Subject: Trophee Massilia

>From yesterday's _l'Equipe_, the Trophee Massilia competition will take
place from Dec. 1-3 in Marseille. Last year 18,000 spectators attended
the 3-day meet, and 15,000 schoolchildren watched the training sessions.
RUS, ROM, CHN, UKR, BLR, FRA, ESP and USA will participate (I don't know
if other countries will take part, too). Some of the competing gymnasts
(as mentioned in the article) are Kochetkova, Grosheva, O. Yurkina,
Milosovici, Canqueteau, Begue, Teza, and some girls "from the national
gymnastics center in Beijing."

Hopefully, I'll be able to post results early next week.

I believe Jenny Hansen competed for Munsinger's. I'm not sure what
state that is in, I want to say Minnesota???

Men Who Use Computers Are The New Sex Symbols Of The `90s

I get about 100 e-mail messages a day from readers of my comic
strip "Dilbert." Most are from disgruntled office workers,
psychopaths, stalkers, comic-strip fans -- that sort of person.
But a growing number are from women who write to say they think
Dilbert is sexy. Some say they've already married a Dilbert and
couldn't be happier.

If you're not familiar with Dilbert, he's an electrical engineer
who spends most of his time with his computer. He's a nice guy
but not exactly Kevin Costner.

Okay, Dilbert is polite, honest, employed and educated. And he
stays home. These are good traits, but they don't exactly explain
the incredible sex appeal. So what's the attraction?

I think it's a Darwinian thing. We're attracted to the people
who have the best ability to survive and thrive. In the old days
it was important to be able to run down an antelope and kill it
with a single blow to the forehead.

But that skill is becoming less important every year.

Now all that matters is if you can install your own Ethernet card
without having to call tech support and confess your
inadequacies to a stranger whose best career option is to work in
tech support.

It's obvious that the world has three distinct classes of
people, each with its own evolutionary destiny:

Knowledgeable computer users who will evolve into godlike
non-corporeal beings who rule the universe (except for those who
work in tech support).

Computer owners who try to pass as knowledgeable but secretly
use hand calculators to add totals to their Excel spreadsheets.
This group will gravitate toward jobs as high school principals
and operators of pet crematoriums. Eventually they will become
extinct.

Non-computer users who will grow tails, sit in zoos and fling
dung at tourists.

Obviously, if you're a woman and you're trying to decide which
evolutionary track you want your offspring to take, you don't
want to put them on the luge ride to the dung-flinging Olympics.
You want a real man. You want a knowledgeable computer user with
evolution potential.

And women prefer men who listen. Computer users are excellent
listeners

because they can look at you for long periods of time without
saying anything. Granted, early in a relationship it's better if
the guy actually talks. But men use up all the stories they'll
ever have after six months. If a woman marries a guy who's in,
let's say, retail sales, she'll get repeat stories starting in
the seventh month and lasting forever. Marry an engineer and she
gets a great listener for the next 70 years.

Plus, with the ozone layer evaporating, it's a good strategy to
mate with somebody who has an indoor hobby. Outdoorsy men are
applying suntan lotion with SPF 10,000 and yet by the age of 30
they still look like dried chili peppers in pants. Compare that
with the healthy glow of a man who spends 12 hours a day in front
of a video screen.

It's also well established that computer users are better
lovers. I know because I heard an actual anecdote from someone
who knew a woman who married a computer user and they reportedly
had sex many times. I realize this isn't statistically valid,
but you have to admit it's the most persuasive thing I've written
so far.

If you still doubt the sexiness of male PC users, consider their
hair. They tend to have either: (1) male pattern baldness -- a
sign of elevated testosterone -- or (2) unkempt jungle hair --
the kind you see only on people who just finished a frenzied bout
of lovemaking. If this were a trial I think we could reach a
verdict on the strong circumstantial evidence alone.

I realize there are a lot of skeptics out there. They'll
delight in pointing out the number of computer users who wear
wrist braces and suggest it isn't the repetitive use of the
keyboard that causes the problem. That's okay. Someday those
skeptics will be flinging dung at tourists. Then who'll be
laughing? (Answer to rhetorical question: everybody but the
tourists.)

Henry Kissinger said power is the ultimate aphrodisiac. And Bill
Clinton said that knowledge is power. Therefore, logically,
according to the U.S. government, knowledge of computers is the
ultimate aphrodisiac. You could argue with me -- I'm just a
cartoonist -- but it's hard to argue with the government.
Remember, they run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms,
so they must know a thing or two about satisfying women.

You might think this was enough to convince anyone that men who
use computers are sexy. But look at it from my point of view:
I'm getting paid by the word for this article. I'm not done yet.

In less enlightened times, the best way to impress women was to
own a hot car. But women wised up and realized it was better to
buy their own hot cars so they wouldn't have to ride around with
jerks.

Technology has replaced hot cars as the new symbol of robust
manhood. Men know that unless they get a digital line to the
Internet no woman is going to look at them twice.

It's getting worse. Soon anyone who's not on the World Wide Web
will qualify for a government subsidy for the home-pageless. And
nobody likes a man who takes money from the government, except
maybe Marilyn Monroe, which is why the CIA killed her. And if
you think that's stupid, I've got 100 words to go.

Finally, there's the issue of mood lighting. Nothing looks
sexier than a man in boxer shorts illuminated only by a 15-inch
SVGA monitor. If we agree that this is every woman's dream
scenario, then I think we can also agree that it's best if the
guy knows how to use the computer. Otherwise, he'll just look
like a loser sitting in front of a PC in his underwear.

In summary, it's not that I think non-PC users are less
attractive. It's just that I'm sure they won't read this article.

After becoming the 1992 junior National Champion, Lanna Apisukh struggled
with many injuries. She left Brown's Gymnastics in 1994. She is currently
training at Broadway Gymnastics in Oviedo, Florida. She is coached by 1984 &
1988 Olympian Scott Johnson. She recently competed in the Sabae Worlds in an
attempt to qualify Thailand into the 1996 Olympics. Lanna didn't manage to
qualify, but is still training.

OK, I'm going to get famed for this, but I've never been one to hold back on
account of other people: Did anyone notice a very disturbing comment made in
an article supposedly celebrating the beauty of this very wonderful sport.
In a category misnamed as "Tough as Nails" they complemented a girl who hurt
her ankle in warmups enough to be carried off, but then competed. This is
one of the points that Joan Ryan is trying to warn this loving but demanding
community: we have to care for these kids, and that is what they are: kids.

Las Vegas Nevada and GVAC. i competed level 5 in Washington and won Bars and
last year i compete level 6 and have now skipped to level 8. Our gym has
beginners through level 10 and we had two girls make the Talent Opertonity
Program(TOPS). My favorite gymnasts are Alexis Brion and Shannon Miller. If

Yes, some of us think it is cool that TV coverage also includes gymnasts'
parents... Well, in my view, not always...

Indeed, anything could be done in bad taste and unfortunately, TV media has
proved this right once more. On top of their tasteless comments about
gymnasts' performances and other things (keeping bringing up ficticious bad
blood btw gymnasts is only one more example), I remember the coverage of the
Olympic Trials and Olympic Games of 1992 showed the disappointed faces of
parents of gymnasts who had just fallen off the beam or stepped out of bounds.
This is the ultimate in mental cruelty from my perspective; moreover, just in
case you missed it the first time around, they played re-runs of parents
reacting to their kids' mistakes by turning away their faces.

Would you like the world to see that you have disappointed your folks? Even
if it is not the case, would you like the situation to be portrayed as such?
Everytime TV intrudes in our lives, we run the risk of misinterpretation or
delibrate showing of only one non-representative aspect of a situation.

Yes, parents play a big role in their kids' success and they do deserve the
credit. But the media do not serve any cause but their own. If you accept
them to show the more private sides of your life, be prepared to be exposed in
good and in bad times. Believe me, when the media portrays any hop on a
landing as a failure (regardless of the overall achievement), they make you
feel like a failure... although I personnally hardly see anyone reaching the
Olympic trials as a failure. They hurt even more when they let everyone guess
that your parents may see you as a failure as well.

Media are out for sensasionnalism and if they need your failure to boost the
drama of their coverage, they will use it... but not necessarily as you would
appreciate it.

Subject: Gymn cartoon-bad press!

Did anyone catch this cartoon in their local newspaper. I clipped it
but now I'm not sure exactly what day it was printed. Definitly
in the week or two before thanksgiving.

It was posted in the Washington Post and the name of the cartoon is
called Tank McNamara.

First picture:

In background girl on beam and a girl on bars.
Man is talking to two other adults. Man is saying :
"A girl has puberty, her center of gravity changes, cannot do gymnastic"
<from his english and the way he is drawn we are to draw that it is
foreign coach>. The two adults are listening closely.

Second picture:

Coach is saying :
"you sign contract! you agree daughter will not begin puberty until
at least 18 years old!
<from this we draw the other two adults are the parents of a
girl at the gym>

parents both a little surprised respond :

" We'll have a talk with her!"

Any comment out there? Definitly does help
with the bad press that is already out there. I've never really seen
this cartoon strip before so I don't know if their style is to
be sarcastic or if they think it was just a subject to poke at?

1)According to the IG coverage of the 1990 JO Nationals, jenny Hansen
won the senior division with 75.275 points and was competing for
Munsinger's. But when she qualified for senior elite nationals in 1991,
she was at northland.

2)Shawn metioned that Rachel Rochelli and Heidi Harriman were going to
Alabama next year. Has anyone heard where Heather brink, Elizabeth Reid
and Amy Chow have decided to go to, if any place?

3)And...if Scott mackall is still on this mailing list, please email
me. I have a question for you.

ONE last thing, then I will shut up. I've been looking for a way to
pass on a thank you to a member of this list who went to the Atlanta
Invite and who brought me back a program. This seemed a pretty public
way of thanking him, and he deserves a little recognition for the
great guy he is. Thanks, Ken.

LIGHTEN UP!!! The cartoon was pretty funny and took a solid pot shot at the
tendency to try to get younger and younger (smaller and lighter) kids at a
high level very soon. If we can't laugh at ourseves about some of the issues
and problems we face in this sport, we become nothing but a pain in the butt.
Furthermore, complain enough about something as harmless as this, and people
will soon believe that the cartoon is truth and not humor!
