I guess the men's
gymnastics at the NCAA level is just too boring to be
covered,
I mean they are only the ones who comprise the INTERNATIONAL USA
team, well, except Mihai and MacReady -- all the rest are a product of NCAA
gymnastics -- but of course we wouldn't want to cover
them!

Well, I
won't make a value judgement; maybe it should be
"amercup." :}
Right now, though, it is "amcup."

Re: Chusovitina's bar dismount
Concerning Elfi's comment that Chusovitina's
dismount was fairly
simple, I think Elfi meant to say that it was just a simple dismount
for
her level, like she could do a harder
one. I do believe that she did
a
full-out,
which is named after her on bars.
Anyone know the name

It's the
same piece that Lori Strong of
Georgia is using this year.

Stanford vs. ASU (W)
Chili's Red Hot Invitational - Stanford vs. ASU -
Friday, Mar. 1, 1996
The
Arizona State University Sundevils left the sunny
clime of Tempe
and headed north to the foggy world
of Stanford, CA for the Chili's Red Hot
Invitational. It was the first time
this season that this reporter had seen
either
Stanford or ASU in action. I
wondered how ASU would do since Tina
Brinkman (a.k.a. The Energizer Bunny)
had graduated. What effect would
the
new coaching staff have on Stanford? The Stanford Cardinals had begun
the
season with a 189. Their team score had climbed with each
meet, finally
reaching a 192.95. Was there any more in this team? Tonight was a chance
for both teams to prove themselves.
On
vault ASU outscored Stanford by .80.
ASU had the advantage with a
greater
difficulty level in their vaults. Sundevil freshman Marie
Vincijanovic
nailed a front pike for a 9.95 (1st.).
Teammate Meagan
Wright's front tuck with a half was good for a
second (9.925), while senior
Michelle Naia
took third (9.90) with her front pike.
ASU's 49.30 set score
sent the word to the
Cardinals that if they wanted to play with the big
guys,
they had to hang tough.
On
Bars Stanford answered the call.
They out-scored ASU to shave
.125 off of ASU's
lead. Sundeveil
sophomore Meagan Wright's bar work had a
Miller-Geinger
combo and a full-twisting double back dismount to
garner her
the top honors (9.85). Two Cardinals Katie Fitzpatrick and Keri
Monoham
were right
behind with 9.825's. Katie's
toe-on-half-double front dismount
was a major
crowd pleaser.
On
Beam, both teams hit five good routines.
Stanford edged closer
to ASU by shaving
another tenth off of their lead.
Cardinal sophomore, Keri
Monohan hit her
front tuck mount, a front on the beam and a double twisting
dismount for a 9.90 and first place. ASU senior, Katie Freeland threw a
front 1 1/2 dismount to top off her 9.85 routine for second
place. Her
teammate,
Meagan Wright was just behind her (9.825) with a two layout series
and a fantastic sissone/Omelianchek combination.
It
was on floor that Stanford showed the greatest changes since last
season. The
Cardinals showed off some awesome new front tumbling
combinations,
like a three layout-front series, assorted Rudi's and a host
of front-fulls. Cardinal freshaman
Amy Murakami took top honors (9.95) with
a Rudi to
layout-back, piked double-back, and a
double-twist. Teammates
Tracey
Kohl and Keri Monohan tied for third with a pair of
9.90's. Kohl
nailed
a piked double-back and a front to a Rudi. Monohan hit a
front
through to a piked
double-back, a whip to a double-twist and a front layout
in
her routine.
ASU
answered with their own share of awesome front
tumbling.
Spectacular Senior, Katie Freeland, had a second place 9.925 with
a front-
pike to a double-back and another
double-back. Other ASU highlights
were:
Michelle Naia's
series of three front layouts and a full-twisting
Schushinova
that had *WOW* written all over it; Gina Holleran's
full
twisting double-back; and Meagan Wright's
<<almost>> double-layout, whip-
whip-double-twist,
and double-back.
Stanford's floor set of 49.35 was a valiant comeback effort. They
cut
ASU's lead to .125. It was close
but not enought to grab the lead from
ASU. This was ASU's night. The final score
was 195.475 to 195.35.
Stanford's steady
rise over the season took a giant step forward
with
this meet. They cracked the 195 barrier for a new school record.
Tonight, as Stanford
nipped at the heels of ASU, they both showed that they
can
play with the big guys.

Sorry if this is a repost,
but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't sent the

When
I said the full-in PF was not far behind, I meant that I
don't
think it will be too long before Bogi puts it in her
floor routine
(I know that it has already been done, I just thought it
would be neat to
see Bogi
do it). I had a feeling that that
would be the skill she was
working on, after
seeing how easily she was completing her 2 tuck PFs and
the
Rock'n'Roll challenege. Now that I see that she's opening
with
full-in again, I'm even more convinced that Bogi will throw the full-in
PF
sometime this year. It will
be the first time *she* does it in
competition,
not the first time that the skill has been done period. I
just
wanted to clear this up.

Again,
I'm resending this because I'm pretty sure it wasn't sent the

Although the double double is named after Silivas (she was the

the skill two years before at the European Junior

Btw,
someone was asking how much of a factor Yvonne was in the
meet and that she barely made the finals. Well, she placed 5th, ahead of
three other athletes who were shown, and she probably has a
better chance
to make it to the Olympics this year
than Sang or Dobrescu do. I just
didn't
think it was fair that she was the only woman not to be shown,
especially since her routine was probably one of the
highlights of the meet.
They could have shown John later in the broadcast
or interviewed him, and
then he could have had a
chance to greet everyone at home or whatever. I
just
think the broadcast could have been planned better.
Btw
I don't just feel this way because Yvonne is Canadian. She

Michelle Campi article
There was an article
in this Sunday's Seattle Times (front page of the sports
section
!) on Michelle Campi (now
competing on BB for the UW Huskies).
It
gave a summary of her career and talked
about her injuries, her recovery and
some of her
thoughts on college gymnastics and her future beyond gymnastics.
She talks about the problems with her
former coach Rick Newman, about him
pushing her to
do bars skills that she was uncomfortable with as well the
fact that he was romantically involved with her mother and
living with the
two of them. She also talks about trying to find new
goals and priorities
after elite level gymnastics,
and the fact that she's having a lot of fun
with
college gymnastics.
This is not a great summary, but it's late and I'm very
tired. Since the

Re: Doni Thompson

I didn't think that was fair treatment of a (what,

been
>nbc's editing
of the interview; certainly their own comments tried to
>manufacture a big drama of Tom's fate being at the mercy of

I don't think it's
fair to assume that he was bitter and being unfair to her
on TV. My impression was that the point Foerster
was making was that it's
wrong to put all your
dreams on a teenager. He said that as an adult you
need
to keep that in perspective, and then he laughed as if he knew it would
be silly to be bitter about her quitting.
I know
you took into consideration that it may have been NBC's editing of
the interview that gave it that slant, but I would be upset
if I were Tom
and I read your message. It's a
shame when a TV program represents only one
side
of a story, and I think it has the same effect when someone posts a
message on a list like this that gives this sort of
impression. Many people
who read your message will
not have seen the broadcast and will only have
your
statement to go by.
I think the same is true for the statements some
people have made about Bela
and
Bogi being bitter about Dom M. being on the broadcast
via satellite. I
think it was ridiculous for them
to spend so much time talking to an athlete
who
was not there and is not even the best in the country in many people's
opinion. But to say that they were bitter and condescending
to her is
reading in something I didn't infer. For
those who haven't seen the
broadcast it might seem
as if they didn't acknowledge her, when in fact they
kept
talking to her and wishing her the best even after the mikes were off
them.
I can't say how Tom Foerster or Bela or Bogi really felt, and I'm
sure
people had reasons to think what they think
about what they saw in the
broadcast. But for
someone to say these things on the forum without
explaining
what was said may lead to people
thinking less of someone over a
misunderstanding
and speculation.
I know it's tedious when this list strays from
gymnastics to excessive
discussion of media
coverage. But I just wanted to mention that some people
aren't
around to defend themselves.
Just my lengthy opinion,
Orion
