A while ago someone asked about the pink Power Ranger's gymnastics
backround. While looking aroung on internet I found something about
her:

Her name is Amy Jo Johnson and has been in gymnastics since she was 7.
She was a competitive gymnast for 10 years and appeared in
international gymnastics meets in Europe.

A while ago in the newspaper they had an article about Mitch Gaylord.
He released his first exercise video called The Men's Total Body
Workout. He was in Batman Forever as Robin's (Chris O'Donnell)
stuntdevil. He also played a part of Mitch Grayson, Robin's aerialist
brother "who meets an ugly demise at the hands of Two-Face".

By the way Mark your poem, The Beam Dream, was great. Good job :)

To All:
I received a call with some info on who qualified to the World University
Games:
   (1) The University of Florida's senior, Kristen Guise, was the only
non-incoming collegiate freshman to qualify for the 4-person team. I do not
have the names of the other three, but I was told that one will be attending
Georgia and another will be attending Cal-State Ful. However, I'm not putting
a lot of reliance on this information, other than the fact that Guise
qualified.
    (2) I also heard that Georgia's Leslie Angelies AND and a Georgia
incoming freshman (NOT Amanda Borden) tore their ACL's.
    (3) University of Florida Head Coach Judi Avener was chosen the head
coach of the World University team and Georgia Assistant Coach Doug McAvinn
was chosen as the World University Games Assistant Coach.

To All:
The University of Florida was chosen by NCAA coaches by unanimous vote as
the host site for the 1997 NCAA National Women's Gymnastics Championships.
The choice of Florida means the championships will stay in the
Southeastern United States and in the Southeastern Conference three years in
a row, having been at Georgia this year and set for Alabama next year.

Hello Karen,

Thanks for the reply and your interest. I am new to this forum ( 2days ) so
I have not yet got a feel for the kind of information that people pass
around, therefore its difficult to judge whether or not it is the right
forum. However if there is a particular area of training / progressions you
want to tackle or discuss then I'm willing to have a go, if my expertise
allows !

Subject: NCAA vs elite competition

I wanted to add my two cents to this ongoing discussion.  After spending the
past four years as a member of a NCAA division one gymnastics team (Go
UMass!) I agree that comparing collegiate gymnastics and elite gymnastics is
like comparing apples and oranges.  Although both groups are doing
gymnastics, they are two different sports.  Not only is the scoring different
as was already mentioned, but there is an entirely different attitude about
the sport.  College gymnastics is a time to have fun, to emphasize team,
(from what I understand is that even Jenny Hansen looked terrible in warmups
at NCAAs until her teammates showed up!), and to enjoy the fruits of all the
work you put in as an age group or elite gymnast.  Not to say that you don't
work hard as a college gymnast, because you most certainly do.  I came home
from many a workout completly useless to do homework until I took a nap!

Collegiate women gymnasts for the most part do not want to compete
internationally anymore.  The ones who have competed at that level seem to be
happy that it is over, and are enjoying their new experiences in the sport.
To use Michigan gymnasts as an example, Beth Wymer, Heather Kabnick and
Wendy Marshall (and I think one other) all qualified to World University
Games Trials, but NONE chose to go!  Different people have different goals in
the sport, and while some would kill to have a chance to compete in Japan,
others are content to enjoy the collegiate season with their team.  Many of
these gymnasts gave up their teenage years to pursue their gymnastics dreams,
and now I think they just want to enjoy the other parts of life, and attempt
to be college students.

For those whose careers are just "blossoming" in college, I think that not
having to do compulsories could be a great opportunity.  But I don't think
you'll see too many collegiate gymnasts at USAs anytime soon.

<I'm confused; they upgraded it when?  Haven't heard about that.  It was
still a B in the FIG Code last time I judged, a year ago.>

The upgraded it last fall, I think. It makes sense because a layout
flyaway-full is a B, so I would think a double should be a C.

BTW---what is a double tuck on floor worth?? I've heard a D, but I don't
think that is right

Maiers is not competing at the USOF is because she is injured--I can't

I guess it takes a parent to clear all this mess up!

The top six girls are going to Japan in August. This is a six member team,
not 4 and two alternates, just six! I don't know how many are incoming, but I
know that at least two aren't incoming.  I have the complete list on
FlashPoint, but here is the team.

1.  Karin Lichey        UGA
2.  Amy Murakami    Stanford
3.  Kristen Guise      UF
4.  Heidi Hornbeek    U Arizona
5.  Katy Maty           Cal State Fuller
6.  JULIE BALLARD  UGA GYMDAWGS!!!!!!!

If you want more, call FlashPoint 404-287-7320.  I also have all the scores
from Classic.

I got my International Gymnast mag. today. It was really cool. They had
an interview with Oksana Kniznik. In brief Oksana said that she still
keeps in touch with her old teammates like Dina Kotchetkova and Oksana
Fabrichnova by writing letters and getting together at meets. Her goal
is Atlanta and she wants to be a choreographer when she grows up. At
the end of the interview the interviewer gave her a magazine witha big
picture of her doing a Yang Bo jump and a Bugs Bunny wallet and a
cartoon shirt. Oksana said that it was the first time she had seen a
picture of herself competing.

Also in the magazine it had a bit about Brown's gymnastics. Rita Brown
now has a facility in Houston. It is really cool. (They have a picture
of it):
5 floor mats
1 unspring for rythmic
30 beams
8 set of Bars
4 vaulting runs
2 tumbling tracks
men's equiptment
and more!

Pretty cool huh?

My daughter is at Brown's in Houston this week for camp and she is
loving it.  It is apparently  (according to their brochures) the
largest training facility in the US at approx. 46,000 sq. ft.
Svetlana Boguinskya (sp?) is there right now also, so she got to watch
her workout and had her picture taken with her.  I assume that
Brown's Houston girls will begin competing in USAG this year, last
year they weren't at the district championships so I guess they
weren't in full swing yet. What a district to have to compete
in---Karolyi's, Cypress Academy, and now Brown's!  But it is also an
incredible opportunity to see some of the potential future top
"stars".

Living near Houston, my daughter has had a lot of opportunities to
see and interact with top gymnasts. She has been able to participate
in meets at Karolyi's ranch and has Henrietta Onodi attend one of the
meets held in our gym.  She (Henrietta) is attending school in San
Antonio and will be working out in our gym in August.

And what is with Dawes' scholarship?  I never heard either that she lost it.
That was always her goal, to get a college scholarship, I wouldn't
think she'd risk it.
