More Mary Lou
There's a little bit about Mary Lou Retton
in the newest edition of Sassy
magazine. Along with a picture of her, she
describes her perfect day as the
day she won the
Olympics AND the day she got married, also saying she knew
the day her baby was born would overtake both. If the Mary Lou info isn't
enough to make you buy the mag, the update on the hottest
looks in summer
shoes certainly is!

Life after Gymnastics
>The plain fact is this: if you have the

regional, national, or international level, AND you have a college

of
>fields. This is the message we should

Well stated, David. I couldn't agree more. I would like to stress that
gymnastics should be encouraged at all levels and all
ages. Not
everybody
can be the star competitor, but anybody can realize the
mental
and physical rewards that gymnastics can provide. In turn,
this
will help one to excell in the career of their
choice. Of course,
this applies to both men and women.
The bottom line
is that deciding to pursue gymnastics to any
particular
level does not limit one's ability to be successful
in
any chosen career.

Gymnaestrada
Hi Gymners,
Unfortunately I'll not go to Gymnaestrada. I Can't. I'll have
nacional events in sports acrobatics in that time. Its more important to
my coach
win the nacional events in sports acrobatics then go
to
demonstration events. Its
more important to my club also.
As a matter of fact I win once again the Nacional championships in
Mixed Pairs last week.I'll keep working to
international championships
next year.
Some classes of Ginasio
Clube Portugues, my current
club,will go to
Gymnaestrada. If you need any information about Portugal
participation
I'll send soon.
Regards from Portugal

introduction Hi everyone,My
name is Anne and I am 19 years old.I am a
student at Oxford
Brookes University
in the United Kingdom studying geological sciences. The
university does not have a gymnastics club and at the moment
i am trying to
find a
veterans club that i can join.I
have never had proper coaching but
considering
this i am pretty good at gymnastics.I
helped coach a gymnastics
team at school and have
helped out at a local club in Oxford in my spare time.
I think GYMN is a
really good idea because in Britain we do not get very
much
coverage on tv so it will be interesting to find out
scores from the USA
as well as information about
gymnasts past present and future.
If anyone wants any
information about British gymnasts then let me know

There
are colleges and collegiate coaches out there who do take the
scholar-athlete approach very seriously. William and Mary,
the 1994 and 95
USA Gymnastics collegiate champion in men's gymnastics is a
case in point.
Over 20% of their men graduates
since 1973 have gone on to medical school.
In the last 22 years, 96% of
their gymnasts have graduated from college
with
the vast majority going on to have very successful careers and family
lives. More coaches at all levels need to incorporate a
philosophy based on
the long term benefits of
gymnastics and education into their programs.
There is much more to
gymnastics than just placing first.

Many,
many times I have been able to use analogies with my 10-year-old
about school vs. gymnastics. When that math problem doesn't come
out
right, I ask how many kips did she attempt
before she made the
first one and does she make
every one even now? Gymnastics is
in part
responsible for the A/B report cards she
gets.

Svetlana Todorova says she
is unsure if she will go to Sabae (if you
saw her compulsories in Dortmund you wont have to wonder
why)..
although she says she will go to the Universiade in Japan.
I also sent her a PJ Harvey
cassette so if you get really scared
by her next
FX routine music you know who to thank..

Canadian Nationals, May 23
Hi gang,
I will be receiving
Nationals results daily, but will post them the next
day. The fax comes late at night with the
results of that day, I don't
see it until I get to
work the next morning, and thus don't have a chance
to
post until I get home from work. (I
know, I know, I could come home
for lunch, but...)
Here
are results from Tuesday, May 23rd.
