This is not precisely true. If there is no
D-element performed and there is
no extra C-element
that can partially compensate for it, the starting
value
is an 8.4. Also the 1.0 bouns point
can be earned by D (0.1 each) or E
(0.2 each) or direct connections
of C+D, D+D, or C+E (0.1) or E+E or D+E
(0.2).

PH-
B-value one pommel element with at least 3 hand placements
B-value part on each end of the horse

B-value strength handstand
B-value static strength move
PB- B-value move through

HB- B-value dorsal grip
move
B-value inbar element
B-value release move showing flight.

Re: GYMN-L Digest - 4 May 1996 to 5 May 1996
Re: ncaa coverage
I watched yesterday with a full-hour
smile! The crowd was absolutely
fab,
along with the exuberance of the
gymnasts! I much prefered this arena for
the
competition of gymnastics to the sometimes solemn atmosphere found at
USAG & elite competitions. The NCAA, the participating schools,
and
especially the fans and athletes should be
commended for portraying
gymnastics at the real
sport it is--not just another display or performance
to
simply watch and applaud.
By the way, where was the ACC?

Re: 1996 US Olympic Team
My list would be the same for the most
part: Dominique Dawes, Shannon
Miller,
Dominique Moceanu, Kerri Strug,
Jaycie Phelps, Amanda Bordon,
Kristy
Powell. I think this would probably
be the strongest one we could
field but I am also
expecting some surprises. All of
these gymnasts
(except maybe Phelps??) have been plagued by injuries in the last year or
two. Other
contenders for the team: Jennie
Thompson, Amy Chow, Mary
Beth Arnold, Theresa Kulikowski, Mohini Bhardwaj(sp?),. . . Who am I
forgetting?
While
I'm here I might as well do the re-intro.
My name is Melissa
and I'm finishing up my
freshman year at George Washington U. in
Washington, DC. I am originally from the Philadelphia
area where I did
competitive gymnastics for about
7 years. I was a Level 7 when I
quit
and I was a cheerleader for a couple of years
in high school. I'm hoping
to try out at GW in the fall. Anyway, back to gymnastics, I have
also
coached and done summer camps but more than
anything else I a just a huge
fan and I follow the
sport as closely as possible. I
will be in Atlanta
this summer--I have tickets for
every team session plus the all-around
finals, men
and women!!:) My all-time favorite
gymnast is Kim Zmeskal
because
she knows what it means to be a true "winner". I love this list
and
being able to discuss my favorite sport with people who are as
passionate about it as I am!

Hi!
I was wondering about the
rule about indaviduals being sent to the
Olympics
from countries that didn't qualify in the
top 12 in Sabae. How many countries
send ind.? How many ind. get to go from those countries? Thanks for your

Hi:
I was just asked by 3 gymnasts here in Phila. if I know of anyone who has
3
tickets they are not using for Saturday night optionals for the men's
trials. They will be training/working
during the week and can't make the
compulsories,
but do want to go up for the optionals. So, if anyone has
tickets
that they want to sell please contact me

The FCC
NEVER issues computer virus warnings.
CERT at Lawrence Livermore Natnl Labs llnl.gov or the internic

If a
virus warning claims to be from FCC then you KNOW its
a hoax.
One last thing, any virus that is not machine
& operating system specific
is also a
hoax. You cant
make a virus that will nail all computers, it wont
work. A virus wont nail Sun3 & mac &
pc &ps2 & sunsparc & HP.......
You just cant nail that
many machines with one piece of code.
So when you see these warnings,
remember what I said here,
and laugh at the fakes
and preserver the bandwidth of this list, OK ?

Women's gymnastics--questions on rules, NCAA's
1) Question was about landings with
the feet apart and is there a deduction
can the
judges detect this when they sit on the side of the horse?
>
The
general deduction for leg separations is up to .15 for optional
competitions. A
.15 deduction is the MAXIMUM, so would be a severe
separation
of the legs. Slight separation
would be .05. Yes, it would be
hard for the judges to see the legs apart, and if they
couldn't see it,
they wouldn't deduct it.
2) Question 2
was whether an Illusion full turn fulfilled the full turn
requirement on beam.
Yes, and it is an "E" skill. (This was a USGF
interpretation
and would be used at the NCAA level, I don't know what they
do internationally.

Provincial Championship Highlights (long)
This
weekend in Mississauga, the women's artistic provincial
championships
took place. I don't have full
results, but I will post
some competition
highlights as I remember them.
In
the senior high performance category, there were several
Olympic hopefulls in the field hoping to use this meet as a tune-up
for
the Olympic trials. This created some confusion in the
scoring as four
gymnasts performed compulsories on
the first day, but they were judged
according to
optional rules (comp 1b I believe), so the SV for UB was
only
9.4 (which I assume means they didn't get full credit for certain
skills, ie the straddle back HS
from a slip grip, which would be a D if
done from
a handstand on the highbar, no?), FX started from 8.1
and BB
from 7.something. Overall, Lena Degteva
of Mississauga probably had the
best looking
compulsories. Yvonne Tousek looked a bit tired and wasn't
too
sharp (apparently she trained four hours at her gym the same day of
the competition!).
Theresa Wolf was her usually consistent self, while
her clubmate Shanyn
MacEachern appeared quite shaky here, especially
on
BB where her lack of back flexibility appeared quite
evident. Guest
competitor Marleen Lavoie from Ortona Gymnastics in Edmonton(!), here to
get another high level competition before the trials,
competed the
compulsory bars apparently better
than everyone else, although the score
didn't
match. Marleen
competed optionals elsewhere, and her 9.45 on BB
was rediculously low, considering
she nailed everything cold: front-on
mount; swtich-leap split leap 1/4; ff-layout-ff; tick-tock Onodi(!);
switch-leap Korbut; Yang Bo jump
(much better than it had been at the
Bluewater meet), and a double tuck. Very elegant, as Marleen always is.
Of course I may be biased
since Marleen is my favourite
gymnast, but even
the non-partisan gym fans I was
sitting with agreed with me on this one.
On FX, Marleen
debuted a wonderful 2.5 twist punch front *pike*, and her
triple twist was landed well also. On V, she performed a powerful
Hristakieva, which is at least as good as any other vault
in Canada.
Natalie Barrington of Mississauga easily won the meet, competing
optionals on both days. She tumbled a nice arabian double front on FX
(but
her other passes of front full PF and front layout PF could use some
upgrading), and did a nice UB combo of higgins
roll to two inverts, hop
to overgrip
Pak salto, a high Tkatchev
and a full-in. SHe
did a Milo
mount on BB, as well as a punch front,
and ffs to double tuck. She is
quickly
rising back up to the form that made her one of Canada's top
juniors.
Unfortunately injuries have held her back recently, so it was
nice to see her do so well here.
Stephanie Cappuccitti of Gemini, coached by
1980 Olympic champ
Elena Davydova, was second and
she showed her high layout Jaeger on bars
(it's
called the Cappuccitti in the code), and an upgraded
BB routine of
front on; punch front; ff-layout-ff, straddle jump 1/2
and double twist.
She had problems landing her tumbling on FX, and her
powerful Yurchenko
full
from warm-ups was no where to be seen in the actual meet.
Lisa
Campognolo of Mississauga had a consistent meet for
the most
part, and was good on BB with a front on,
punch front, two Omeliantchiks,
and a 1.5 twist dismount. On FX, she did three front tumbling
passes
(front through to front full, front full
punch pike, rudi), although each
pass showed solid front handspring flyspring
technique, which IMHO is the
only thing that makes
front tumbling somewhat bearable.
She used Sarah
Mercer's music from 1990 as well,
which is a neat piece.
Theresa Wolf of Mississauga fell on her ff-layout-ff on BB, but
showed nice
amplitude on UB with a high Tkatchev, Jaeger, and
double
layout dismount. She vaulted a Hristakieva,
and tumbled a front full
punch layout barani that rivaled Chusovitina
IMO. Her first pass was
intended to be a layout pike double, but I don't think it
was credited as
her SV was only 9.9.
Shanyn MacEachern of Mississauga
missed her Gienger on UB (but
showed
a great double layout off), and touched down her BB double tuck
off, a routine in which her poor leg form on her acro elements was very
distracting. She showed a very powerful and well danced floor set (nice
piked full-in: why can't more Canadian girls learn
such a move!) Shannyn
is a very highly skilled gymnast; she just appeared a bit
shaky here.
Lena
Degteva appeared to have a wrist problem (it was
wrapped
heavily), but that didn't stop her from
doing a great UB routine, with a
piked
Jaeger, Tkatchev and a great barani
out dismount (very late twist,
which was a neat
surprise after she dind't do the barani
out in
warm-ups!) On BB she did a gainer Omeliantchik to split handstand (a
nice
variation), but on V she only did a layout Yurchenko
(possibly a
Hristakieva on her second, I didn't
see it). ON floor, she watered
down
a lot, doing just a high layout for her first
pass (it was definitley
intentional,
as her run was very slow), and she also did three front
passes;
front full PF, front full, front layout PF. Hopefully she will
be in better form for the trials
Tousek didn't compete on the second day :-(, a shame since
I
really wanted to see that floor routine
again. You all know the one,
right? Oh, I
forgot, NBC missed it :-)........
It
appears that it will be a dogfight at the Olympic trials later
this month, with only three spots available. I can't imagine that any
more than 6 or 7 girls will actually attempt to
qualify. Likely
competitors I would say are Jennifer Exaltacion
(didn't compete here),
Tousek, Degteva, MacEachern, Marilou Cousineau of Gymnix in Montreal,
Lavoie, Wolf, and possibly Stepahnie Hyett and Cappuccitti.
Sault Saint
Marie should be an exciting and tense meet.....
Chris.
