You must mean it was the first time she competed it. Otherwise, Sherwin,
wher'ya been? This dismount is nearly common now. I've seen it done in '95
by Doni Thompson, Mohini Badjwardj, some NCAA girl (USA), and Eileen Diaz,
who's been doing it for awhile (Puerto Rico). Yelena Lebedeva (Russia)
competed it at the 94 team Worlds. Before that, Gutsu was doing it in 91 &
92.

One for the books though: One of Saadi's girls, Marina Goryunova, did it in
'87! (When a full-twisting double tuck was phenomanal!!!)

I've been indexing all my IG's (it's the librarian in me!) and I was
wondering whatever happened to Olesya Dudnik. Obviously she's
retried now, but she was one of my favourites from a few years back
and I've always thought it was a pity that she only seemed to have
competed internationally for one year.

Does anyone know what happened? Did she grow too tall? Get injured?
Put on too much weight?

Another gymnast that falls into this category is Alla Priakhina.
Second in the 87 Europeans, then what?????? I don't even think she
was on the Soviet team for the Worlds, but she was in the exhibition
tour the Soviets did in Australia just after.

Anyone know what happened to Dudnik and Priakhina????

Aleftina was the alternate at the '87 Worlds in Rotterdam. I also do
think she was on the Russian displays just after worlds '87.
Maybe I can find out some more about these gymnast after the
summer holiday when one of their former teammates comes back
from holiday.

Is she going back and forth between gyms? She really needs to stick with
one if she wants to improve her chances of making the olympic
team..meaning if she is too stressed about her gym situation, what will

If I remember correctly, Beth Wymer from U of Mich. is the NCAA girl..I
saw her at nationals, and I thought that is what she threw, but it was so
last minute, not many clarified it..
But she is (i believe) the only current NCAA gymn.to compete it..I could be
wrong about that...

SELF INTRODUCTION.

Hello GYMNers,

My name is John and I live in Lincoln in the U.K ( age 45 ). I am
married with two teenage children, a son and a daughter who have both been
gymnasts in past. I am an engineering manager at a major UK Semiconductor
Company, but in my spare time can be seen in the gym at Lincoln Gymnastics
Club coaching both men's and women's artistic gymastics. I have a BAGA
Class 4 coaching qualification in both disciplines, and have been coaching
with the Club now for 6 years. In my teenage years ( in the days of wooden
springboards and cocoa matting ) I used to compete at County Level, however
due to my height ( 6' 2" ) and long levers my progress was limited !

Lincoln Gymnastics Club was formed 12 years ago and has a membership of
around 170 gymnasts, both boys and girls. The girls compete at levels 2,3,4
in both County and Regional competitions, an have on occasions competed at
National level. The boys have also competed at similar levels. The Club
currently has the WA County Champion within its girls senior squad. The
coaching staff consists of 5 class 4's, 6 class 5's under head coach Alan
Hutchinson. The club currently holds the award for " BAGA East Midlands
Club of the Year " .

I am also member of the executive committee for the Lincolnshire Amateur
Gymnastics Association which resources Gymnastics in Lincolnshire by
sponsoring the County Squads , co-ordinating competitions, and promoting
the Sport of Gymnastics.

I would like to think that my activities as a coach, together with my
colleagues, could be described as working at the ' grass roots ' of
gymnastics. Many of the youngsters start with the club at 6/7 years old
and progress through the squad system to higher competive levels. However
every step of the way their progress is backed up with thorough grounding
in conditioning and progressions. This is therefore the major interest for
me in joining the GYMN forum, as sharing new ideas in progressions/
conditioning can only enhance the job of the many hundreds of ' grass
root ' coaches, on which the foundation of the sport is based. ( We may
only coach up to the level of a tucked Tsukahara, but by heck its a good 'n
! )

Hello gymnastics lovers. Just thought I'd introcude myself before
too much time goes by. I've been a subscriber for a few weeks now.
My name Olukemi. A little different I know but my friends just
call me Kemi. I've always loved gymnastics but due to a nomadic
lifestyle at a young age I never really got to settle down and try it for
myself until high school when it was too late to cultivate my natural
talent so I just competed (rather successfully) at the high school level
and contemplated joining the university team but gave that up to
concentrate completely on my education.
Right now at the ripe old age of 25 gymnastics is strictly a spectator
sport that I love with no less enthusiasm. Since dance was the activity
I was most able to pursue it is what I most look for in a gymnast, how
she moves not just what she moves.
My favorite ( only one) is Dominique Dawes who I think is a perfect
dynamo. To me no one can touch her on floor. I am not too versed in the
international gymnasts so I listen to what you say and try and absorb.
Please bear with me if I ask ignorant questions but by all means don't
misunderstand, gymnastics is the most beautiful, difficult, challenging,
entertaining, wonderful sport in the whole world and I applaud all of us
who have at least attempted it in some form or another.

P.S.- Oh yes and when one of my best friends became a coach for her high
school alma mater gymanstics team she hired me to goive the girls some
training in their dance skills. It was pretty sad but by the end of the
year we had graceful gymnasts.

I apoligize to everyone for not introducing myself. I've written
several messages already. My name is Shawn and I am 23 years old.
I'm a senior in psychology at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I would
like to become a sports psychologist and work strictly with gymnastics
teams. My main hobby is keeping up with all the gymnastics
news(Int'l Gymnast) and studying the code of points for women. I
would like to, and will, become a judge one day.
If anyone wants info on U of A gymnastics, I usually know the answer,
or could find out for you. Some big name gymnasts here, if you
don't already know, are Kim Kelly, senior, Stephanie Woods, sophomore,

1st Round

-Kerri Strug(V)-Powerful block off the horse(9.7)

-Lanna Apiskuh(FX)-Weak dance and even weaker tumbling(8.375)

-Liz Reid-(FX)Beautiful arm movements(Oy,those flexible shoulders) but had a
low tuck open.

-Amanda-(BB)Small Wobble on fuete(9.475)

-Shannon Miller(FX)-Near flawless execution(9.7)

-Dominique Dawes(FX)-Dance could flow a little more,but the tumbling was in
the rafters.(9.575)

-Jennie Thompson(FX)-much improved dance over last year(9.375)

-Heather Brink(FX)-Wowsers,can she tumble!(9.05 too low)

-Jaycie Phelps(BB)-IMHO the best beam set(9.55)

Amanda's was better)

-Amy Chow(BB)-wobble on shoulder roll and the cartwheel.little off center on
the valdez,almost fell on full turn.Really shakey set.(8.65)

-Liz Reid(BB)-her full turn took my breath away(8.85)

-Shannon Miller(BB)-textbook beam(9.85)

-Dom Dawes(BB)-small wobble on shoulder roll.entire set looked just a tad bit

Subject: NCAA WOMEN

The discussion on Beth Wymer's(Michigan) full twisting double layout off bars
brings up some other great feats in women's NCAA.
1995
Jenny Hansen(UK)--handspring front full -- vault
Her coach said she's working on several new skills. A handspring front
layout-full-vault, On floor, double-double, double full-in, ect.. On beam;
full (she warmed it up for beam finals at NCAA's), front-half mount.
Kareema Marrow(UCLA) threw a double layout and ended with a pike double on
floor. Three of UCLA gymnast throw double layouts, Marrow, Stella
Umeh, Leah Homma. Several gymnasts throw double layouts off bars. Hop-fulls
--Agina Simpkins and Lori Strong of Georgia and Kim Bonaventura of Alabama
threw these and probably a couple more have. Anyway, thought I would
pass this on. If you don't know much about NCAA GYMNASTICS, in
my opinion, it's the most fun, by far, to watch. Anyone else agree?
I wish that (some of the)) USGF gymnasts would use some of the FX music
collegiate gymnasts use. There were a few who did at the U.S. Classic and the
crowd got into it more(instead of classical most of the time). Remember Wendy
Bruce's at the '89 Worlds. I think the judges liked it..9.875. What do you
think about USGF gymnasts using more upbeat music?
One more thing, someone commented that Jenny Hansen should try making
the national team or something like that, well, I agree. I know they
have college to worry about now, but really, there are some
collegiate gymnasts throwing just as much difficulty and better than
some of the USGF gymnasts. Since there will be no compulsories after
'96, I hope some collegiate gymnasts will try to.

Subject: INTRODUCTION

Hi all-

Since everyone is introducing themselves, I will as well...First, I think
this is really a good idea because as we all know, the national press
doesn't discuss or address gymnastics much and it is fun to see what
others think about different gymnastic related issues...

I am a 21 year old senior at the University of Michigan double majoring
in Statistics and Mathematics. I have some experience in gymnastics, but
I have many friends who are gymnasts so that is how I got interested.
I have been following gymnastics for 6 years, and am pretty knowledgeable
(or I think so)..anyway...I am looking to go get my masters in
Biostatistics and work with Cancer research..

I know a lot about University of Michigan gymnastics. We have a great
team..And next year we won't settle for 2nd...
I like NCAA's as well as National elite level...

Also, regarding NCAA gymnasts, I believe many can qualify for the
Olympics and should..It would defeat those disbelievers that think small
young gymnasts are the best. Jenny Hanson, Beth Wymer, Heather Kabnick,
Wendy Marshall, Stephanie Woods are just a few who could easily make the
Olympic team..all have competed in elite or Level 10..Hanson scored 9.9's
and above in the last NCAA's, something that is almost unheard of
otherwise and she is so consistent it is remarkable. NCAA gymnastics
deserves more attention..the gymnasts throw very difficult skills and are
mastering them..

Regarding Beth and her bars dismount: She decided to throw it at the
last minute (in the middle of the routine) because she knew without it,
she might not get the 10 or 9.95 needed. She had never thrown it
before. She is a remarkable gymnast and I would love her to make the
olympic team just as a bars specialist because she is great to watch on
that apparatus..

Anyway, this is an awesome idea, I encourage anyone to write to me to
discuss gymnastics or if you have Q's about U of M gymnastics.

Subject: Olympic trials

I will post an introduction in a week or so, but I would like to
respond to the question on the Olympic trials. There are only two places
in MA where the trials could be held and that is either Worcester
(Centrum) or Boston (the garden) and the last time I heard, the trials were
planned to be held in the new Boston Garden (the Fleet center). As
for when, I do not know so if any one else knows, please pass it along.

Shawn, I agree totally about NCAA's...The women are so talented and throw
such difficult skills. Plus, there is not one dominant figure, minus
Jenny Hanson...She dominates at NCAA finals, but in regionals or regular
season, there are several top gymnasts...plus working as a team
encourages their improving skills.

Hi All,

I agree that NCAA gymnast's are wonderful! They show Women's Gymnastics at
its best. I also hope to see many of them compete at the elite level after
1996 but......................I don't think we will see that.

The NCAA has rules that only allow the gymnasts to train X amount of hours.
I have recently spoke to several NCAA coaches and they all stated that the
girls are already stressed for enough time for studies and the sport.

Perhaps the NCAA will relax standards to allow elite competition in the
future.
DD Pollock from LSU and Doug from UGA both told me that they thought that the
girls would elect not to compete on the elite level
but........................They as coaches would
train and assist any girl that decided to compete!

Just my .02 worth!

PS.......Is there not a rule stating that a gymnast may only have one coach
at a time??
perhaps someone out there knows????

BUT, doesn't the NCAA allow a college kid to compete in
international meets in other sports if they're good

Well, I guess I might add that the men usually come from NCAA, so they
already are competing internationally.


As for the women, is it ME or are the scores a little infalted? I don't
see how anyone who scores a 9.95 at NCAAs can get that at Worlds or
other MAJOR international comp. (America's Cup, excluded, of course).
The scoring at NCAAs, atleast in my opinion, is very unreal. The exectution
is not always the best, but they get the big score simply because of
landing well or throwing a big trick. It seems like pre-Barcelona days
in the elite world.

They are good, and they are fun to watch, but they would get different
scores if competing against the worlds best.

OK, a freind had a letter from Olesia last year, and though I haven't got
it with me, remember most of it. Olesia's coach decided to make her take
a break from gymnastics to rest an injury, so she left Lake Krugloye, and
went back to Kirovograd. When the injury healed it was too late to
return to top soviet gymnastics so she had to retire.....she sais she
still doesn't understand why her coach decided to leave Moscow (my guess
is politics between her coach and Alexandrov?). She's now married, and
still living with her parents in Kirovograd, though she's hoping to get a
coaching position outside the USSR. As of last year, she had no children.

Is it just me or did you used to think that the the 'Physical Institute'
was like the Bermuda Triangle of gymnastics? Every time a soviet gymnast
entered the physical intsitute, we never heard from them again :(

As for the full twisting double layout off UB, apart from Gutsu doing it
at 92 Moscow News (a routine which earned her a 10!), Greek Vassou
Svarioudou has been doing it for the last couple of years.

This is in response to Jeff and his comments on elite versus NCAA. I feel
you can't compare the two. In the Georgia versus Alabama meet, Kim Kelly
was interviewed and one of the points she made was something to the effect
that she really liked the team emphasis of collegiate gymnastics. Yes, I
feel that the scoring is excessively high in college gymnastics and I also
feel that it does not adequately allow for differentiation in terms of
difficulty. When I saw the Georgia gymnasts last season someone had gobs
of difficulty in their beam routine and yet did not get credit for going
the extra mile, so to speak and throwing the extra moves. I don't remember
the code of points which was being used last season plus it has changed so
many times that my head starts to spin if I try to think about it. The
question is, what is college gymnastics for? Comparing elite and college
is like comparing apples and oranges. The college gymnasts may not make
the worlds, but you can have wonderful things like Hope Spivey-Sheeley
competing when she was 26 at the college level. I think it is wonderful
these ladies can compete and be women instead of being compared to little
teeny bopper types. At one time Olga Korbut had made a comment about how
there should be different levels of gymnastics so women can stay in the
sport longer. I agree with her. (I guess I am really showing my age!)
At the same time, I have two more questions for people to think about.
(If you are still reading)1) MY opinion is that the NCAA is allowing all
kinds of shenanigans to go on with men's football, yet OUR VERY BEST,
Shannon Miller and Dominique Dawes are considered ineligible because they
competed "professionally". I consider this the height of absurdity when
research has shown that women gymnasts and runners generally have among
the highest grade point averages. Plus, Shannon Miller has already won
an award for the outstanding high school athlete. When I was at the US
Classic on Sat and Dawes walked by, I started talking about the loss of
her scholarship to Stanford. This is just an opinion, I am curious to know
others. 2) What is people's opinion of recruiting former Soviet gymnasts
for collegiate gymnastics if they can cut academically. I like the idea,
but my sister said it wasn't fair to Americans. Your opinions please.

Yes, but the point is also that these college students have school, as
well as gymnastic responsibilities...sometimes there isn't enough time to
add competing as an elite..

However they are talented, and several easily could make the olympic
team..but usually you do not see a jump from college to elite because
they are competing against girls half their age.
It could be intimidating.
