1995 WORLD GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIPS:
U.S. MEN EARN BERTH FOR '96 OLYMPIC GAMES

Luan Peszek, Public Relations Director
Ramonna Robinson, Public Relations Coordinator

The U.S. men's team finished ninth at the 1995 World Gymnastics
Championships in Sabae, Japan, earning a berth for the U.S. men at the
1 Summer Olympic Games. China won the competition, followed by Japan
in second and Romania in third.

While the U.S. men were in third place going into the optional
round of competition, they placed 11th in optionals-only, dropping
their overall rank to ninth. Problem areas included a fall on parallel
bars, high bar and pommel horse, as well as weak vaulting
performances.

Head Coach Peter Kormann said, "They did well. We had some breaks,
and we need to improve our difficulty. We made a big step in
compulsories, but we have work to do for the Olympics."

John Roethlisberger, the top U.S. finisher, commented, "We did well,
but it was tough out there. I would have thought for sure, if we hit
like we did tonight, we would be in the top six. I was surprised we
dropped as much as we did We're going to have to beef it up for
Atlanta."

The Hungarian girls were weeping for joy at the end of the session,
very happy with their achievements.

JPN includes Mari Kosuge, Risa Sugawara, Hanako Miura
GRE includes Lambrini Apostolidou, Vassou Tsavdaridou, Virginia Karentzou

In the DSF TV presentation, their studio guest was none other than
Maxi Gnauck (Queen of the uneven bars). She's looking very well though
it's hard to imagine that it was the same Maxi in the mid'80s.

More to come later.

Subject: Re: Worlds: Womens Team Results

I would like to say thanks to Sherwin for great postings on Worlds.
Ditto for Rochele as always.  It is nice to hear about the triumphs that
the media not always covers here in the US...ie. France, Hungary, and
Australia's personal successes.  I can't wait to hear our tv
personalities comment on how they think the men lost it all and how
disappointing the women's result is.  In my opinion, I am proud of the
men..I too was so excited to see them in third after compulsories..After
their ninth place finish, I was sad, but proud that they made the top
ten.  The men's team is getting stronger.  And they will as long as we
encourage them.  If the US media keeps putting them down, I would be
discouraged also.
As for the women, third is good.  Romania is excellent and Mo Hullan is
remarkable - I could watch her on bars all day.  For a team stricken with
injuries, I think the US women did great.  Especially with our young team
members....
Good luck to those that qualified for AA and EF...I can't wait to watch
on ABC tomm.

PS.  Regarding ESPN coverage, the dates given for this week, are they
still correct?  I looked on Espn's homepage and they say that they are
re-running trials, but nothing is said about Worlds.

1) I am SO PSYCHED that Lilia finally is hitting and getting into
all 4 finals is so cool.

2) I noticed that in one report of the team members, there was
only six chinese gymnasts listed. Does that mean that they went
6-5 instead of 7-6-5? If so, there results are even more impressive.

3) Mo on top is also impressive. BUt her next team mate being in
20th place makes me wonder how they had so much depth to pass the
US and Russia.

4) Bronze, given the depleted team, is no problem. Atleast they were
on the stand.

5) Anyone know what Bela has to say about his results and the
placing of his pupil?

Jeff

P.S. World are on this weekend, right!!!!
