Amanda was probably afraid to look.  She did the same thing
at 1995 team championships during the vault competition.
She was probably rooting for Jaycie and was afraid to see her
make a mistake!

<< So by all means, extol the virtues of your gymnasts, but just give some
thought to the 200 odd gymn members who aren't American, who don't get TV
coverage to the extent you do, and to large extent, couldn't give a stuff in
which order your women's team compete/get a chance to compete in AA.
  >>

I, for one, would be very interested in reading discussions about what order
athletes will compete in for *any* of the countries represented on the Gymn
list.  Maybe I wouldnt be able to participate in those discussions, but they
are still of interest to me.

Subject: Opinion: US Women's lineup at Olympics

Here are the lineups that I think would be most effective at the Olympics (US
women)  in order.  The lineup is according to ability and previous display of
consistancy, not necessarily who I think will actually compete in this order
due to coaches influence (Karolyi's) and name recognition.  Remember, this is
IMHO

VAULT

Phelps
Chow
Moceanu
Dawes
Miller
Strug

BARS

Borden
Strug
Phelps
Miller
Chow
Dawes

This was a hard decision!  We're so deep on bars !!! :)

BEAM

Borden
Strug
Moceanu
Phelps
Dawes
Miller

FLOOR

Borden
Phelps
Moceanu
Dawes
Strug
Miller

Tough call between Borden, Phelps and Moceanu....  Opinions?
Dawes is too risky to put as anchor, so is Strug.  Miller with her
experience, consistency and maturity would be perfect to end with.

To recap:  Strug to anchor on vault, Dawes on bars, Miller on beam and floor

Jenny
(and consultant friend Sabrina who helped me devise the lineup)

Yes, Amanda was in the UB final is '94 at Brisbane (missed her Jaeger and
finished 8th).  That's a really cool tidbit about the team.  I was wondering,
what about the other events?  This is what I came up with off the top of my
head:

VAULT:      BARS:      BEAM:     FLOOR:
Miller      Miller     Miller    Miller
Strug       Dawes      Moceanu   Moceanu
            Strug      Dawes     Dawes
            Phelps     Phelps    Strug
            Borden

Quite the team, huh?  How about that bar lineup?

Subject: predicting poll

In an attempt to start some discussion that is not centered around the
American women, I have decided to conduct this poll.  Just answer the
questions and mail them to me at rg@kent.net.

Answer each of the following for both men and women.  (only if you feel
that you can give a fairly educated answer)

Assume that gymnasts perform as well as they have competed in recent
competitions  (which may not be realistic, but can serve as a reasonable
 benchmark).

1.  Which three teams, in your opinion, will win the medals in Atlanta
     (in order)?

2.  Which ten gymnasts would you expect to place in the top ten in the
      all-around?

3.  Who do you think will place in the top three for each of the four/six
     event  finals?

4.  Who are your three favourite "elite" gymnasts a) of all time, and b)
 presently competing.

Subject: Olympic Trials

Hi! I was in north Carolina w/a friend
during the Olympic Trials so I haven't gotten to put in my 2 cents....

I overall, thought that they were great.
Both teams seem really strong and I am espically proud of the American
woman. Everyone turned in beautiful performances and mistakes were
rare. Too bad that the men didn't have such an easy time. I guess that
it was nerves or something.

I was so nervous for Amanda the whole time.
I really wanted her to make it. Kerri Strug looked awesome. Her chances
of winning a medal in Atlanta are looking more and more promising.

But lying deep within the joy and happiness
of these trials we see the sadness of those who just couldn't pull it
all together. I cried for all of them. For Scott, Chris, Jennie,
Kristie and all of those others who wanted it so badly. I wish that I
could tell all of them that I was pulling for them, especially Scott. I
respect those athletes as much, if not more, than our Olympians.

I am somewhat disappointed of the reactions
towards Moceanus Olympic berth. Here is an athlete who is obviously in
pain, someone who has trained her whole life to be on that team,
someone who deserves to be on that team and there are people knoking
her. No matter how you feel about her gymnastics, it is out of very
poor spirit that you constantly put her down. I for one am not a huge
fan of hers but I respect her as an athlete and I believe that she
deserves that respect from all of us. To say that she doesn't deserve
to be on the team is crap. She is the '95 National Champion and the
silver medalist on the beam at the WC. She is also our bronze medal
champion for the '96 Championships. To say that these accomplishments
aren't remarkable is unbelievable. I have to wonder how you could watch
the interview w/her at the trails and not understand how badly she
wants this and how guienuinly upset she is about her injury. I just
wish that we could all be happy for her and all of the incredable
athletes we saw during the trials. They certainly are, for that matter,
increidable.

                                                Laura

Congrats to Mihai, Way to fight for it!!!!

Hi Liz,
Yeah amanda made finals in 94 on bars.  If she had not missed her jaeger
she could have medaled.
As for the rivalry between her and jaycie, no way.  Amanda was just
concentrating and then congratulating.  I know for a fact that if Jaycie
was up after amanda had allready gone, then she most defenetly watched.

I just wanted everyone to know that there is an article on kim in people
this week.  There is also a featured interview with Nadia olga and
Marylou in the same issue, as well as moceanu's diet.

I think the amount of hours should NOT be limited.. I think they are up to
the individual child and gyms... if you want less hours..there is gyms out
there for you and if you want training and seriuos workout time then there
is gyms for you..
