Non Televised Routines(WAG)
For those of you
who might be interested I took some notes on routines that
were not televised during the Olympic Trials in Boston.
Both
Amy Chow and Mohini Bahrwaj
performed Yurchenco double fulls
on vault.
Actually this was Mohini's second
vault, her first being a Yurchencko with a
1 1/2.Amy scored
a 9.8 and Mohini scored a 9.812.
Katy Teft's bar routine consisted of uprise
to handstand (D) to Giant (B) to
Giant hop in(E),
Giant hop in(E) to Geinger (D) for an E+E+D
combination (.4
in Special connection bonus). She also performed a cast to handstand
1/2 to
a Giant full that looked to be in (I did
not have a good angle) (D) to an
immediate Tkachev (D) to a straddle back to handstand (C). If the handstand
1/2 was in, this would also have been .4 in special connection
bonus! Her
dismount
was a double layout. Remember for
scoring purpose only .3 in
special combination
bonus count. Score - 9.825
Mohini's bar
routine contained uprise to handstand (D) to Giant
full (C) to
an immediate Geinger
(D) to long hang kip to cast to handstand half turn in
(C) to a forward swing straddle back to handstand (D) She also performed a
double layout with a full twist.(Again, from my angle which
was right in
front of the bar it was almost
impossible to tell wether or not the handstand
turns were within 10 degress of
vertical to count as
"in") Score - 9.75
Larissa Fontaine's bar routine consisted
of uprise to handstand (D) to a
Tkachev(D)
to an immediate Geinger (D).( D+D+D combination of .4
in special
connection bonus) After her kip cast
handstand she performed a Hindorff(E) to
an immediate underswing 1/2 turn
to catch the low bar in handstand (D). (E+D
for .2
in special connection bonus) She then performed her signature Fontaine
dismount (D) Score - 9.737
Mohini
's floor routine consisted of a double layout (E), front full (D)
immediate layout (C) After her dance series she then
performed a 2 1/2.
Unfortuately she fell on her last pass
which looked like it was suppose to
be a
triple.
Larissa's routine consisted of a double arabian (E).
Front full(D) immediate
front
pike(B). and a punch front(A) through to a front
full(D). Score - 9.625
Larissa Fontaine has trained in our state
for the past two years. Her
determination, dedication to the sport and team spirit have
been an
inspiration not only to her teammates at
Hill's Gymnastics but to the
Maryland gymnastics
community as well. We wish
her good luck at Stanford
University.
I am also off to Atlanta
where I along with Robin Ruegg will be a Master
Scorer.
Let me take this opportunity to wish all the participating countries
on our Gymn-List good luck at the
Olympics!!

Beam compulsories at Trials
Hello,
At the women's
compulsories I noticed that during balance beam some women
mounted from one end of the beam and others from the
opposite end. Since it is
a compulsory routine I thought they would all start in the
same place. Is there
any particular reason for
this? Is it simply a matter of left-handed vs
right-handed?
The same thing happened on pommel
horse for men.

ESPN.
ESPN had a program on last night which higlighted
all the trials.
I caught some greco-roman
wrestling and a little gym. The host was the same
person
as the host of WWoS. It was an ABC show. Kathy
Johnson-Clark did the
commentary for gym (where is
Bart?). Onlything new was the fact that they
said that Shannon Mil
Ller is
now doing full Bar and vault routines and Dom's fracture is healing.
They
said something about new xrays show it to be healing
fast. Also, the
average age of the US olympic WAG team is 17.4 years. I am sure that
Moceanu is squewing the data!
Opps. I mean 'skewing' above.

Wow!
How long have you been a fan??
Three incidents come to mind
over the years:
- Maxi Gnauck got a 2.5? for optional floor at 81 Worlds. She clutched her
ankles
after an attempted double back on the first pass. I'm not sure if
she
sprained it or what, but this was the reason was she didn't compete AA
that year.
- Elena Gurova
got a 6.?? at 84 Champions All (a competition at Wembley,
anyway). She hit her elbow on the high bar after
a botched Tkatchev, and
tried
to continue, but was in too much pain.
- Yulia
Yurkina couldn't finish her FX at 93 Nikon
International in Sydney
after dislocating her
elbow attempting an Arabian double front.
And it was
nice to see it in slow motion
from 3 different angles (sarcasm).
Simone
A
few of these do sound kind of serious.
The dislocated elbow and somebody
else
hitting their elbow but being in to much pain to continue.

Re: Training Hours Per Week
What do people think about the idea of
limiting the number of hours per week
a child
could train when under the age of 16? I am starting to question
parents who sent their kids to train 30-40 hrs a week in preperation for
a
chance to make the Olympics. I think
that by spending so much time training they become great
gymnasts but loose
out on social skills and other
social relationships that are important to
ones up
bringing.
This sounds pretty good to me. I know of one girl
who walked into our gym,
looked at our level 9
girls working out, and said "they expect me to do that".
Not for a long time, but she got so
discouraged, by these girls who worked
out 4 hours
a day for years, and looked no bigger than her. Also, at the end
of
seventh grade I had to quit gymnastics.
When I did I realized that I
didn't know
anyone at all. I am now a junior in
high school and find it very
hard to talk to other
people and share things. And, yes
I've started back to
gymnastics!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (just last
summer, I'm still excited)

Sports Illustrated
The July 8th issue of Sports Ilustrated
has an interesting article about
trials. There are color pictures of Dawes on
bars, Chow hitting her head on
beam (ouch!) and Moceanu and Miller together. The article quoted Theresa
Kulikowski (who really impressed my daughter and I at
trials), Amanda Borden
and others. I also enjoyed reading about Chainey Umphrey. I was not aware
he
had been having problems with vertigo and had actually dislocated a finger
during optionals! He has been a long time favorite since
my daughter met him
at camp two years ago. He signed autographs and visited with
the campers and
was very personable. Sports Ilustrated
doesn't usually provide much
gymnastics coverage
but hopefully will give us more Olympic coverage. They
always
do get top notch photographs.

Classicsports Channel
I'm sure not everyone
has access to this USA cable channel, but those who do
might
want to go to their home page:
http:\\www.classicsports.com
you can tell them what you would like to see on the
channel -- maybe if a
lot of us write we can persuade them to show some
gymnastics.

Who will compete on each event
Hi,
there's
been a lot of talk about who will compete on bars, and how Dominique
M. doesn't belong there.
True or not true, I'm willing to bet that a
reasonably
healthy Moceanu will compete all events. With that in mind,
here's who i think they should
leave off.
Vault - Borden
Bars - Strug
Beam
- Chow
Floor - Chow
But they'll probably leave Amanda off bars instead
of Kerri. And, is it true
that they've almost all made bars finals at worlds? Let's see...Shannon-yep,
Dominique D.-yep, Jaycie-yep, Kerri-oh, yeah
in 92, yep, Amy Chow hasn't.
Has Amanda Borden??
Someone said that
Amanda would not watch Jaycie's ruitines
but would look at
her scores at nationals. Is there a little rivalry going on, or
is Amanda
just trying to focus yet know what Jaycie's upto at the same
time?
Any word on Dominique M.'s injury?
Any
replies are more than welcome!

This is going to be a tough decision. What about Phelps? I really want
to see Kerri Strug in the AA. I was really impressed with the
improvement
she has made in all of her routines
since Nationals, especially on her
landings.
Does
everybody have the same chance to make event finals? I think that
the 3 gymnasts per country rule is really dumb. All of the top gymnasts
should have a shot at the all-around, regardless of where
they're from.
The US, as well as some of the other countries, have more
than 3 who
could place well in the AA. It's too bad they make the rules that
way.
Maybe they should have a system where each country sends one
gymnast and the rest of the positions are filled by the
girls that earn
them.
