As far as I know, 1993 was
the first Soapberry Shop World Gymnastics Challenge
and
it was at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.
Last year, it moved to Hamilton's
Copps
Coliseum. This year they got a new
sponsor, Subway.
In 1990, there was the Canadian Airlines
something-or-other Cup that was a
World Cup (qualifier?)
for men and an invitational for women. It was at
the
Skydome in
Toronto. This was where I
first saw Shannon Miller! BTW,
trivia here: the (ahem) Toronto'96 committee had gymnastics
going in the
Skydome in their bid for the Olympics.
Now, if you want to
*flip* back to the '70s, there were Ontario Milk Meets
at
Maple Leaf Gardens where we first saw Elfi Schlegel
compete
internationally.
In 1984, a few months
after the Olympics, there was the Ontario Cup at MLG,
which
was won by Ildiko Hattayer
(London Gymkips), who I understand is now
married to Canadian Team member Mike Inglis.
I
better stop before I sound too old, eh?
Regards,
Grace

Re: Simona Pauca and Laura Cutina
I
don't know about Pauca, but I do know that Cutina remained in the
top six
for the Romanain team through at least 1985. She was in both the
European
Championships (where she was the number three Romanian), and at the
World
Championships (where she was the number four Romanian, I think, but she
didn't make any finals). The last time I saw her name in some
results was at
the 1987 University Games. These games had some pretty impressive
fields
back then...
I
hope I could help.

Cutina became a coach in Bucharest. Pauca (I
think) got married and had at
least one
child.

Eugenia is coaching in New York and
has been for a couple of years.
Before that she coached in Puerto Rico and
before that she was in the
circus (she also might
have gone back to the circus between PR and NY).

I was
wondering if anyone could make an educated prediction about who they
think is going to be on the womens
Olympic team next year? Several people in
our
local gym were discussing it and besides the four "gimme's"
that everyone
agreed on--Miller, Dawes, Strug, and Moceanu-- no one
thought that there was
another dominant chioce. Any
ideas???

Diving
I started diving after gymnastics and trained with the
college
diving team my freshman year, and I
remember that a large
proportion of the divers
were former gymnasts. The
coach
commented on this, and encouraged former
gymnasts with the info
that those who picked up
diving late but had been gymnasts were
able to
reach a competitive level very quickly.
So there's often
a nice payoff for making
the switch: it's something new, fun,
easier for an
older body to keep up, and you're likely to be
pretty
good at it! There are a couple of
reasons that
gymnasts tend to make good divers,
beyond the obvious fact that
tumbling and twisting
skills transfer readily, along with good
kinesthetic
sense -- i.e., as in gymnastics, it pays to be on the
short
side: a longer body is harder to
control and you don't
have as much room before you
hit the water. But it's not as
extreme as in gymnastics -- divers tended to be just on the
short
side of average. So it might be good for those who don't
survive
the growth spurt very well. (My info is all from 15 years ago,
but I do hear comments on diving competitions fairly
frequently
about somebody or other having once
been a gymnast. Usually the
switch was made relatively young and the gymnast hadn't been
a
star, so I don't recognize the name. The comments are frequently
made when the dive starts in a handstand, something the
former
gymnasts usually are particularly good
at).
Also - for folks like me who were not great on vault and floor,
the
springboard was a pretty good equalizer!

Meet in Italy
Does anyone have information on a meet to be held in
Sicily around November
18? It's called something like "Rio Trinidad Canatia Cup".
Does anyone
know who the delegates are? One
of our club's gymnasts (Vanessa Atler) is
supposed to go and her mom wants to know more about it.
Thanks
for your help.

While on the topic of the Romanians....What is the music that Gina uses

her floor exercise? Also, can anyone tell me more about Marinescu

a while but I have heard little
bio. info. about her. Thanks.

olympic picks
The
way I see it, a lot of people will be competing for the last spot. I
would
envision Miller, Moceanu, Dawes, Strug,
Phelps, and Borden all to
make it. The fight will be be
between D&J Thompson, Powell, Chow, and
(maybe)
Kulikowski.
I can't wait for trials-the only thing I'm certain
of is that it will be an amazing competition.

Just
wondering-- Is Monceanu going to be old enough at the
next
Olympics(15) or are they going to fake her
age so that she can compete.
Thanks.

I
think that the Olympic team for 1996 will be something like this:
Miller
Dawes
Strug
Borden
Phelps
Moceanu
Chow
Donnie
Thompson and Jennie Thompson also have very good chances of making
the team.

No
one has mentioned Zmeskel yet. Do you not think she will make the
team, did you forget about her, or are you not including her
because
she is not competing yet?

Moceanu/Zmeskal
Moceanu will be old enough to compete at the Olympics
because she will
turn 15 in the same year (she was
born in 1981).
I didn't mention Zmeskal on my
list because, as much as I would love to
see her
on the team, it's impossible to tell how she will compare to the
rest of the Americans until she starts competing again. Anyone have any
clues
as to when that may be?

In
the November issue or IG, there was a small bit on her in which she said
she hopes to compete for the year is out. I don't know if
she meant
competition year or calendar year,

The Olympic team...hmm...I agree with the
people who say it is too
soon to tell whether Zmeskal will be up to par, so I'm going to make
my decision leaving her out for the moment.

OK,
I dared assign events. This list of course leaves out a number of
top contenders. I think, among those who will also
challenge, are Amy Chow,
Jennie Thompson, and most likely,
Kimbo. So...*shrugs* all we DO know
is that it's probably going to be the most challenging
trials in a long
time. There are at least twelve athltes in contention. However, with due
respect to the Romanians, they will most likely be in the
same situation.
When's the last time we all had so many veterans stick
around?

Introduction
New subscriber here, and the obligatory
introduction. I
first
ventured onto the Internet a few days ago, and
decided as a
test case to look for gymnastics
info--and happily stumbled upon
this forum. I am of that inspired-by-Olga-Korbut generation.
I competed USGF (back when there
were just classes I-III)
then High School, spending summers at Woodward camp.
The
Moscow /LA Olympic boycotts took away some of the
sparkle,
and for several presidential administrations I watched
the
sport only from a distance, although I've always kept pinned
up a picture of Natalia Shaposhnikova
in a perfect handstand
on bars. Re-gained curiosity by the year or
two before
Barcelona Games--which I basically missed because the finals
were broadcast the same days I was taking the bar exam and my
boyfriend mis-programmed the
VCR!--so I revived the subscription to
IG and started
tumbling again sporadically.
Don't like my gyms out
here in California, where I moved to work as a
union-side
labor lawyer, as much as I did my
"home" in NYC. But am
glad to see
that there is some forum other than
IG to keep track of the
sport, fill in the gaps of things I missed, and, I hope, get
beyond
the glib defensiveness and work to improve
the sport for gymnasts at
all levels.
