"Gymnastics - The Art of Sport" which is a book with over 300
colour photos taken by the one and only Eileen Langsley in a
208 page publication, Both artistic and rhythmic gymnastics are

Nelli Kim's optional scores on floor exercises in 1980 were as follows:

The finals score was enough to win the gold medal in a tioe with Nadia

Subject: Kristie Philips

Fellow gymners,

One summer at a gymnastics camp I had the "luck" to have Kristie Philips as
my counselor. When I found out I was so excited, I couldn't believe it. S,
for two weeks I suffered through dealing with her. Reflecting back on the
whole thing, I have come to a couple of conclusions:

I read Joan Ryan's book, and I liked it. It may have been a little
overexagerated, but a lot of the things she had to say were true to a certain
degree, especially of Kristie. She definitely was messed up. This summer
was 1992, not much later than the end of her career. She kept food under her
bed, and ate a lot to be as thin as she was. Before I get all this hatemail,
I am not saying that she was bulemic, but she ate A LOT, and she was REALLY
thin. If any of us touched the food, just to move it, she yelled at us a
lot.

Late on night, my cabin was talking about, what else, gymnastics. She was
there, and someone asked about Bela. She got really tense, and wouldn't say
much. Just that she worked really hard there. Then someone asked her if he
was mean: she got this weird look on her face, and wouldn't answer.

Overall, she was very mean. She was defensive, and lorded her power as a
counselor over us.

Notes

Jim Koziol of Nebraska edged out Cal-Berkeley teammates Josh
Birckelbaw and Andrew Mason by .1 of a point for first place in Team
2000 19-and-over age category. Koziol's best events were rings (9.15,
first) and pommels (9.3, 2nd). The Cal guys started out the session
on rings, which was a somewhat low scoring event; as such, they did
not appear to contend for the medal positions until the 4th rotation
when Mason jumped to 2nd after some leading gymnasts faltered. After
the fifth rotation, Birckelbaw moved up to 4th (Mason 3rd), and then
his 9.4 (1st) pommels routine pushed him to 2nd overall. Aaron Cotter
and Tyler Vogt, both Iowa, started out the night in 1st and 2nd, and
remained in the top three through most of the meet, but a poor pbars
set dropped Vogt to 5th (7.85) and Cotter suffered mediocre scores on
rings and vault to drop to 4th.

The 18-and-under division saw some bright spots for the future of USA
men's gymnastics. Tim Elsner and Mike Canales (both OSU) led most of
the meet, although Elsner was in fifth place until his vault in the
third rotation lifted him to 2nd. Despite catching his heel on high
bar and touching down on his double layout on floor, he was able to
finish in 1st place. Todd Strada (Atlanta School) started the day in
14th, mostly because his first event was rings (low-scoring event, as
noted before). He improved his standing with each rotation however,
sitting in 6th by the 3rd rotation and inching on up to 2nd by the end
of the meet.

Highlights

It was really hard for me to catch the skills as I am not that
familiar with these guys. So, please accept apologies for any amazing
combinations that I missed. That disclaimer said, here is some cool
stuff that I did see:

Aaron Cotter: nice high bar set which included a hop full, hop full to
one arm

Guard Young: Yamawaki between crossed straps

Justin Delahunt: full-in mount on floor, double tuck dismount (pretty
impressive for a smaller guy)

San Juan Jones: great extended swing on high bar

Tyler Vogt: Tkatchev, Tkatchev, Gienger combination; triple tuck
dismount off high bar; front full, front full on floor for his first
pass

Todd Strada: handspring piked front vault that landed right on the
last bonus line (ie, it was really long!); nice lines, in general;
Arabian double front for second pass

Josh Birckelbaw: Tsuk double full, great form, stuck (perhaps a Kas
though -- not sure -- sorry!)

JM Michel: a very high double layout off high bar

Andrew Mason: Makuts on pbars (very nice routine overall)

Carey Reddick: double tuck, punch back on floor

Adrian Johnston: (rings) swing forward full twist, Yamawaki, Yamawaki,
swing backward full twist

Jason Gatson: full-twisting double layout off rings

Koziol: stalder full directly into Gienger, and German giants

Cal guys: nice form in general; always fun to watch their routines

Elsner: high difficulty on all events, such as floor where he uses a
double layout for his second pass

Canales: good strength on rings (8.9, 1st)

Subject: World Event Finals

WOW! We're not all the way through finals, but I wanted to say something
about Khorkina's bar routine. I didn't like it as much as the old routine...
until I saw it this time. It was almost as if she was savoring each move
that she was doing, taking the time to extend everything. It was wonderful.
Not too often you can say someone PERFORMED on bars...

Mo on beam was terrific too. It was if she was on the floor. I know that;s
thwe goal of any athlete on beam, but this was something else. It was
better than Yang Bo's on-beam (we'll forget the dismount for a minute)
performance in 1989. And she hit the double back off.

Gina Gogean caught my interest. I could actually hear the music this time.
Nicely done, probably the best I've seen her do. I liked the dance, and
the music now that we could hear (sound quality for the team finals was
bad).

One last comment: As good as Ji Liya's layout full=in was (Kathy, she
was not the first female to do this!!) I really thought Ludvine Furgon
hit a better routine. I liked the music better and I thought it was a
better interp, too. *shrug* I don't know, maybe there was a star value
problem or something....

Anyhow, as late as it was...finals was terrific.
