Re: Elodie Lussac
The
latest issue of "Le Gymnaste" does not
specifically say the injury
sustained by Lussac nor its seriousness, but only that she is
"dividing her
time between her studies and
physical therapy that will let her regain her
physical
preparation before remounting the apparatus. She also walks daily
on the grass at the stadium and in the hills near her
home. Elodie
wants to
regain the joy that she always had in
doing gymnastics. Her rich
character
and determination will help her in this
new challenge, in any case we wish
her
luck."

Svetlana Khorkina profile
From the FFG
Bulletin, May 1995
SVETLANA KHORKINA by Celine Nony
Some dare to compare
her to Svetlana Boginskaya. Enough of that! Only
because
she is tall, very tall in fact for a gymnast, at 1.63 meters (approx
5'4"). And only because she
has long lines, and is elegant and expressive.
And only because her names is. . . Svetlana.
Khorkina
is the new star who is shining so brightly on the
world of
artistic gymnastics. We just saw her at the French
International at Bercy,
where
she. . . claimed all but bars and beam.
We also witnessed her on the
world and
Europeans podiums of last year: runner-up at the Europeans in
Stokholm and
second on vault and bars in Brisbane. We discovered her in 1993
when she shone at the Trophee Massilia (in Marseille), the same year she
became the first ever Russian National Champion.
According to Yves Kieffer, Svetlana Khorkina
represents all that is good
in gymnastics. Adorned with unusual height, pure and
precise technique, and
enormous character.
"Svetlana is
forced to adjust her routines," she explains. "You could
never
expect her to do a double layout; her body type does not permit that.
That is why she works so many twisting
skills."
This French coach knows what she is talking about. She has the same
"problem" with her protegee,
Isabelle Serevino [94 Jr
Euro Bars Champ]. . .
"Svetlana, like Isabelle, plays her
size down like a Trump [VERY loose
translation
here-AT]," continues Kieffer. ". .
.[She] finds new and original
combinations. .
. On beam for example, Svetlana
uses the gainer technique in
three different
elements, up to the dismount [by the way, she's recently been
doing a gainer layout-full!-AT]."
If she approaches
perfection, Svetlana Khorkina has had some
difficulty
imposing her style. Without such a fierce and unwavering
will, she never
would have arrived at the top of
the world. In
artistic gymnastics that is.
"When I was four
or five, I decided I wanted to do gymnastics after
watching
my compatriots, like Oksana Omeliantchik," she
recalls. "So my mom
took me to a gym in Belgorod, my home town. But there everyone tried to
persuade me to do rhythmic gymnastics, because of my body
type, and my
delicate wrists and
ankles." Only a little
contrary, the small Svetlana
tried this
sport. "After the first
lesson, I was not very happy with myself.
After all, I lacked the back flexibilty. So,
I immediately stopped and and
started
doing the gymnastics that I liked."
Her meeting up with Boris Pilkin was thus determining. He sensed the
potential
hiding within Svetlana. He created
a special physical preparation
for her, adapted
around the body type of his student.
"He must be a
magician," Svetlana
jokes today. "After all, I
never resented or argued
about all the exercises
he had me do. On the contrary, it
was like a game.
And right
after that, I grew less quickly."
With him, Svetlana is
not content to to progress in only her dear
sport
of gymnastics. She plays a bit in all sports. "Boris is capable of coaching
twenty different sports," she exclaims, extremely proud
of mentor. "So, I
benefit from that.
I swim, and I love playing tennis."
. .
.Sometimes, though, coach and athlete disagree. "Sometimes, he
makes remarks about my outfits, or how I like to go out with
my friends. But
I appreciate
his input on gymnastics, at I am obliged to follow it.
. . "
And she bursts out laughing, "He has
such bad taste though!"
. .
.It must be said that she has no plans of retirement. Sixteen years
old,
she trains from 7 am to 7:30 at night, in three successive training
sessions at 7:30 AM, 10:45 AM, and 5 PM. "I train those hours all the
days
that God made," she says wisely.
But these moments of
calm wisdom do not always correspond to the
temperment of this young girl.
"There are
moments where I could scream, where I let myself run wild
with my friends. gymnasts and
non-gymnasts alike," she tells.
"But
sometimes, I am as sweet as a
lamb, gentle and well-behaved. Or
then, there
times when I stay indifferent to
everything around me."
Finally, there are
only two things that keep her in line.
Her little
eleven year-old sister, whom she
adores. "She is pretty and
also does
gymnastics," the older of the two
says in ecstasy. "Sometimes, I
coach her a
bit. She always listens to my advice and
tries hard to make progress. I
think she has a lot of talent."
With the love that she
has for her sister, there is also the dream of
competing
and winning gold in the Olympic Games, "like Vitaly
Scherba. . . "
Khorkina
is like a flower ready to bloom. . .

junior ?'s
2
questions reguarding the junior ranks:
1) After 1996,
how old will a girl have to be to compete as a junior? It's
currently
what, 11?
2)
Has any (American) girl ever won 2 junior all-around titles?
Thanks
for any help!

old folks in gymn
In
regards to the recent talk on "adults"
taking/competing
in gymnastics, I just want to
say that Madison has
had an adult class for
almost 2 years now (the
class has actually
grown in number). And today, Jenny (almost 32
years old), a fellow gymner,
competed at the
Badger State Games. There were other male
adult gymnasts competing, but the next oldest
female gymnasts were aged 16 and 17! She did
level
6 all-around and scored a very respectable
32.7 (she would've gotten
higher, had she not
"messed up" her beam
routine, but her nerves were
working over time
since the last time she
competed was 15 years ago). Congrats to Jenny
and
all the other adults who competed!
Lani.

Sorry
Date sent:

Sorry to have to ask for the info, but I had
very limited net access.
Finally got my 1-800 number to work, so now I
should be able to do pretty
much what I want. BTW,
this is Jenny from Oshkosh again, and it's good
to
be back.
I also want to point something out that I noticed on a tape a
few
weeks back. I was watching my tape of the
NCAA's from this year, for the
women, and I
noticed something while watching Danielle McAdams on the
balance
beam. When she fell on her double tuck dismount, I saw a Georgia
in the stands, cheering. I just wanted to point out, despite
the rivalry
that goes on between the two schools,
they really could be a bit more civil
towards each
other. I managed to find a kid who goes to Georgia on the
net this year, and he told me that the atmosphere when
Georgia went to
Alabama was terrible. And vice versa. I got to see the Gerogia vs Alabama
(at Georgia) and the conditions were shitty.
Make
what you will of it, but when rivalries start transferrring
to
lousy behavior in all aspects, it's gone way
too far.

OKIE! I am the
person with the 1984 Olympic tapes...sorta.
Our
school has several tapes in the video collection. They
have
all-around, event finals, and some team competition for
the
women, and most of the men's competition. I don't know if
I can get hold of
them for copies, or how to get them to anyone, but
I will find out when I
get back to school in September.
Also...could someone PLEASE repost
the list of NCAA recruits?
Comp[lete list? I need to check some stuff out.
And...finally, Rachel! Could you
possibly put the NCAA ranking
for this year back
on the GYMN WWW server for a few weeks? I
need to
check something for my records.

Re: Sorry
Georgia and Alabama fans don't have the corner market on
"uncivil" behavior
at gymnastics
meets!
NCAA Womens championships, 1995, UTAH
fans laugh when Julie Ballard of
Georgia falls from the BEAM!
The
more popular gymnastics becomes the more the fans will start to act like
football fans! In fact, these probably were football
fans. But you will
notice that it was not the parents of the gymnasts that were
behaving in an
"uncivil" manner. We
parents all hang out together and wish all the kids
luck.
But
please remember that its just not Georgia and Alabama, its all the
schools.
Georgia's team mother,
Lori

Budget Rent-a-Car
The one thing I was really happy about reguarding NBC's coverage of the U.S.
vs. Ukranian meet today was that Elfi S. was there comenting with
Tim
Daggett. I have gotten
really upset in the past when Tim helped cover both,
but
Elfi was only there for the women. Finally, equality!!!
