When do optionals start, and when will the US teams be competing,
since'
they will each be in the final round of optionals? I can't make heads or

of the schedule on the Sabai homepage.

Re: GYMN-L Digest - 4 Oct 1995
Hi! I've been lurking for a couple of weeks
now and I have finally decided to
delurk. I am a nineteen year old freshman at
Carleton College and found out
about gymn while surfing the net one day. I did recreational rhythmic
gymnastics
for three years when I was younger (in Montreal, Canada),
but besides that I've
just been hooked on women's
gymnastics just like every other little girl who
watched
Mary-Lou in '84. I have one
question to ask. I have been
hearing
rumors
about Kim Zmeskal attempting a
comeback. There was even a feature
during the
network coverage of Nationals that
mentioned Bella is now couching only Moceanu
and Zmeskal. Is she indeed attempting a comeback, or
was that just a dream that
has already
passed? Also what has she been up
to since the '92 olympics
and the
present? Thanks a lot, Meg

Re[2]: Help--7-6-5 Rule??
Meg,
I might be wrong but I
think that the difference to the way it used to
be
is that the six that competed in each event had to be the same six.
This implied that they
were all going for the AA. With the 7-6-5 rule,
any
six of the team of seven can compete and help toward the Team
competition.
>
Can someone please tell me what the 7-6-5 rule
is?
The 7-6-5 rule means that a team can have 7 competitors. 6 compete on
each
event, and the top 5 scores for each event are counted towards the
team total. This
is new since the Barcelona Olympics.

USOC names Moceanu September Athlete of the
Month
Dominique Moceanu has been named
Athlete of the Month for September by
the
USOC. She also was athlete of the
month in April.
Also named Athlete of the Month for September was Mark
Reynolds, a
sailing skipper. Reynolds is the first of U.S. Sailing to
be USOC
Athlete of the Month; he won the Star World Championships in
Spain,
sailing with crew Hal Haenel.

The schedule on
the Sabae pages are in military time. If the hour is
greater
than 12, then you simply subtract twelve and tack on a "PM" to
convert it to time that you are more familiar with.
Of
course, since you are in Wisconsin, you then have to subtract 15
hours (14 hrs EDT) to get your
local time.
That said, here's the
conversion. I've astericked the final rounds
(when
the USA team will compete):

Gymnastics
Thanks for the information. I can't wait for this competition to be
over
so that I can read all of the personal
opinions. I would love to hear
form people that are not from the United States and their
opinions also.
USA Today said that the American men could win a medal. Is it possible
for
them not to win a medal at all? I mean could there be major upsets
from people who are in 12th or 8th place. Meaning is it possible for
people to mess up so badly that others could move up? Is
there anybody
form the "soviet bloc "
out there. I would like to see more
people talk
about gymnastics. Even if it is not "American
gymnastics"
I would like
to hear what you have
to say about gymnastics in your own country. What
about
Australia and Canada or gymnastics in Asia. I would like to hear
what you have to say.
You can e-mail me. It does
not have to do
America, what is going out there. Oh yeah, I get IG from the
bookstore.
Why does it take so long. I am tired of not getting magazines. Where
can I
get other magazines. I deleted some
of the posts. I need my fix
right now. I am addicted. (To reading and the Olympics of course)
BYE.

"I think that we have
been robbed! We have been flagrantly underscored. The evidence is that
Hungary is
placed ahead of us on our speciality. In a face-to-face
battle,
we always beat them by a wide margin!
Teza received 9.45 and I
don't understand why.
Only on her dismount was she a little unsteady, but
otherwise her routine was amazing! If she had been a member of the
Romanian
team, she would have scored 9.65, for sure!"

Worlds news on AOL
For those of you with AOL...
Usually, it's
pretty hard to find gymnastics news on AOL. Sometimes the San
Jose Mercury
Center or the Chicago Tribune Online has something. But it isn't
often. Yesterday, I was trying every possible place to find
something. The
Grandstand is a sports section of AOL. It has a news area. Keyword : Sports
News, but it rarely has anything on
gymnastics. However, yesterday it had
about 8
articles on the worlds. If you have AOL and want to see some of the
articles, go to that area. Then click on the More Categories
icon. Go to
More sports. Scroll down a bit and you'll see gymnastics. There
is very
little there that Rachel isn't already
giving the list.serv. (Thank you!),
but it's nice to find something.
It did have this
the other day:
Arkaev said his team were determined to improve their
position. ``I think most
of our gymnasts will perform more
difficult skills
in the optionals.''
Belarus coach Vladimir Vatkini said Ivankov had been hindered by a shoulder
injury
he suffered two weeks ago while they had also been missing their
number three Alexander Syostak who
broke his left arm last Saturday.
Alexei Nemov
fell in the horizontal bar to finish with a lowly
51.800.

Well, upon actually looking at the pages versus reading
them on Lynx,
it shows Fedorchenko
using a triple twisting double layout DISMOUNT
off
high bar. My original post was
misleading. But nonethelss,
that

rounds. It

Effective Posting
------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: This is intended to be satirical
and a take-off of the popular
"Emily PostNews"
UseNet article. Please realize that
it often highlights
what *NOT* to do on Gymn, and is
intended to be educational, yet fun.
"Dear Gymn Guru"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This
is a special edition "Dear Gymn Guru" which
addresses the issue of
avoiding common posting
pitfalls. With the proper exercise
and training,
you too can become an accomplished,
effective poster like Gymn Guru!
Q: Dear Gymn
Guru, what makes an effective post for Gymn?
A: Glad you asked that question,
full-twisting grasshopper. The Gymn
administration tells me
that an effective post is one with high
gymnastics
content (aka signal), with little fluff (noise).
Q: What's wrong with fluff, oh Gymn Guru?
A:
Fluff is great in cotton candy and other snack favorites that we
won't mention here.
But on an email-based forum, especially one
that's
grown to the impressive size of Gymn, fluff can
really gum up
the works, filling everyone's
mailbox with bad nutrition: A poor
diet
for gymnasts and gymnastic enthusiasts!
Q: Er, I'm still
not sure I understand this fluff thing, Gymn
Guru.
Can you elaborate?
A:
Yes, my curious arabesque neophyte. Think of fluff as a post that
is:
1)
Superfluous
2)
Cryptic, random, nebulous, or
2)
Non-pertinent to gymnastics
Q:
Can you give any examples, Gymn Guru?
A: Well Gymn
Guru, of course, has never written a fluff piece, so it
is
difficult for Gymn Guru to come up with real-life
examples...
1)
Could involve including a very long message, then writing at the
bottom,
"That's really funny!" or "I agree!"
2) Might be exemplified by a short
post with a body that says
"yaba yaba hey!", for example.
3) could
be a post that's really about U.S. Major League Baseball...
Q: Hey, that reminds me, Gymn Guru.
What's the deal with the Cleveland
Indians? Are they hot or what?
A: Gymn Guru
picks them to go all the way...
Q: Dear Gymn
Guru, I think I saw Shannon Miller on the bus this morning.
Think I should
post it to Gymn?
A: Really? She's supposed to be in Japan. *Sure*, post away!
Q: Well, maybe it wasn't Shannon
Miller. But she kind of looked
like
her.
Also, this girl in my chemistry class looks kind of like her,
expecially the hair... Think there are many people that look
like
Shannon Miller but really aren't?
A: Hmm, you stumped Gymn
Guru on that one. But you've got a
whole
forum of enthusiasts at your beck and
call. Why don't you post the
question?
Q; Dear Gymn
Guru. What kind of clothes do you
think gymnasts wear
when they go to the movies at
night? What about Shannon Miller? Think
she
goes to the movies a lot?
A:
Wow, those are tough ones!
You've stumped Gymn Guru a second
time... Why don't you post the question to Gymn?
Q:
Cotton candy. Ha ha ha! Gymn Guru,
that was so funny!
A: Now,
you've gone and made Gymn Guru hungry!
Yours
in Gymnastics,

Hi
My name is Helder,
I'm originally from Portugal but I'm currently
studying
at Iowa State University in the U.S.
I've been in gymnastics for
about 18 years
and although I'm "retired" from the sport now, I still follow
all the major competitions and news.
I just found out
about this forum through the WWW and immediately decided to
join.
I look forward for all the discussions and
exchange of points of view among
many other things
that go on in this forum.

Maura, thanks!!! You are right,
you can see it quite clearly! It
is totally
awesome! I wish we could see it at worlds, but I think
she's
the pulled athlete on bars, at least judging by comps. The
routine is great, or at least the yaegar-half
is.
Speaking of bars routines, I finally got see Chow's on the ESPN

WOW! Talk about holding nothing back. She might not have the

bars are world class. We're talking
world or Olympic finals class.

*sigh* I'm a little peeved right now, so I'm posting this to
get some
to get a little honest feedback, please,
no flaming.
Over the course of 12 hours, I have gotten two pieces of
hate mail
regarding my posting here. The first was
one line, the second was
about as crude as what I
received regarding my Olympic Preview a few
weeks
back, only sent to my private email.
I was under the impression that
this forum was for the discussion of
gymnastics,
and debate. I am opinionted, I'm sorry. It comes
with
the job I do. But there is no reason for hate
mail, especially in regards
to opinions that I
think are shared by most of this group (IE Maura
Driscoll's
announcing).
I would appreciate it, if you think I'm being nasty
(which I think I
avoid) please tell me nice and
make a suggestion, don't flame me). I
am hoping
that, oh, I dunno, maybe someone can explain if this
is normal
for this place? Because
mostly I have had no trouble posting here.
