ball.

Cuba's Yordania Corrales held the No. 1 spot.

I was a little disappointed, too.  I was really looking forward to seeing
Nadia's teammates from 1976.  Their reunion was barely featured and none of
the women were identified.  Anyone know if Teodora Ungureanu was present?

BTW...I once read somewhere (maybe Bela's book??) that he and Marta originally
thought that Teodora would be the star, not Nadia.  They were both exceptional
gymnasts in their prime.

Subject: Mogilny/French Intl.

The weekend edition of l'Equipe has a preview of the French Intl. and a
story about Mogilny.  Some of the gymnasts competing will be (actually,
that should be "were" since the meet was held over the weekend) Belenky,
Misutin, Korobchinsky, Voropaev, Ivankov, Khorkina, Kochetkova,
Podkopayeva, and Begue.  Thirty-seven countries are participating, and
this meet is a qualifier for the European Cup.

As for Mogilny, the article states that he will return to competition at
this meet.  Some interesting dirt is that Mogilny was "hated by national
team coach Leonid Arkaev" and that UKR refused to let him compete for
them because he trained in France.  About his comeback, Mogilny said,
"It's true that I'm taking a big gamble, but I want to prove that I'm
still one of the best on PH."

Subject: Apparatus ?'s

I would appreciate some help:  I am giving a speech on Kim Zmeskal and would
like to include a brief description of the 4 women's apparatuses.  Just a
brief description of each, please.  All I really want are the measurements
(including how long the vault run-way is) and basic material.
Please send me private e-mail at B10j@aol.com.  Thanks!

Subject: Gymnastics coverage on TV this past weekend

Wide World featuring Nadia does Romania:

This was the first time I'd seen directly comparable footage of the
1976 and 1980 Nadia in close enough proximity to really appreciate
how much better she was as an "old lady."  Too bad the US television
audience never got to see her compete at the Moscow games.

Two annoying items:  I had primed my roommate to check out her
Comaneci dismount off bars, and they cut away from it; to make
matters worse, they muted the music for the end of her floor ex (grr...).
And they were convinced for some reason that "Nadia's Theme"
was from a movie soundtrack; it was (and for all I know, still
is) the theme for the soap opera "The Young and the Restless."
Interesting that they chose not to show the famous Time
Nadia cover during the Montreal games--"She's perfect, but
the Olympics aren't."  (Nadia was pictured on the beam.)

The Mixed Pairs:

While two of the gymnasts were waiting for their scores,
it was amusing to hear the announcement in the background for
the rhythmic demo, and then see the two gymnasts lean forward
and turn to watch the demo, while the commentators nattered
on obliviously.

Is anyone besides me from the D.C. area and old enough to
remember Mohini, the first white Bengal tiger (tigress, actually)
to be in a U.S. zoo?  Most, if not all, white tigers in
U.S. zoos are her descendants (her usual consort was
a handsome [orange] Bengal named Rajah).  I thought it
was most appropriate that her namesake's leotard was
black and white :-).  Actually, because they are strong,
graceful, and lithe (and even incredibly skinny--the flounders
of the big cats), tigers fit closely to most images of
gymnastics, even the not-so-useful bodyweight image.

The gymnastics, unfortunately, was not all that wonderful.
Looked like almost everyone was struggling with jet lag,
tiredness, nerves, or some other lack of concentration.
Sharipov was great on PB and HB, though.  Odd to see
a meet in which competitors do better on beam or
pommel horse than they do on floor ex.

Subject: Sports Illustrated article

Finally, I can post again.  My email address has gone through some changes
(unknown to me!)....anyway, I tried sending this last week, but here it is
again...

I finally read the article from Sport Illustrated last night.  From what I've
read here on gymn, there had been differing opinions about the article, so I
was curious.  I think the journalist who wrote the article (I didn't catch
his/her name) couldn't decide what the point was that he was trying to make!
I've never read an article that was so confused.  The first part was about how
Miller has gotten old, and will have trouble keeping up with the younger
gymnasts.  Then, the article says 'don't give up on her yet' .  It sounded to
me like the journalist ALREADY had given up on her, and was trying to convince
himself otherwise.

In addition, it compared the 'older' gymnast Miller(18), to the 'younger'
gymnasts, one of which was Borden(17) (?????)

***reminds me of the 'geriatric' comment from the Globe that was mentioned***

It was really a strange article....especially when it pointed out that
Borden was a virtual unknown.  Huh?

It was also a HORRIBLE picture of Miller.

Just my dime.

Subject: Nadia on ABC

Hello all gymners

Did anyone else see Nadia on television Saturday night?  I think that
ABC did a wonderful job, despite a few mistakes.  That program really touched my
heart.  I didn't believe my eyes, did Nadia really just do a simple layout for
one of her floor passes?  I know that gymnastics has gotten more difficult over
the years, but that seemed much too simple!  Watching the program reminded me of
a movie I had seen in the late 80's about Bela finding Nadia and coaching her to
become a champion.  Does anyone else remeber watching it?  I would really love
to see the movie again, please tell me if you know how I could see it again.  I
am really glad I got to see Nadia and the mixed pairs competition on tv
Saturday.

I am attempting to pick a photo of Debbie's to decorate the Gymn home
page.  We've narrowed it down three times already -- now there's only
four left.  Check out the four remaining ones and let me know which
one you like the best.  The URL is
