Canqueteau
Yesterday's (June 20) issue of l'Equipe had a little article on Cecile
Canqueteau:
"Cecile Canqueteau
Hides Her Amusement"
Her outer appearance is one of grace and
romanticism, but this young
French girl who was brilliant at the European
Cup this weekend, is in
fact a very strong young
lady.
"Blond like wheat, eyes as blue as the ocean, an ideal
figure." This
is how the French Gym. Federation described her when the
press asked
for information about Canqueteau.
She's a happy young girl, almost 16,
who is
very elegant and is a regular member of the French team. In
fact,
the French team really profits from her presence. She already
has
exemplary results: 10th AA at the
European Cup, and a finalist on
B and FX; 9th AA, 7th V and 4th with the
team at the '94 European Champs.;
French junior AA champion in 1993. And all this in spite of a slender
and thin body (1.52m and 41 kg.) "Cece"
gives the impression of being
fragile and nonchalant. But she's neither.
Sometimes
she feels the stress of competing.
"When a meet is very
important, I'm
very nervous," said Cecile.
"I try not to show it and
I succeed rather easily, but deep
inside I panic..."
In Rome, after becoming the best French girl
in the AA, Canqueteau was
admired
for her grace in the FX in event finals.
She used music from a
well-known film,
"Basic Instinct."
Languorous choreography with high
voltage
movements produced a score of 9.725.
Other gymnasts were able to
improve upon
this score, because Canqueteau lacks a
"name" with the
international
judges. Also, it was the first time
that she had
performed this routine outside of
France.
"Today I thank my sister who got me interested in
gymnastics and
who encouraged me to keep at
it," said Cecile. "After
a few more
test meets in Marseille, I'll be able
to rest for a while..."

USA video mag
Hi everyone!
Has anyone else gotten the USA
Gymnastics Video Magazine? Mine
arrived
today, and it is great! The production quality was a liitle poor in a couple
of
spots, but all in all, everything looked good. For me it was nice to see
highlights from competitions not on TV, since I have never
and probably will
never get to see a live
meet. There was a profile on Amy
Chow done in
fairy-tale stlye,
with tons of cute footage of her when she was young. They
even
used some of her piano music for background. I'm glad the USGF has
improved their video quality--a couple of years ago I
ordered 6 tapes from
them of big competitions, and
4 of them are horrible.
