Subject: basic gymn question-the book (sorry)

Julissa Gomez was paralyzed doing a Yurchenko at a competition in Japan.
She died a few years later, I think.
Wasn't this one of the sories in Little Girls In Pretty Boxes? Recently
there has been an article in a magazine about Julissa. The title was Little
Girls..... It only showed the bad points of gymnastics. It didn't mention
anything about clubs like Cincinnatti, (I think Mary Lee Tracy and Kelli
Hill are the two best coaches in the world!!), who encourage the gymnasts to

speak freely to their coaches and enforce a strong Christian belief.
From what I read I would never, ever want to read *THE BOOK*

Subject: Serious injuries...

To add to the serious injuries list, Elena Mukhina (1978 world champion) was
of course paralysed from the neck down in a fall in 1980 shortly before the
opening of the Moscow Olympics.  I read somewhere that she had a fall from
bars, and somewhere else that she landed on her neck during a floor routine
in training.  I also remember reading that her training hadn't been going
well, and that she was training alone, whithout anyone spotting for her, in
a last ditch attempt to make the USSR team, but I don't know if this is true
or not.

I remember in the British press at the time, that there were rumours that
she had been killed, but these proved to be unfounded.

Subject: Serious Injuries....

Hi, my name is Liz, and I'm a new subscriber.  I am a freshman at
the University of Vermont, and I'm on the gymnastics team.  I was a Level
9 in Connecticut last year, and I had a serious injury at the beginning
of the season last year.
I was warming up a handspring front vault in a meet and I opened up
too soon and landed on my neck.  I had to have surgery done (a spinal
fusion) and my doctor told me that in my type of injury (dislocated
cervical vertabrae) only 5% of the people ever move again.  My vertabrae
were about 1 mm away from severing my spinal cord, and every one thinks
that I'm crazy to try to do gymnastics again, but I only saw it as
another injury.  I'm very lucky and by all means I should be a
quadrapeligic right now, but someone must be looking out for me.
Gymnastics is a very serious and dangerous sport, but with proper
training, accidents and injuries are avoidable.  People only usually
hear about the famous and/or well known gymnasts that sustain serious
injuries but I just wanted every one to know that there are more than
just one or two gymnasts out there that have been seriously injured and
at risk of paralysis.
I just wanted to say, also , that I very much enjoy reading posts
from the Gymn Forum and that they are very informative.  :)

Subject: current juniors

Is there an age limit to the junior competition level? Is there a ranking for
gymnasts who are currently at the junior level? If so, who are the top 10? If
not, which gymnasts are consistently at the top of junior competitions?  Also I
am new to this forum and I was wondering how a gymnast progresses to
competition at the elite level? Also is the cost of training at the elite level
at gyms such as Karolyis, Nonno's, and Hill's staggering?

I heard she got injured on floor.  This was mentioned in the videotape
"Gymnastics Greatest Stars" (which, BTW, is a pretty decent historical
overview of men's and women's gymnastics from the 1964 Olympics to the 1984
Olympics, with few glimpses of people before and after that.  Some great
footage of old bars routines, when the women would pause in between
difficult tricks.  Kind of like my routine now :).  Watch any gymn
competition on ABC and you'll see a commercial for it.)

I think she was trying to come back from another injury a few weeks
before the Moscow Olympics.  A coach (not her regular coach) was pushing
her to try a really hard skill (a Thomas?  Although I couldn't tell you
what a Thomas was :) and she was kind of scared, but she went for it
anyway, landed on her neck, and cracked her spine.

Someone (Beth?) posted an article about Mukhina a while back; maybe she
still has it and could repost it?  At any rate, it's in the
digests...somewhere :).

Subject: Juniors and Mukhina

I don't know about a junior international ranking, since there is not
a junior world championships, but there is the Japan meet, which has
fielded some pretty impressive gymnasts over the years. As for the US
juniors, I would assume their ranking would be based on the US Junior
Championships right now. So, this would be the ranking...

1)Mina Kim
2)Vanessa Atler
3)Alexis Brion
4)Kristen Stucky
5)Robin Phelps
6)Jamie Dantzscher
7)Breanne Rutherford
8)Kaitie Dyson
9)Jeanette Antolin
10)Rebecca Whitehurst

The complete nationals results are on the GYMN homepage.

BTW, Atler and Dantzscher were fourth and seventh, respectively at the
Japan junior competition.

And the Mukhina article on GYMN is probably somehwere around March or
April of 1995.
