Mine too. It seems REALLY odd to me that she
could even think about competing after what she has said. I mean if
it's such a bad sport, why is she still doing it. In my opinion she
really doesn't have a right to be out there making money off of
something that she critisized.

Subject: Re: Magazine article

In March's 'Teen magazine, there is an article about eating disorders,
starting with a picture of Christy Henrich on beam.  The article is called
"Dying to Win".  It begins by profiling a gymnast (Erica Stokes).  It then
goes on to ice dancers and skaters. (There's a typical quote by Joan Ryan.)
The article isn't as stereotypical as it sounds, because it is there to
inform about eating disorders in general, not just in gymnasts.

I too, just saw the tail end of that commercial. I think she is being
profiled along with another Olympic hopeful. The show might have been
called The Road to Olympic Gold or something, and will be on next
weekend.  I didn't catch the whole name, so I will be doing some TV
Guide scowering as soon as the next issue arrives.

Subject: DALNET is better than EFFNET

Ok, needless to say, after spending 2 and a half hours trying to find a
server for our Sunday 2pm that would let me on, but not have me lagging
FIFTEEN minutes behind the conversation, I am not exactly in a good
mood.
I do, however, have some very good reasons why, beginning February 12,
we should meet on #gymnastics! (with the exclamation point) on Dalnet
rather than #gymnastics on Effnet.
Firstly, Dalnet is the smallest of the three nets, and therefore is not
as busy.  Lag time (the time it takes to get from one person's computer
to another person's computer) is MUCH better on Dalnet.  Lag on Effnet
is usually around 100 seconds, whereas you can usually receive messages
on Dalnet within 7 seconds.
Secondly, Dalnet is MUCH easier to get on, because it is not as busy,
and the servers are hardly ever filled to capacity.  You will not have
to try for a half hour to connect as Christopher Scott told me he had to
do today on Effnet.
Thirdly, #gymnastics! on Dalnet is a registered channel, so as long as I
auto-op some people (Rachele, Shers, Grace, Christopher) we will not
have the problem of not having an op which occurs every now and then on
Effnet.
Okay, this is my proposal, what do ya'll think about making #gymnastics!
on Dalnet the channel for our bi-weekly chats, rather than Effnet?
Rachele, please e-mail me and tell me what you think.  I am on
#gymnastics! on Dalnet almost everynight between 10pm and midnight EST.
It is already gaining popularity among non-Gymn gymnastics fans.
Please let me know what ya'll think.

Subject: Olympic Stats

My company has been promoting its business intelligence products on
the Web with special versions loaded with baseball stats for the
World Series and NFL stats for the Superbowl.  The football stuff
might even still be on there (http://www.cognos.com/).

I'm thinking that for the Olympics, we should put up some packages
for gymnastics viewers -- after all, it IS the most popular sport
at the Olympics, if anything.  But, does anyone have all the scores
for all the Olympic and World Championships for the last, say, 20-- 25 years?

Impromptu is a database report writer in which we should be able to
generate queries such as:
- how many 10.0's were scored in the 1976 Olympics?
- how many gymnasts qualified for all event finals?
- how many two-time Olympians did better in their second Olympics?
- ... y'know... like our GYMN trivia stuff...

PowerPlay is a multi-dimensional data analysis tool where you can
see in bar charts, pie charts, etc. and do drill-down analysis.
We should be able to look at things like:
- placements, scores by team (countries)
- scores by events
- scores by competition
- ...

If we can pull this off, the limited editions of these packages and the
databases will be available for free from the Cognos web site.

For further information, please contract me at Grace.Chiu@cognos.com.

Subject: Article: Gymnastics, FS Address Serious Issues

I have posted an article reprinted in the CAAWS (Canadian Association for
the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity) newsletter,
ACTION, Autumn 1995, entitled "Gymnastics, Figure Skating Address Serious
Issues".  It's about 5 pages long, so rather than post it here, please
visit   http://www.capitalnet.com/~chiug/issues.html.

Arising from Joan Ryan's book, this work is the result of a round table
discussion on what is being done to encourage good health of Canada's
female athletes with participants from Gymnastics Canada Gymnastique (CGF),
the Canadian Figure Skating Association, and CAAWS.  There is also a
description of the SNAC program (Sport Nutrition for the Athletes of
Canada).

This should be of worldwide interest to those who have read Ryan's book, &/or
those who are concerned with nutrition and eating disorders within our sports.
I encourage you all to read it.

Subject: NYTimes on Jennie Thompson

Today's NYTimes has a fairly long (two columns, including photo) article on
Jennie Thompson in today's edition; in my copy, it's at page 7 of section 8
(the Sports section).  The picture, taken at the American Classic, is of
Jennie in what appears to be a press to a handstand on beam; the article is
mostly about her recent string of injuries and coaching moves, and reports
that she is happily back in Oklahoma City with her mother, training with
Nunno (after a "fierce battle of wills" that Jennie won -- her parents
wanted her to quit because of her injuries; also her Mom moved back up to
Oklahoma, with some reluctance that was, I think unwisely, reported to the
New York Times).  Jennie has grown 6 inches in the past year (to a
gargantuan 4 ft 9!), and she's throwing a full-twisting somi on beam and
dismounting with a full-twisting double back (both of which she did before
the injury layoffs).  Much gossip about the traipsing between Nunno's and
Karolyi's, but basically both Jennie and her mother now say simply that
Jennie has a connection with Steve Nunno and just feels closer to the
coaches she'd been working with in Oklahoma. The reaction to being back at
Karolyi's, though, seems to have been slightly hysterical -- reportedly,
Jennie's mom came home from work to take Jennie to gymnastics, a few weeks
after their return to Houston, and found her in bed; the article says "`She
said she was never going back to the gym,' Samm Thompson said.  'She wanted
to go back to Dynamo.'"  Well, obviously she was pretty stressed, and she
was only, what, 13, so a little tantrum from time to time is not completely
unexpected -- and I hope she and her family talk no more of such things to
the press!  If there are bad family dynamics -- and the willingness to
disclose embarassing details of family battles over who should live where to
the press suggests that the dynamics are not ideal -- the public discussion
of them is bound to make things worse.

But the gymnastics sounds good!  I hope that they all come to terms with the
living situation.

stream athletes, coaches, and judges.
...
This year there is an additional invitational competition running

Nothing much worth reporting gymnastically.  The event was run
smoothly and efficiently.

Hi everyone!
My name is Nicole, and I'm 18 years old.  I live in Long
Island N.Y. where I am a full time student.  I have been taking
gymnastics since I was 8 yrs. old and I started competing level 8
at the age of 12 in high school.  Last year was my last year
competing and working out.  I just received my safety certification
from USAG and I hope to receive judging certification for level 5
compulsary.  Right now I am coaching a level 5 team, and I really
miss working out.  I joined this forum to keep in touch with life in
gymnastics.  It's so hard now a days to find people who are not only
interested but educated in the sport. My favorite gymnast is Amanda
Borden.  I haven't seen her at any of the latest meets.  Does anyone
know what happened to her?

Thanks,

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Consistency is the name of the game."

"He's not really flashy, but a real steady gymnast."

Sounds like John Roethlisberger?

Nope, it's Garry Denk.

...Who?

Garry Denk, former Iowa gymnast now training at the USOTC, stayed on the
apparatus when others didn't to place a surprising first in the optional
round of competition at the 1996 U.S. Winter Cup, securing an invitation to
represent the USA at the 1996 Individual Event World Championships in Puerto
Rico.  Denk, who was originally 5th after compulsories, pulled all the way
up to second overall (remarkable considering the 60/40 factoring) with a
proven formula: hitting all six routines.  The only gymnast of the night to
score in the 9's on every event, Denk remarked that he was "definitely
pleased to claim 2nd," despite playing it conservative with his routines on
every event. Denk's best event was rings, where he scored 9.3 for 5th place
(note: take into consideration that places 1-3 were occupied by rings
specialists). He has plans to add difficulty over the next month and hopes
to have his routines completely upgraded in time for this year's USA
Championships, having missed last year's Championships due to a torn
ligament in his wrist.

Stanford's Jair Lynch suffered a busted lip on high bar after his
perhaps-too-lofty piked Tkatchev release to score only 9.15 on this event,
far below his potential. Lynch remarked that the equipment was "a slow bar",
and as soon as he let go of the bar, he knew he would miss.  Obviously upset
with himself, Lynch remounted to throw his piked Tkatchev-Gienger
combination and his crowd-pleasing double layout with half twist (release
from front giants, immediate half twist, double back layout). After high
bar, Jair proceeded to claim first on floor by mounting and dismounting with
booming double layouts (9.6), but then faltered on pommels.  He remarked
that his mistake on pommel horse was "inexcusable" as he had successfully
competed that routine many times in competition.

What happened to John Macready?  In his words, "I choked a little." Well,
rings and high bar were fine; he scored 9.7 for first on high bar (he floats
his full-twisting double layout dismount, but seems capable of more
difficult releases [only a pair of consecutive Tkatchevs]). Rings brought
him a 9.4 for third, tied with Jeff Johnson, specialist, and beaten by Chris
Lamorte and Paul O'Neill, also specialists.  However, he broke on a back
toss on pbars, faced his front tumbling pass (ended with a front-1/2
layout), was short on his double layout floor dismount, and had major breaks
on pommels to place only 11th in the optional rankings.  With his high
compulsory score and the 60/40 factoring, Macready ended up in third,
(although with 50/50 factoring he would still be fourth).  When asked
afterward by a reporter if his confidence was damaged, John optimistically
replied "no, because I *know* I could have done well; I just need to train
the consistency."  Macready noted that he was trying some new skills in the
meet, such as the double layout dismount on floor, and he let that take his
concentration away from the skills that he normally does fairly easily.

Four-time national champ John Roethlisberger competed only three events both
in compulsories and optionals: pommels, rings, and vault.  Blaine Wilson,
the highest USA finisher at the '95 Worlds, sat out this entire competition.
Both are bypassing the Puerto Rico Worlds due to its poor timing with
respect to USA Championships, Olympic Trials, and the Olympics.

In general, the competition saw a great number of falls.  For the collegiate
guys, they are training to peak for Nationals in April, and for the other
guys, they seem to be intent on adding difficulty. While some routines were
obviously upgraded, I did not see any marked increase over what one might
already expect from one competition to the next.  However, the overriding
sentiment of the meet seemed to be that everyone wanted to improve over
Sabae, where the USA men had the compulsories to get into the top six, but
didn't have the difficulty to remain there.

Despite the discouraging number of falls, there were some bright spots:

Stibel (OSU) -- missed his first Gaylord II, but remounted and then caught
an excellent GII with full swing after the recatch.

Spencer Slaton (UCLA) and Macready both had decent (maybe even good) tour
jetes in their floor routines.  (I'm tired of watching the guys pretend to
hop one leg at a time over a 2 foot high fence -- yes, you can actually
continue lifting *after* the turn...)

Jason Katsampes (Parkettes) - came off pommels, but I just had to say that
he is so extended during his flairs that his torso is about 20-30 degrees
from horizontal.

Trent Dimas (USA Gymnastics World) -- only competed high bar -- missed his
first attempt, but on the second try successfully caught consecutive Kovacs.

Keith Wiley (Stanford) -- excellent vault landing (Kas full?); double layout
with full twist for his floor mount, and a full-in for his dismount

Drew Durbin (OSU) -- on rings, a half swing, consecutive Yamawaki's between
crossed straps, another half swing; full-twisting double layout dismount;
great double double layout off high bar

Richard Grace (Nebraska) -- same crossed strap sequence, with a double
double dismount; double double on floor, and a running double front, *and* a
full-in dismount with no hands.

Steve McCain (UCLA) -- stalder Tkatchev on high bar, one arm Gienger, and
full-twisting double layout dismount

Mihai Bagiu (Gold Cup) -- sweet recatch on the Kovacs

Jamie Ellis (Stanford) -- the best I've ever seen him do his full-twisting
Kovacs!  This one skill is possibly *the* highlight of the meet for me.  It
had the same sort of easy rolling motion as a half-in half-out tends to have.

Mike Morgan (OSU) -- stalder Tkatchev and full-twisting layout Jaeger on
high bar (too close on the Jaeger)

David St. Pierre (Broadway) -- handspring full twist into front tucked somi
vault

Steve McSparren (Penn State) -- double layout full-out mount and double
layout dismount on floor

Chris Lamorte vs Paul O'Neill -- the USA is fortunate enough to have two
world-class ringmen; this time, Lamorte was on top with a 9.85 to O'Neill's
9.7.  Lamorte's routine was phenomenal, with, among other amazing skills and
combinations, an inverted cross push to handstand.

Hello everybody!  I recently subscribed to Gymn.  My name is Cindy

"normal" person (highschool cheerleader, UCLA grad).  So, I haven't done much
gymnastics for 11 years (play around a little).  But got back involved as to
what's going on when I met Chris in '90.  Gymnastics and our baby is our life
. . . period.   Enough of intros . . .

Wanted to say great job Rachele on your meet coverage!  Liked the Reese's
commentary . . . you're right, what was I thinking, leaving w/ Scott instead
of Chris (Floor)!

Re: Julie's comments about Kristie Phillips at Reese's.  I think if she was
invited, why not try to win some money and show your face again.  What I
think was odd was that USAG invited her and Chelle Stack because of their
negative comments they have made towards the sport and USAG.  But, neither
party seemed to have a problem at the meet.

Sorry, if this was too long.
