The Latest Discussion Topics
I
have been busy lately, but I wanted to comment on some of the
things being discussed lately on the list.
First, the discussion of Olympic Team coach for the U.S. Women.
If
Bela has Dominique and Kerri on the team he should be
the coach. I think
the Bela/Steve fight is over so he
would probably would be fair. Bela is
simply the most
experienced.
Second, this Kim Zmeskal question. I am a big fan but I think it
is very premature to put her on a prediction list to make
the U.S. team not
to mention individual
medals. Remember she has not
competed an amateur meet
in a long time. I think its great she is trying, but I
have not seen
anything to convince me she has a
chance.
Lastly, gymnastics vs. figure skating question. Figure skating
had
the Tonya/Nancy mess. This proved
very profitable. More
importantly
USAG does a terriable job promoting
meets. They NEVER try to reach
out
beyond the gymnastics community to increase
attendance. Also meets need to
be different.
Make them faster, have less particpants, sign
famous gymnasts
to contracts so they have to come
(Shannon Miller at the Goodwill Games),
and stick
with and easy format that anyone can understand.
Just
my .02 cents,
Mikester Bee

Gymnastics Tours
I think that gymnastics would be better if they did
tours in places that
are not know for
gymnastics. In Michigan, there is alwyas some kind of
skating
tour Stars on Ice, Discover, World Professional or whatever.
However
gymnastics is not big here. Many
people will not get to see
the Rock and Roll
challenge, or Burt and Nadia or someone from another
coutry. I
have never seen a gymnstics meet and I would like to
see one,
but
with $25 a ticket and the meet in some place like California I guess
I will
have to stick to what is shown on television. 6

One More Thing
The attack on Nancy Kerrigan was in Detroit, but even
before that the
arena was full becuase
it was skating. I think that
whoever plans the
sites should do like the IOC and
the Olympics and try and rotate
the
sites of events so that everybody has the
chance to watch. 6

Chunichi Cup
I just received my February IG
yesterday, and as I was glancing at it this
morning,
I noticed that there were two American men in the competition, but
it didn't appear as though there were any American women. Is
that true, and
why so?
By the way, I was
watching a TV commercial today and though I don't remember
who it was for, there is a commercial on the air that has
some of the
American gymnasts in it.
Happy
Gymnastics,
Shari
Hopefully we'll see the USA on the medal stands
in Atlanta.

Doesn't USAG already have a club
directory? I could swear I had a
copy a
few years back. The NCAA may have a list of college
gymnastics programs
(anyone know?).

Write CBS!
I am posting this message to urge EVERY SINGLE MEMBER of Gymn to take 5
minutes to
e-mail CBS regarding this weeks The Client episode. Even
those
of us who missed the episode have read enough about the episode
here on Gymn to understand the
ridiculous stereotypes that The Client
created and
perpetuated in the episode. Ten or
twenty messages will not
make a difference to CBS
executives, but 650 might. We want
CBS to know
that we will not stand for their
spreading their ignorance of our sport
to the
American public. We want them and
the public to know that
gymnasts whose parents or
coaches want their success more than they do
themselves
simply do not make it to high levels of competition. Nothing
can
compel a person to dedicate themselves mentally and physically to
the goal of excellence except for true love for
gymnastics. Other
stereotypes may exist in perhaps 1% of elite gymnasts, but
certainly not
every stereotype in a single
athlete. In addition, these
problems are
NOT unique to gymnastics, but are found in the top levels of
all sports,
and are being addressed and fought
throughout the gymnastics community.
Before you compose your message,
sit a moment and reflect on the reasons
that you
love gymnastics. Think about the
valuable lessons that the
sport teaches young
people. Think about the sense of
accomplishment a
5-year-old gains when he or she completes his or her first
cartwheel.
I hope that I have gotten each one of you a little fired up
and made you
realize that the only way to get this
message across is together. My
letter to CBS will not make a difference, but all of our
letters can.
The address at which you can contact CBS is:
marketing@cbs.com
Happy gymming,
Kerry

Non US gymnasts
Okay, how in the world can some gymnasts train here in
the US because their
own countries have such poor
training facilities, but compete for a different
country
still? Like Bogi,
she has trained in the US for years, but yet she
can
compete for Belarus at the Olympics?
How? Eileen Diaz for Puerto
Rico,
Yelena Piskun? Isn't there a rule to keep your citzenship you have to live
in
that country so many days of the year?
Why should she be able to train in
leisure
in whatever country she want's while the rest of the team doesn't
have the money to and are training in their home country in
a totally
different situation; coaches, equipment,
hours, etc.?

Actually, ABC aired the European Cup last year, which is a
different meet.
Btw,
did ABC air the 1987 Euros? Someone
posted that they had
covered this meet since 1975,
missing 1994, but I don't recall seeing
1987 Euros on TV.
