Subject: IRC Information

First of all, please DO NOT email me and ask me any more IRC questions!
What follows is everything I know and so I have nothing more to tell.

Also, please do not post questions about IRC to Gymn. We are a gymnastics
list, not an IRC list. The reason for the following post is to provide very
basic information so that Gymners can start figuring out how to get to the
Monday night chats. This will be uploaded to the ftp/gopher site.

If you have IRC questions, turn to a friend that knows IRC, or if you are an
AOL, CI$, or other commercial subscriber, then try calling their help line.
(You paid them for their computer service, not us, so it's their JOB to
answer your questions!) At a university, you can call Computer Services or a
similar help desk.

The first is a bit from Dory, the second is some additional notes from me.

ME:
IRC is possible from any PPP account, CI$, AOL, Delphi, and the standard
university hookup. I have no info about Prodigy or other service providers.

Standard PPP account:
1. Check out Dory's WWW links above. Also, the link for the Yahoo search on
IRC is:

2. Select software for IRC. The links above should help you out. Stroud's
list of Windows Internet software is great; one of the URLs for this is:

There are many mirror pages for Stroud's list. I have heard good things
about WSIRC (which Dory mentions, above), mIRC, and Netscape Chat.

3. Follow directions with software.

AOL:
You need to get the AOL winsock TCP/IP stack. This will enable you to
establish a PPP connection. Then you can IRC. (You cannot IRC directly
from AOL; you must establish the PPP connection.) For more information
about this, use the keyword "WINSOCK". Once you have downloaded and
successfully installed that software, follow directions for Standard PPP
account.

Delphi:
You must have access to the Internet area, which is a $3/month fee. GO INT
to go to this Internet area, then type "IRC" and follow the prompts. You
will probably be prompted to change your length to 24 and width to 80
("/length 24" and "/width 80"). Answering these prompt cycles is strange
sometimes, as you find yourself having to start over by typing "IRC" a lot.
At any rate, once you've confirmed your nickname, etc, then you can start
IRC (again, by typing "IRC") and this will ask you for a server. I have not
had much luck with the Delphi server but you can use a different one (I've
had good luck with irc.virgina.edu). To join the gymnastics channel, type
"/join #gymnastics" and that should set you up.

Compuserve:
You must get connected through their TCP/IP stack. They've had lots of
promotional information about this, so figuring it out on CI$ should be no
biggie. Once you are able to establish a PPP hookup, then you can follow
directions for the Standard PPP account.

University:
You need to check which programs your university has and so forth -- this
info changes from uni to uni so I can't really make a generalization for all
of them. Universities, however, are usually crawling with techno-users, so
asking around a bit, at the Computer help desk if nowhere else, should get
you results.

got some good ones) and not yet gotten hotel rooms yet. Is there still
hope for a room? I read that you cant even get into a h.s. gymnasium to
sleep, they are already filled???? Anyone know what the situation is in

In a few weeks (JAN 18) I will be leading a panel discussion on
Violence in The Media. I need people to participate in a
survey, and, rather than spend 20 dollars photocopying,
I thought it would be easier to set it up through the Internet.

Subject: Olympic trip

As I mentionned several weeks ago, I received confirmation of my
tickets for Atlanta. My frined, who isn't going to gymnastics (rowing)
and I haven't booked any place to stay yet, but we would like to camp -
ie just find a place to pitch a tent.
Has anyone else from gymn-l going to Atlanta made any travel
plans yet? Is anyone else going camping, and do they know of any good
places to do it?
I was also wondering if anyone will be renting a house down there
during the Games, and if so, would you be willing to let two people
(myself a 21 year old male, my female friend will be 22) stay there too?
We won't take up much space, and we will be willing to crash on the floor
in our sleeping bags.
Better yet even, are there any Atlanta natives on the list who
would let us stay with them, or even pitch a tent in your back yard?
Any help will be appreciated, and I hope this message, which has
no real gymnastics news in it, didn't annoy anyone! Thank you.

I'm writing just in case if anyone wanted to know about gailkuchara.
She trains at a gym my cousin works at (capital). Gail just had surgery
on her elbow for a disease in it(cant remember the name). She cant put
any weight on it at all, and they just started have her hangin from a bar
to straighten it out. She is in the gym but just doing leaps and jumps
on floor and beam. And she is doing whip,whip double tuck on the tumble
trak(from a standing bounce) Thats all i know for now!! Bye

AOLnet is a scam for those users who are not in the U.S., like Canada.
I used AOLnet while it was in beta and it was free. Now they sent all
Canadian subscribers a ridiculous letter saying that there would be a
surcharge, something to the effect of US$2/hr to use AOLnet. I don't
use AOL unless I have to. There's no benefit to using it for Internet
access from here. It's deliberately slow to extend connect time charges.
I noticed ten-fold faster throughput when I signed on with CapitalNet.

Subject: Guys who like gymnastics

Hi everyone.
I have been thinking about posting this for a long time, and I
would very much appreciate the input of everyone out there (male or
female) who has an opinion on it.
I am 21 years old, and have been closely and faithfully following
the sport since I started to receive IG ten years ago. My actual
gymnastics "career" wasn't really one at all; I did recreational gym for
about three years, but never really progressed very far. However, I have
loved the sport and followed it since.
Nobody I know - even my parents - understand my enthusiasm (some
would say obsession - I wouldn't) for the sport, and I have had my fair
share of teasing about it, although the people I know now are mature
enough not to bother with that.
Since I've had my driver's liscence, it's allowed me to go to
gymnastics meets fairly regularly. I never really thought about it
before, but now that I am older than virtually all of the world class
women's competitors (it's mostly women's meets I go to), I wonder how
people (coaches, athletes, parents) perceive me when I go to a meet. I
don't have any friends who like the sport, so I always go to meets
alone. I don't personally know any of the coaches or athletes really either.
Some of my friends "joke" with me that I go to these meets so I
can look at little girls running around in leotards. I know they are
joking, but I wonder if there really are men out there who go to meets
for that reason? I'm certainly not one of them, and I think somebody
like that is sick. I've been wondering a lot lately if that's how people
at meets perceive me. I try to sit near a group of people (usually
parents froma particular club) and contribute to the conversation. That
way they will know that I am knowlegeable about the sport, just like the
guys you hear spouting out stats at every turn at every major league
baseball game. Believe me, I know my gymnastics!
I just really enjoy watching and following the sport. I love the
beauty and the daringness of it. I admire how the athletes dedicate
their lives for the purpose of acheiving such excellence. Just because
the "women" who participate at the highest levels of gymnastics are
young, and increasingly younger than myself, doesn't mean that my love
for the sport is any different from anyone else's love for any other
sport. I don't think there is anything wrong with a guy liking
gymnastics, if you like it for the right reasons.
I would appreciate any input or feelings that you people have
about this. Have any of you guys out there ever felt the same or had the
same worries? Should I just lighten up, or should I be concerned about
how the gym community might perceive someone like me? Presently, I am
trying to contact some coaches, so that maybe we could become friends to
the point where the people in the gymn community will know who I am and
accept me.
As I said, I would appreciate anyone's input, particularly guys
who like gym, especially women's gym, and those who weren't "real" (ie
competitive) gymansts themselves. Of course, women can feel free to give
their opinions as well. Has anything like this ever come up on gymn?
I have another question, which is kind of off topic. I have an
extensive video library of meets I've taped since 1986 - virtually every
meet that has aired on TV here since then, approximately 25 full hour
tapes. My parents don't understand why I tape it all the time. I've
tried to compare it to music. Many people have large CD collections, and
a different album may suit them to listen to at a certain time. That's
how I feel about my gym tapes, but my mom still doesn't get it. How many
of you out there have extensive libraries? My mom is convinced that
there can't possibly be anyone out there with one like mine, and I'd be
happy to prove her wrong!

take time to respond, and I am anxiously awaiting any resopnses/opinions
you have on this topic. Thanks.

I'm kinda curious what everyone else is starting to think, so I'm going to
throw out my opinions and see whether I get any discussion going. The
following are only rough outlines, so feel free to disagree, or whatever. :)

Only the women, sorry for you men's fans. I don't even want to venture a
guess in that arena. :)

Women's Team

1)USA
2)ROM
3)CHN

I think, with combination of Miller, Moceanu and Dawes, plus veterans
Strug and Borden, and youth like Jaycie Phelps and Kristy Powell and Amy
Chow around, plus the home field enthusiasm, I think the US could very
well pull off the win. Romania, with the consistency they have, will keep
it very tight and could very well pass the Americans, and I think China
will round out the medalists. Russia will most like be fourth, I think.
Talented and artistics, I think the Russians will be off the podium due
to inconsistency.

All-Around

1)Dominique Dawes
2)Svetlana Khorkina
3)Lilia Podkopayeva

This could be the best all-around competition of recent memory. Shannon
Miller, I think will lead the Americans in the team competition, but like
Svetlana Boginskaya four years earlier, will find herself out of the
running in the all-around. Also challenging will Dominique Moceanu
(especially if her form keeps improving), Lavinia Milosovici and
Alexandra Marinescu. Mo Huilan, I think, will fall victim to nerves, but
if she doesn't, watch out for a Chinese gold medal.

As for the event finals, those are too up in the air for any predictions.
I think you will see an American medalist on every event, though, and I
think people like Podkopayeva, Miller and Khorkina could very well make
every event final.

Anyhow, feel free to argue. I'm really curious whatcha all are thinking.
Atlanta sure looks to be a terrific competition.

i think that the us could definatly pull out the gold if they actually
act as a team!!! they will be lead by miller and moceanu. i feal the
team will be:
1 miller
2 moceanu
3 dawes
4 strugg
5 zmeskal- if she she qualifies she will steal the show
6 borden, chow, jenny thompson, oror maybe teft or bohardwaj.
but we cant forget about the others out there like kristy powell etc.
the us has so many great gymnasts that the last 2-3 spots are going to be
hard to predict.
aa
this wil be the toughest aa battle ever i think miller could pull it
off if she stays healthy. mighty mo or svetlana khorkina aor lilia or
even marinesku. Cant forget about moceanu(she might steal the show) and
if kim zmeskal does make the team sho could be up inthe runnign also(hard
to say since i havent seen her compete. i think milo will faulter under
pressure(god lover she tryes so hard) i know miller will win a gold on
beam. im not sure about the rest of the events yet...Donny

Well, I haven't made any firm predictions yet, but I have this to say
about the Russian women's team. After costly errors at Sabae and
Dortmund, I am postitive that they will be much better prepared in
Atlanta, as they won't want a repeat of Sabae for sure. Plus, Galieva on
the team will only give them even more depth than they already have, and
I know that she'll want to be at her absolute best in team competition,
in order to ensure herself a spot in the AA final that was taken away
from her in 1992.
If all teams hit, I think it should be 1. Russia, 2. China 3. Romania,
but if things go the way they usually do, and have lately, it will
probably be USA or Romania in first, China third. I'm not willing to
etch that in stone though!
I think it would be neat if we had kind of an official gymn
contest where people submitted their predictions. We could take points
where 1 point for each athlete predicted to win a medal who actually won
a medal, and 3 points if they won the same colour medal predicted. (ie
if you predicted Khorkina to get gold in AA but she gets silver, you'd
get one point, but no points if you predict her to win an AA medal but
she only gets a medal on UB or something like that - does that make sense?)
When I said unofficial, I just meant that there would be no
prizes, and someone would just add up the points for fun to see who the
winner is. Of course we'd have to have a point tallier...I'm not even
sure this would work, or if there'd be enough interest. We'll see....

It is WAY TOO EARLY TO make these predictions. People thought that Romania
would have walked away with Seoul since they did so well in Rotterdam '87 and
had the current Euro and World Champ. Things happened. I think you
couldn't even make a guess without dispair until a few weeks ahead of the game.

Plus, the Americans (at least) that you meantioned might not make the team.
Anyone remember Sabrina Mar, Kristie Philips Doe Yamishiro (sp?). Things
happen.

Okay folks, so I know I promised results of the Aloha Gymfest. The
meet supposedly ended Sunday 12/31. I have been faithfully scanning
the newspaper for results but nothing till today.

The January 4 issue of the Honolulu Star Bulletin reports:

All Around:

1. Risa Sugawara Japan 37.475
2. Sarah Harding (Hawaii Gymnastics Academy) 37.175
3. Tacia LaBatte (King Intermediate School, Hawaii) 36.725

Local girl Sarah Harding is a senior at Punahou School and will be
attending Stanford next year. (No word if on a gymnastic
scholarship)

I know it looks pitiful but out of desperation I contacted Kokokahi
Gymnastics(host club of the meet) and they promised to fax me full
results hopefully by tomorrow.

Funny that the paper waited until Thursday to post this tidbit of
news. If you ask me, its "stale".

Subject: San Francisco RSG Intl Invite

For RSG fans

The San Francisco RSG International will be held on February24-25 at
the Kezar Pavillion, Golden Gate Park (Stanyan/Waller Street).
Tickets will be $5 for both days. Competition on February 24 will be
Levels 8-10 and junior elite (10am to 8pm!!!) while competition on
February 25 will be seniors (10am to 6pm). Competition involves the
individual and group disciplines.

According to Svetlana Scherba, the following are expected to send
teams:

USA: Los Angeles, CA; Colorado, Washington state, Hawaii and Texas
Belarus!!!!(including World Champions Larissa Lukyanenko, Tatiana
Ogrizko, Eugenia Pavlina)

Russia, Czech Republic, Japan, Korea, Austria, and Germany

If you plan to be in the San Francisco area for the meet like yours
truly, the host hotel is the Cathedral Hill Hotel 1101 Van Ness Ave.
