Earlier this year I wrote to about 12 gymnasts. Out of those Shannon Miller,
Elodie Lussac, Amanda Borden, Nadia Comaneci, and Dominique Dawes wrote me
back! The rest of the gymnasts I wrote to were from out of the US. I think
that there is a better chance of getting a response if you know how to speak
there languae. I am really hoping for a response from Lilia Podkopayeva but
nothing yet!

Marianna Webster and Jennie Thompson were both pulled from the Olympic
Festival.  No explanation given, according to the AP.

Subject: used equipment

Today I ran into Jing Hua Liang (Jing Wei's bother of Stanford team) member
of the Chinese National Team, etc.  Any rate he is starting a new gym in the
Baltimore Maryland area and is looking for equipment (at a good price), he
is taking anything that is old and no longer being used to just get things
started.  Presently he is more in need of women's equipment than men's,
although mats, belts, and other odds and ends are welcome.

Please feel free to contact him at (410) 750-9222 if you have any equipment
or any suggestions of contacts.

thanks
Mayland

After the '94 Commonwealth Games, it said in International Gymnast
magazine, that Stella Umeh is now competing for a UCLA team. Is this
true? If so has she been in any comps lately? If you know some of her
     results please let me know.
          Well thats all for now-

I have sent fan mail to a few gymnasts and Shannon Miller sent a printed fact
sheet on a postcard which was signed on the front.
I really think it's great when these gymnasts write back. Considering how much
 else they do.

Dear Gymners,

Wendy Bruce did retire, but is still training for exhibitions.  Her last one
was one of those mall tours.  She still looks great and still keeps up her
difficulty on the events!

As far as I know, Roza had been living and training in Moscow for quite a
while before she decided to retire. She and Chusovitina had been part of that
TESS group back in 1993 and after that fell apart, they somehow worked out
arrangements to keep training in Moscow - Dynamo, I believe - since training
conditions are far better there than in Uzbekistan! At this year's Reese's Cup
I asked Chusovitina about Roza, and Oksana said Roza just couldn't handle the
workload anymore. It's a shame, since I think Roza still could have
accomplished a lot, especially since she and Oksana are about the only two
gymnasts Uzbekistan has! Oksana said she trains mainly at Moscow Dynamo, and as
of February, Roza was still there, but only working out lightly. Maybe she'll
change her mind about retiring.

Subject: GER Champs.

Yvonne Pioch, 15 years old from SC Berlin, is the new German champion with
76.25 points.  Kathleen Stark, age 20, was 2nd (75.700), and Rufa Kreibich
was 3rd (74.925).  Other finishers included Kathrin Kuhnert (4th with
73.775), Nadia Ziehfreund (5th with 73.100), Steffi Pimperl (10th with
69.95), and Gabi Weller (12th with 69.85).  The first 3 girls are all 15.
The national champs. are also acting as the 1st qualification meet for the
Worlds.  The 2nd qualification meet will be held at the end of August.

There is a small problem, however.  Even though the FIG allows 15-year-olds
to compete internationally, the DTB's regulations state that a female
gymnast must be 16.  So, Pioch and the 3 other 15-year-olds could be left
off the team for Sabae.  The matter will be taken to arbitration soon.

Hello Gymners!

My name is Katie.  I have been "lurking" on gymn for almost half a year
because I had a "read-only" account.  I have been ecstatic about
gymn since I first saw it and it was an agonizing wait until I could
join in the discussions.

I was a competitive gymnast for 13 years and I still do gymnastics.
I would loved to have been able to respond to the recent discussions
about older gymnasts.  To my dismay, bars are now practically
impossible for me, but I have regained some of my tumbling,
maintained my vaulting and even learned some new skills.  In fact, I
just recently taught myself a full-twisting front layout.  I was
thrilled, but it should probably prove that the skilll should never
have been rated as a 'D' element!

I have read all of gymn's back issues and I want to thank all of you
who make this forum possible.  I thougt I was the only crazed
gymnastics fan out there who tapes and re-watches every competition,
subscribes to two gym magazines and scours everywhere for meet results.
So if I am a little bit obsessive about the sport, I am glad to be in good
company.  I look forward to interacting more often!

Katie

I will agree she did falter a little, but there were other, more seri=

Hey Gymn --

I was supposed to go to the US Classic this weekend but I wasn't able
to go at the last minute (ie on Friday).  All I have heard is that
after Friday's compulsories, Miller was in 1st place, Borden and
Phelps were 2 and 3 (but I don't know who was 2nd, who was 3rd), and
Dawes was 4th.  Miller was not going to compete optionals on Saturday.

I am going to see if I can track down the scoresheet for the Classic
and when I do, I'll send the breakdown to Gymn (unless some other
typing-deprived soul happens to have the scoresheet and feel like
typing in the scores.  grin)

Dear Gymners,

Does anyone have the phone number to the PRIME network, so I can call and
find out the EXACT times of the gymnastics broadcasts from the Olympic
Festival?

Also, some were saying that CBS was going to show the Festival on Satuday
and Sunday(29th and 30th).  According to my TV Guide, they aren't showing
anything!  I live in Orlando, Florida.  Can anyone help?

I've gotten a response from about ever junior or senior national team member
since 1993. Out of all those gymnasts, only 2 have not written back, and
about 5 have been consistantly writing back. All that have written back have
sent pictures, and most handwrite their letters.

I don't know how many of you this will help, but SportsChannel Chicago will
have the Olympic Festival on all this week (they sometimes air Prime
coverage).  Gymnastics is on the schedule for tonight at 10:30 pm central.  I
don't know what this includes, though.

I just got my New Moon magazine( Magazine about girls and there dreams) which
my darling grandmother subscribed me to.

In it there is an interview of Cathy Rigby (or Kathy as they call her).
It basicly talks about her eating disorder, her life in gymnastics, and such.
It doesn't really slam gymnastics, on the contrary, Rigby stresses that it's
a wonderful sport, but maybe in need of changes.

                                  Hoped that helped.

Subject: Olympic Festival coverage on CBS next weekend!!! :)

I just got done watching the Festival coverage today, and CBS
*did* say that they'll be covering three sports next weekend:more
skating, gold medal-round boxing, and gymnastics. They said that they
will cover both men and women's gymnastics, and both AA and team finals.
(Though I believe that's usually the same event....)
The time they announced was 1pm EDT next Saturday - dunno how
that translates for the rest of us. Here in AZ that can be anywhere from
10am on... it seems to be up to the discretion of affiliates what time to
air daytime network shows west of the Mississippi...
It was listed in my programing guide this week as "CBS Sports
Show" with no further explanation. And the Seles/Navratilova will be a
seperate telecast.
btw, for any skating fans out there, the short programs I saw
were surprisingly good! Do check out some of these youngsters!
        Back to lurking...;)

I am a new subscriber of GYMN-L and have had an interesting few days watching
the mail.  I am the owner of a gymnastics supply company operating out of
Connecticut with contacts throught the country for most products you could
need in any gym.  I am willing to answer any questions concerning equipment
to the best of my ability and within my liability and requests for
information will be promptly followed up.   I am also a former collegiate
gymnast with a strong intrest in helping our country's men's collegiate
programs survive.  We all need to show our support of these programs or our
mens program will suffer tremendously.  I already hear young talented boys
talk about leaving the sport because there will be no college program for
them to compete for.   I hope I have not over stepped the bounds of
netiquette on GYMN.
