Help
I am really sorry to post this to everyone, but Patrick-you left
one of
your camera cases & lenses in my car
after the US/UKR meet. I don't
have you e-mail address, so that is why this is on gymn.

Re: Scores
I've also seen zero scores before, a Romanian (I think it
was Mirela
Pasca)
competed in the Scottish Centenary Cup and she was vaulting
but couldn't get her run-up right and ran straight past the
vault three
times, thus scoring zero on that
piece. She did OK on the other pieces
though, so
it's not like that was intentional or anything.
I'm sure there are
many zeros where gymnasts were carrying injuries and
didn't
want to risk it. Did Miller score zeros in the American Cup'94
when she only did vault and just touched the other three
apparatus...

Budget Invite - Men's Press Conference pt 1
In
attendance: Igor Korobchinski. John Roethlesberger
shows up toward
end of Igor's questioning. I'll post John's seperately.
Igor
speaks very good English, and answered the questions directly
for the most part.
A few times he relied on an interpreter (aka Beth.)
Q: I'd
like to ask Igor to assess his performance today overall.
IK: Good, I
can do all my routines, but I have mistakes, I think a few.
Q: And how
are you newly motivated for 1995?
IK: Because I like this, I like
gymnastics, and I want to be in Atlanta
And I compete before Atlanta
because I need more competition.
For me
it's very important.
Gymn: Do you
feel more pressure now that '96 is approaching? With
these
meets do you think about them as they are and not worry so much
about the Olympics coming up?
(interpreter)
IK:
Every athlete gets nervous, of course.
And whoever does not make
mistakes and has
a good program, that's the one that's going to win.
Right now there are a
lot of gymnasts performing at a high level. So
it's
very difficult to say who is going to win.
Q: The Ukraine is ranked
third in the world right now. What
will it
take to maintain third place and move up
in Sabae?
IK: I hope in Sabae
was good, no *be* good (everyone laughs - tenses
are
*hard* when you're speaking a foreign lanquage!) And
I hope will
have a medal, team. I don't know what kind, gold or silver
or bronze.
But now Russian team I think is best. China also. But Japan has
chance.
Q:
You didn't go to European Cup and you were second in last years.
Two of
your other teammates got to go instead.
How do you feel about
that? Is that okay with you?
IK:
Because I have so many competitions.
And, what about me? I
don't
like it, I don't like European. It's not real not so many gymnasts.
It's not the same Europe
championships or World championships.
(pause)
IK:
Okay? Okay, I go. (Laughter)

interview
I just read an interview with Joan Ryan in
"Glamour" about her now infamous
book,
and she said she wanted the government to apply child-labor laws to the
sport. I was
wondering if she was doing anything to make this a reality or
if it is just talk.

P.S. One incredibly stupid quote from the
interview: "If you're little,
walking the
balance beam is like walking on a highway; if you're big, it's
like a toothpick."
