Re: PRO COMPETITION, ZMESKAL, BOGI
I
want to comment on the professional competitions. If they want
to
be a success, they have to worry more about gymnastics and less about
entertainment. I
went to the International Gymnastics Cup in Baltimore
in
1994, and last year in Portland.
After watching this year, I think
they need
to change. This entertainment
gymnastics should be in
exhibitions, not the
competitions. Gymnastics should
follow skating's
lead by making professional
gymnasts strive for grace and a mature look.
Just
my thoughts,
Mikester Bee

Amy Chow's bars mount?
The latest issue of IG says Chow's added
"a mind-blowing new uneven bars
mount which
she debuted in January." What
is this skill? Is it
mind-blowing, or is that description just hype? The only mount I
can
think of that was mind-blowing was by a Russian in '89 event
finals (memory fading, so please bear with me if this
description
is not accurate) who did something
like a roundoff, arabian
flip
over the low, catch the high bar. Or maybe I just imagined it.:)
Actually,
come to think of it, very few gymnasts have a bars mount that I
think of as exciting (like Kim Kelly's roundoff,
back dive catch the low
bar skill) or even just
unusual (Henrietta Onodi's full twist before the
kip.)
so I don't even care if the description is
hype. Anything that isn't a kip
or
a straddle over the low is something to talk
about. Hope to see it soon.

No, you didn't imagine it; it's been done. For the record, the skill was
done at least as early as about 1982 (an American by the
name of
Brumbaugh--I forget her first name
[Julianne, maybe? Anyone know
who
I'm talking about?]--was doing it back
then. Unless my memory's
getting
creative on me :). Anyway, one of my favorites is Gurova's RO,
full-twisting ff to handstand on low.

Amy Chow's bar mount, SHERWIN HELP!
1) A good description of Amy
Chow's bar mount can be found in the March
IG issue, in the article about
the Reno Challenge. If this is as whacked
as it
sounds, I want to see it!
2) Sherwin, please email me,
I need to talk to you. Thanks

Waller's FX so we could see Scott steal Cindy Waller away! How about
that
Cindy?
>Another man from CO, I can't remember his
>name, put on a skull mask type thing and took off his shirt
for the rings.
> He did amazing strength moves. He went into a left iron cross, the a
right,
>then a straight all in a row!
Paul
O'Neill. Paul is a specialist - he
does nothing except SR. Again I
find
myself agreeing with Peter Vidmar's comment. For his size, Paul has to
be one of the strongest men on the planet! He certainly showed that on one
of the longest, strongest routines I've ever watched. When he crossed his
leg during the cross, I laughed at Peter's comment -
"Yeah, he's just
rubbing it in for those of
us who can't do that!" Right
Pete! I noticed
your crosses were always so poor!
While in a straight iron cross (I'm not
sure
>if that's what it's called, that trick is
very far in the future for me) he
>crossed his
legs and tapped his foot in the air impatiently to give the
>impression that it was very easy to do and he was
bored. He held it for a
>substantial amount of time. It was really amazing! Another man was dressed
>as Superman for the raised bar and it was pretty cool.
Bill
Roth. It's nice to see Bill
completely well and uninjured!
>But it was a great
competition! I wish there were more
like it!
I agree. It's
great for these "old" athletes to have a forum to show
they've still got it! It's also nice to see them having so much
fun with
their sport. I think you'll see some more of these
exhibitions.
Comments from other posts talked about the scores being
too high. I think
Cindy Waller
was right - it's entertainment.
Also, I don't think the judges
had many
guidelines, so it was probably pretty difficult for them to score.
You
know, the old "apples and oranges" thing.
I love to watch
major competitions and watch those hard tricks being thrown;
but, I think there's room for this type of competition
too. From TV, it
looked like a good sized crowd.
