A question. How does one qualify for the nat'l HS champs? I've heard of
them before, but never of people actually going to them...

Thanks!

Hi GYMNers,

In a Belgian newspaper (Gazet van Antwerpen - 05/29) I found the
following results:

Tumbling - finals:
Salto:
 1. Elena Blushina (Rus)       19.68
 2. Tatjana Jevdokimova (Kaz)  19.34
 3. Sigy Van Renterghem (Bel)  19.16
 4. Kathryn Peberdy (GBr)      18.86
 5. Mariene Bayet (Fra)        17.56
Twist:
 1. Viktoria Denilkina (Rus)   19.66
 2. Mariene Bayet (Fra)        19.15
 3. Sigy Van Renterghem (Bel)  19.14
 4. Kathryn Peberdy (GBr)      18.80
 5. Tatyana Zhoftopup (Ukr)    18.38

Unfortunately I don't have any other information. I guess they only
found it worth mentioning the above results because the Belgian girl
reached 3rd place twice. BTW, these results took only some 10 lines
amongst three full pages of last weekend's sports results, ie. three
pages of pure results without any comments, and not counting the ten
pages of articles about soccer, cycling, athletics an F1-racing.

Does anyone else know something more about these championships ?

cu on GYMN (or in Berlin for some of you - Hi Helen),

Erik.

Thanks to Debbie for the report on the Romanian competition:

Is she any relation to Theodora U. from the 1976 Romanian Olympic team
(4th in AA, if I remember correctly)?

Qualifications to HS Nationals is probably different depending on which state
you live in.  One true requirement is that you must be a senior in hs.  Here
in Washington we just wait until after the state championships and then start
with number 1 all around and go down the list until we have enough gymnasts.
Teams at the meet consist of four competitors on each event.  Not everybody
has to be an all around gymnast, but I think the number of entrants per state
is six.

This meet is really quite fun and it does involve the entire spectrum of
gymnastics from true High School athlete to almost elite level athletes.
 Hope this helps.

On Monday, May 29, mgersten@CapAccess.org wrote, regarding HS natls:
>Texas girls also won first with N.Y. in second<
I can definetly say that it was actually PA who came in second because some
girls from my school's team competed there this weekend, and Erika Flamer
from my school was fourth in the all-around (Yeah!).

There is a designee (for male and for female programs) in each state with
high school programs.  It is up to that individual to appropriately select
the participants for the team.

In order to be eligible to be selected, an athlete must first, be a
graduating senior and secondly, have participated in a sufficient number of
competitions as a member of their high school's team (or been a member with
an injury during the season, etc.) This qualification must be verified by a
letter from the athletic director or principal.

In making the actual selection, each state probably does it somewhat
dfifferent. NY Boys used a coaches committee to evaluate athletes based on
the two separate championships within the state and seasonal rankings to
determine the order in which athletes were selected for the opportunity to
participate. You are entitled to place up to four individuals on each event,
with a total limit of six members to the women's team, and seven on the
men's (due to the increased number of events). In practice, few states ever
use their entire allotment.

Additionally, unlike regular season varsity athletics in a high
school program, since Nathl Fed doesn't recognize national tournaments, and
this is out of season for most athletes, actual funding for this meet for
the athletes comes from all types of sources: from personal funding to
association to school funding.

In any case, this meet is one of the real enjoyable meets of the
year for the athletes and other participants, having been at the previous
three (missed this year's)

Subject: HELP - Pan Am Games photos

Hi folks,

I was contacted today by Mr. Michel Arsenault, coach of Marleen Lavoie
who recently competed for Canada at Pan-Am Games.  He was wanting
photos of Marleen from the Games and wondered if I knew of where
he could buy some.

If anyone knows of anyone who would've taken *any* photos at the
meet (aside from Dave Black who I've contacted already) please let
me know and I will pass the message on to Michel.

Off topic here:  Would the Canadians who subscribe to Gymn let
me know who you are?  Karen Kuder & I are trying to compile
the names of all 14 of us!  (15? more?)  We're interested to
know where everyone is from.

Later,

I am extremely interested in coaching trampolining within the US, as well
as possibly doing research/lecturing in sports psychology. If anyone has
any information concerning this I would be very grateful to hear from them

As far as I know, trampolining in the US is pretty much dead except for
some use as a training aid for gymnastics.  Something about the US
liability laws and legal system and the injury rate on tramp...

Trampoliners are crazy - when I was at gymnastics camp one year, when
there was a little bit of trampolining left in the US (mid 70s), they
took the normal bed off the tramp and put on the 6mm bed for "serious"
trampoliners...  Trampoliners are crazy.

Think twice about using wrist guards for tumbling on a regular basis.
While braces are important when you already have an injury or excessive
strain, I believe they are considered generally weakening and thus not a
good idea for healthy joints.

I'm not positive about this; it was the accepted position at my gym 15
years ago, but it may no longer be.  Anyone else know?

Ilene, whose wrist problems were a major part of why she left the sport...
