Well, I guess like all the
others do, mainly through the media (TV
especially).
In Europe there are channels such as EuroSport
which
can be obtained by most of the continent but
one need to pay extra
for those (I think).
Apart
from TV, we rely on magazines. So the availability of gym is not
too great (if one is not personally involved with gym), I
guess that is
why there haven't been too many participation
from European Gymners,
also
the fact that there aren't too many of us around.
We can get NBC but
also at a higher cost. Also I believe the NBC we get
is
an amended version of NBC (with slots for UK news, etc.)
I would love
to hear more from the other non-Americans Gymners
too.
(Not that I'm implying I don't wanna
hear from American Gymners, but...
geez)

The Code is *far* from perfect. The fact that no 10s have been
given
doesn't mean the Code doesn't need
changes. IMHO, 10s have less to
do
with the Code than with the policy judges set
for themselves (perhaps the
more experienced
judges here can comment on this?).
Compare, for
example, the 89 Worlds with
the 91 and 92 Worlds and the 92 Olympics.
Same
Code, far fewer 10s after 89 (I suppose one could argue that
the quality of
the gymnastics went down). I don't have statistics on how many
gymnasts
have 10 SV, but with the exception of V,
my general impression has been
that there are
*plenty* of gymnasts starting from 10.
It seems to me
that they started out with a
potentially nice plan and then ruined it by
overrating
a bunch of relatively easy skills.
And in addition to
looking at how many
gymnasts start from 10, you also have to consider
whether
all the routines that do start from 10 all deserve to be worth
the same. IMO
the answer is *no*. Despite having
gotten rid of the most
egregious absurdities (rudi and full-twisting double layout both E's;
flyspring to layout front full
getting 0.2 bonus when flysprings were B's;
Popas and full-ins both D's -- I'm *so* sure), plenty
remain (I could
go on about what these are, but
you guys already know). In
response to a previous post on the subject, I haven't
noticed that this
Code is particularly better at ranking gymnasts either,
which IMO is
really what we're trying to do here
anyway. (While I'm at it,
in response to that same previous post, I doubt Mostepanova's 40 was a
"true"
40 (of course, I wasn't there and did anyone ever dig up a video
of it?), and in sheer numbers of 10s awarded (something like
25-30), the
women's competition at Olomouc was as
bad as or worse than any NCAA meet.)
Ramblin'
on,
:)
Adriana
Still think the whole concept of a 10 cap is an
archaic relic that has
outlived its usefulness
(assuming it ever had any)...

For you trivia buffs, I was judging a meet in
southern PA when I spotted
'89 World Champ, Aurelia Dobre
in the audience. Apparently she is
living
in MD.
She had a baby with her and looked great.

The results pretty much
speak for themselves. Obviously, Bhardwaj
dominated the
competition individually, finishing first AA Saturday
night
and sweeping all events but beam (fall on third layout
stepout) on Sunday. Despite her big scores, however, Brown's
was
edged out by the American Twisters (their
fifth team title here),
who were clean and steady
throughout the competition.
Illinois
Gymnastics A had a lot of depth and managed to stay within
a point
of the more well-known clubs.
Some
items worth mentioning:
*Katie Hornecker (IL
Gymnastics) displayed quite a bit of
difficulty in
her routines. She performed a solid
Garrison onto
the beam (RO full-twisting
back); unfortunately she fell on
the
"Miller". She was
also one of the few athletes to open with a
full-in
(also did a Rudi-punch front) on FX.
*Shannon Watt (Twisters) was a
model of consistency during the team
competition; she started off with a 9.825 on FX
(performed, among
other things, a perfect double-twisting
front), and didn't look
back on the other events,
to win the junior AA title.
*Breanne Rutherford (New England Express)
successfully completed
her backhandspring-tucked
full on beam (during finals).
Breanne
was the only one from her club to
make finals and did well, winning
two events.
*Cory
Fitzinger (Gymstrada) had a
great competition and proved to
be her team's MVP
(Alexis Brion, who was present, did not compete,
and Katie McFarland had problems during the team
competition),
finishing third AA among the juniors
and winning bars with a very
good set (did reverse
hechts in both directions and dismounted with
a double front).
*Kristen Groves (Maverick
Gymnastics), according to the announcer,
was the
first athlete from West Virginia in 17 years to make finals
at the Cup. The
last girl to do so was Mary Lou Retton.
*Also: the athlete from MarVaTeens
who tied Bhardwaj on bars during
team (9.875) was Helene Kenny (thanks Myra).
I have
yet to go through all of my notes and video, but if anyone
wants more detail later, just E-Mail me. I was supposed to go to
Gymnix this past weekend (Dory, Chris, I tried---the spirit
was
willing but the wallet was weak), but the Cup
was a lot of fun, and
it was definitely much
closer (45 minute drive)!

Man,
it's great to see Mohini at the top, and with such
excellent scores! She
is such a genuinely nice person and a fine gymnast. I, for one, would love to
see her on the Olympic team.

Who was the Japanese male gymnast who competed in
the Olympics
(probably Montreal) and shredded his
knee landing from rings?
I may have lots of the facts wrong--he may have
hurt it earlier
in the competition, I could even
be thinking of Munich,etc--but
I vividly remember
the TV coverage of his grimace upon landing.
Some of you must know what it
is I'm talking about--can anyone
put a name and
place on this vague memory?
Thanks.

Michigan vs. Georgia (W)

University of Michigan vs.
University of Georgia
I wish I could have made this meet, but my plane
from Ca. was late and I
missed it. We had a sellout crowd here at Michigan
and the competition
was close. We almost beat Georgia, but we were
happy to have done so
well after losing the week
before.
Team Totals:
Georgia 196.850
Michigan 196.425
*Note: Michigan recorded school records on bars
(49.2) and
floor (49.45)
Also
UM gymnasts Wendy Marshall (39.60), Lisa Simes
(39.40), and
Kathy Burke (38.90) recorded career bests in the AA.
I am sorry
to say I have limited results.
Maybe Kerry could get more
results from
Georgia's newspaper.
