Bican's birthday
Out of curiosity, does
anyone know what Ana Maria Bican's birthday is?
During
the American Cup broadcast, it was mentioned that she had turned 15
"yesterday," which would make it March 3rd, unless the
broadcast was
delayed, right? (Or am I getting oddly paranoid
here?)

True. But one could
hardly expect that to happen week-in and week-out, and I
would
put my money on the NBA Championship Game over Figure Skating Worlds
(or Olympics) any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Same goes, without
question,
for any Gymnastics event you can name. Hoops sell like a sonofagun,
Gymnastics rather less so. :-(
Not that I like this, but
it is the truth.

The ten-pacs
Stella Umeh won the all-around and three
events in leading her
UCLA team to the Pac-Ten title
Saturday night.
UCLA
was the clear victors though due to the inefficent
NCAA
scoring, this may not be reflected in the
team outcomes. I don't have
the final team scores on hand, but I know ASU came in second
with 195
something (if I heard correctly),
probably their best all year. U of
A
came in third, and OSU was a bit disappointed
with fourth.
Cal
came in last, U of WA second to last, and Stanford was
fifth. USC, WA St, and U of OR were not
there. I thought Oregon had a
team anyway.
The
"Can we say 'ow?'" award goes to the OSU
gymnast who, during
pre-competition warm-ups,
nailed a tumbling pass on floor and immediately
fell
to the ground, clutching her foot. Aparantly something extremely
sharp
was sticking up through the mat.
She was able to compete with a
bandaged foor. Other
than that I didn't see any other injuries, though
one
gymnast was lucky when she released too early on her bar dismount
(double tuck?) and landed on her
stomach, barely missing her head.
ASU
was lead by local Meghan Wright, who graduated a semester
early from high school to be able to compete this
season. ASU started on
beam, and nobody fell.
Wright appeared a bit tentative, as I have seen
her
in practice and she can leap MUCH better than she was doing. She does
ff lo lo and an oak tree,
and dismounted with a ro layout full though she
usually does a double back. Coach John Spini
protested her 9.7. I wanted
to go up to him and comment that none of her leaps went over
165 degrees.
I think the judges held their ground and her 9.7 was kept.
Wright
finished second in the all-around to
Umeh, and did full-twisting doubles
on floor and bars, and vaulted tucked front with a
half.
ASU
co-captain, underweight senior Tina Brinkman, suffered falls
on bars and floor (full-in). She was steady on beam and vault
(tucked
barani-out).
U of
A had cool music on floor, with "Whip it!" by Devo. Wasn't
that
a cool band? Did you know there is alt.fan.devo?
They also used
"Stray Cat Strut." All their routines looked the same
though, with front
to double back openings.
OSU
was very impressive on bars, with bodyline and good form
overall. They also looked to be in the best shape
next to UCLA.
Stanford just didn't have the difficulty or consistency to
challenge the top four, and U of WA appeared very out of
shape. By the
way, Czech veteran Pava Kinclova competes for U of WA now. She appears a
bit
overweight but still did vault and floor.
Cal
was last. I can't remember much
about them except that one
girl worked her long
braid into her choreography on floor.
Only in the
NCAA.
UCLA
nailed everything for the win despite the home crowd
favoratism towards ASU. They also had about 5 points more
difficulty then
everyone else, but this is not
rewarded overall. Some people look
cool
just standing around, and Kareema
Marrow looks cool standing around.
I
noticed this immediately when the teams
lined up.
Stella used her same routines, and nailed all her tumbling on beam
(HUGE
layout step-out on, ff layout to two feet ff lo step-out) but did an
oak
tree and quickly went down, and also was a bit shaky on her leaps
(lots of them though).
She stuck her tucked double back for the beam win.
She still jams to
the drums on floor, with a double layout and whip
immediate
tucked double for a 9.95. She won
bars with a 9.925
(consecutive giant-fulls to big Tkatchev, another Tkatchev, double
twist).
Marrow also had a lot of difficulty, with another double back off
beam, a double layout off bars, and great tumbling on
floor: WHIP to
double layout!
She was a bit unsteady on her landings on her tumbling,
and on vault as well.
Btw she had the best piked
front in the meet if not
the galaxy, but overrotated it for 9.875 and was in a five-way tie for
fifth! The
announcer was cool, he told the crowd that "in fourth place
with a 9.9 <sigh>, yes FOURTH with a 9.9!. . .
"
Leah
Homma is still in great shape and I believe got third on
beam
and third all-around. She also did
a very laid-out double layout
off bars.
Another UCLA girl did a double layout off bars as well, and a
layout pike double back on floor. Power on vault too. Like I said, UCLA
had
more difficulty than was rewarded.
Whip to double layout with a small
stumble
does not equal stuck double pike mount.
The scores say it does.
Okay, now to the leotards.
Just say no to Gym-Kin, that's my
view. OSU has the worst leos, black velvet with sequins. I guess they
couldn't
find anything in pumpkin orange, thank God. Stanford had black
leos with fluorescent blue and
pink, no school colors either. UCLA
had
solid blue leos the
color of the mats. Not a pretty
picture. ASU did its
best despite school colors that match MacDonald's. Washington, uh oh.
Yes, stretch lace
and bright purple. What's that
spell? Gym Kin. Even
Svetlana looks bad in that
one. Of course she opts for bright
pink. U of
A had the best leos, Christian Moreau I
think. Some sort of black and
white fabric in a busy pattern on top, with a solid white or
black I
believe bottom.
Well
to wrap it all up, let's talk about Stella. She butchered
her
hair but looks cute. She easily won
everything but vault (she's doing
tucked-Tsuk full). I
pointed this out to her, and she said that she
trying
to get the vault thing "sorted out," now that her old vault is
banned. That
appears to be her only weakness heading toward the NCAA
all-around
title, besides the scoring system that will have too many of
her competitors breathing down her neck. She also said that she IS going
to UCLA next year (quit your crying Brett). "Everything worked out"
there, so she is no longer transferring to Michigan. There is also
regionals
before NCAA's, and I guess her goal is one meet at a time.
Btw,
ESPN covered the meet. John Nabor and Maura Something were
there. They said it will be on April 7th, so be
sure to tune in and
hopefully they got me yelling
"dance it Stella!" in the background.

Mara,
Yes, I
have considered dropping an "e" from my
last
name, but unfortunately I don't have red
hair, so
I doubt if I could pass for Amy
Scherr----Oh
well!!! It was really weird when
she
was competing on the national team,
though,
because the last name is pronounced the
same way.
(Actually, that depended on the commentator).
But, often I
would turn on the T.V. and hear my
name!!! I always wanted to meet her, but
although
I saw her compete several times, I never really
got a chance to talk to her. Does anybody know
what
she's doing now? I know she had to
stop
competing because of all her injuries. I heard
one
time that her stress fractures were due to the
fact
that she was allergic to milk and, therefore,
hadn't
been receiving enough calcium, causing a
weakness
in her bones. You would think
that
somene would have
figured this out long before
they did, especially
with all the pounding your
body has to withstand
in gymnastics. I think it's
a shame that she had to quit because I don't think
she ever came close to reaching her potential.
She
really had an elegant line and the height on
her
tumbling was impressive!
Anyway, sorry this was so random!

SEC Championships
I've just returned from Gainesville, Florida where I
had the chance to take
in the SEC gymnastics
championship. While I see that Ron
has already filled
you all in on the scores and
highlights, I do have a few comments about the
meet.
First of all, after
witnessing the strengths of the top four team in the
conference
(ranked 1, 2, 4, and 6 in the country), I would have to say that
the SEC championship meet ranks as the best showcase of
college gymnastics
this side of the national
championships. The meet was very
competitive and
very exciting. As Ron said, either Georgia or Florida
could have won the meet
had they both not had to
count a fall on the beam.
I'm sure that the
Georgia fans will disagree with me, but after having
seen
each of the SEC teams at least twice this year, my nod for the best team
goes to Alabama.
Their routines can best be described as solid and very
"mature."
Going into the final rotation it was Georgia on beam, Alabama on
vault, and LSU on bars.
Florida had already finished with a 195.65 and could
slip into 1st place if all three teams didn't hit in their
final event. LSU
did a good job on bars from what I could see (only a few
glimpses from time to
time). I really spent much more time watching
Georgia and Alabama. Alabama's
vaulting was outstanding!!! Kim Kelly, I believe, received a ten and
two other
girls received 10s from one of the
judges. At the same time, Georgia
was
very wobbly on the beam, their achilles heal this year. It was obvious by
looking
at Suzanne's face during the final event that she knew the meet had
slipped away from her.
The individual meet
was not that much of a contest with Kristen Guise
taking
the crown relatively easily. I
suspect that Jenny Hansen would have
taken the
title, though, had it not been for the face plant she took after
missing a release move on the bars. She scored 9.9+ on at least two
other
events that I can remember (beam and
vault). If Jenny Hansen is on
at
NCAAs, it will be tough for anyone to beat her. Kristen Guise could be a
darkhorse for a top 5 finish.
What's with these SEC
coaches? It seemed as if the
coaches were competing
in some kind of fashion
shown. Sarah Patterson (Alabama)
wore a rather formal
dress with heels and hose and
looked like she was going to a dinner party at
the
president's house. Her earrings
were about the gaudiest I've ever seen!!
Judy Avener
(Florida) wore a sapphire blue dress with fringe on the sleeves and
hem. She looked
like she would have fit in at a roaring 20's party. D-D
Pollack (LSU) wore a stunning jacket with a
bayou bengal tiger print and a
gold
top. As pretty as the jacket was,
she looked like she was ready for
Mardi Gras. Suzanne Yoculan
(Georgia)--what can I say??? Suzanne wore a
red
sequin dress (short) with red stiletto heals. She would fit in on
Bourbon street when it wasn't Mardi Gras with that outfit. Were they all
playing
up to the cameras??? (meet was filmed by Jefferson Pilot) What's
wrong
with wearing a nice warm-up suite like the coaches of our elite gymnasts
do? Can anyone
explain this to me?
Overall,
excellent meet and a lot of fun.
Alabama won the meet, but look
for Georgia
as the favorite for the NCAA's since they are being held in Athens.
Georgia
draws a good crowd and they are loud and obnoxious. It will be
a
definite advantage. It will nice
when NCAA gymanstics draws a big enough
crowd so that
nationals can be held at a neutral site. WHile their is
no
doubt that it's a lot of fun when meets are
held at places like Tuscaloosa,
Athens, and Salt Lake City, it is an unfair
advantage for the "home" team.
See you at the NCAA's

compete in professional

Hi
Alex and others,
You can write to Gutsu in

And
you can always ask me for addresses and bypass the incovenience
of
waiting for the mail from IG. (I don't exactly
get things out by return
mail, though it's usually
2 weeks or less.) ... I keep a copy of the
