Can anyone help me in this kind of research? I'm writing an article about
the National women technical centre in Milan, built, like the one in Deva
(Rom), to prepare the italian team for OGs, Worlds and Europeans. I'd like
to know where and when centres like this have been created in other countries.

Subject: skill values

I've always thought that gym difficulty values were a little on the arbitrary
side. In trampolining each 1/4 somersault rotation (judged by change in upper
body position), and each 1/2 twist rotation gets a tariff (difficulty) of
0.1. There is also an extra 0.1 for piked or straight shapes in non-twisting
single somersaults, and 0.1 for each whole somersault in a double (or
triple), regardless of twist.

So a back somersault gets 0.4 and a 2 1/2 twist 0.5 (to use the current
gym examples). Isn't this more sensible than having moves graded in what
appears to be an semi-arbitrary fashion?

Maria Petrova has announced that she will not participate in the
Atlanta Olympics. She said she "felt tired". But at a celebration for
the 10 best Bulgarian sportspersons [Petrova was ranked 4th], Neshka
Robeva said that Petrova would be in Atlanta...

Subject: Doni Thompson

Hello!

I'm new to GYMN. I was wondering about Doni Thompson. I have
heard from IG that she has recently retired. Is she plagued by injuries
or is just tired of the sport? I have been following her performances
ever since her debut on junior championship. She seems too young to
already have given up on the sport. The US National Team will certainly
miss her spunky charm and great talent in the Olympics and future
competitions. I know I will.

No way! I do think the front landing on the 2 1/2 twist makes it hard enough
to be a D, but just think about how much power a gymnast has to have to be
able to rotate a double back off a surface 4 inches wide! Landings aren't
everything.

Yes, but if a souble back was a C, then a full in and a 2 1/2 twist and
triple twist could be D's, leaving E for really unique skills, as in a double
front, or a double double.

Subject: Moceanu's hop on FX

I noticed that back at the end of Nov and beginning of Dec, folks started
discussing Dom's hop after a pass on FX. I thought I had read on this list
that it was something like this: in a previous competition, she completed a
pass that had given her trouble. She was so excited that she kinda jumped
with excitement. Bela thought the judges and crowd found it cute, so they
added it as part of the routine. Somebody else might want to confirm this
for me, though.

On Dec. 7, Beth Squires wrote an explanation about IG's lack of international
coverage. Although I agree that having a small staff would make it difficult
to write reports on ALL meets, I can't help but to feel that they should be
trying to implement the following cycle: small magazine starts publishing
and some people subscribe; magazine increases coverage to attract more
subscribers; with more subscribers comes more advertising; with the added
revenue, the mag expands staff and improves quality (more photos, etc.);
this results in more subscribers....

Although I am not yet a subcriber to IG ( I just moved, so I was waiting to
sign up for some gym mags. ), it sounds like many people on this list get it,
so I'm curious what their circulation is. If they're aiming for an intnl.
target readership, then I would think they'd be open to intnl. advertisers.
Also, don't they get any support from the intnl. gymn. organizations?

This is what was shown in today's telecast of the Elite Canada Senior High
Performance (Day Two) competition on December 9, 1995. The telecast was 1.5
hours long, pretty well commercial-free. The hosts were Carol Orchard (on
"loan" from CBC) and Frank Stanicsi of Rogers Community 10.

Marilou Cousineau on vault - Hristakieva, big side step on 1st, long wait,
