskal/Dominique
Moceanu training situation, complete with
interviews with Kim, Dominique and Bela,
as well as lots of footage of the
girls working on
compulsories. Of course, Braynt Gumbel had to open
the
segment with, "It's arguable whether it's
a real sport or an athletic
exhibition."
Kim
says she thinks about the fall in Barcelona a lot and admitted she felt
the pressure, but when asked if there was too much pressure,
she defended the
sport, saying there is pressure
in everything--it is what makes sports so
special. She sees herself as the underdag, but doesn't mind because she's
doing the sport for herself and realizes she has to rely on
her maturity
rather than doing all of the tricks
the younger kids do.
About Dominique, Bela said
she gets better everyday. She says
she wants to
be a combination of Mary Lou (jumpy)
and Nadia (perfectionist).
After the profile, Bryant asked the reporter if
it was right to put a
13-year-old in this kind of position and the reporter
said she thought so
before, but meeting Kim and Dominiqe changed her mind. Bryant, ever
negative,
ended the segment by referring to the age change after 1996 as "a
step in the right direction."

"Today" Show
Hi everybody!
I'm very glad to be back
on the list again! Anne Marie did a
great job of
summarizing the "Today"
Show gymnastics segment, but I just wanted to add how
impressed
I was with Kim. She has really
matured and seems to have a great
attitude about
the sport and life in general.
Hopefully, her healthy
perspective will
help to give the sport a more positive image. I find this
really
ironic since it was really Kim's "downfall" at Barcelona that
started
a lot of the negative press to begin
with! It would really help if the
media
actually listened to what the GYMNASTS say
rather than forming their own
perceptions!!
Just my two cents.

Depending on where you are
located, you may have a Rhythmic Gymnastic program
near
you. Since a required element in Rhythmics is over-split leaps,
Rhythmics
coaches have some pretty systematic training techniques to get the
required flexibility developed. You might see if a rhythmics
coach will
share her ideas with you.//good
