What is the value for a Round off layout on mount to the beam.

What is the value for a Round off layout (two foot landing) mount to
the beam...I noticed that Alicia Ingram of Dynamo lands the mount
on two feet and wondering if it is rated higher than the layout (one

The FIG Code doesn't distinguish between two foot and step out, it just
says layout, unless something has changed (I don't have lists of new
skills for the last couple of Worlds, but I don't know whether it would
be considered new or if it's already meant to be included). RO full is an E
and RO back tuck is a D (btw, when I checked this, I noticed the Code
describes the ro full, with Garrison's name on it, as "stretched" -- I
thought she did it tucked?).

Subject: IG at bookstores

In northern California, I've run across IG at several bookstores (the chain
Barnes & Noble included).

I was in New York city in early December, and I had not yet seen the Worlds
issue though it was being commented on in gymn. I scoured the big bookstores
and even a few stores dedicated to magazines-only looking for it, with no
luck.

In Penn Station one night I went into a little convenience store to grab a
drink. To my surprise, next to Sports Illustrated in the magazine rack,
voila! Podkopayeva attacking vault.

Subject: American Cup Comments

I sat down, watched the tape with pen in hand & judged the routines. My
comments:
1) Regarding the bars dismount (I think it was a 1/2 in-1/2 out) and done
by Kerri Strug, Kristie Powell and Tchusovitina. Elfie commented, "A
dismount Kerri can do in her sleep." "Tough dismount" for Kristie and "a
fairly simple dismount." for Tchusovitina. I suspect the "tough dismount"
comment was because Kristie was rather low & took a step rather than a
comment on the difficulty of the dismount.

2) Tchusovitina's floor routine Start Value is 9.9 under international
rules whether in Competition I, II or III. (I assume the American Cup was
judged under Competition I rules, but don't know for sure.) All her "C"
and above difficulty is listed below. She also had 3 "B" leaps.
(Note: RO=round-off, FF= flip flop, FHS =front handspring)
1. RO-FF-Layout double with full-out (named for her in Code!): E
2. RO-FF-Tucked double with full-out (not in Code) I assume: E
(it could be a "D," but won't matter in calculating Start Value)
3. FHS-Layout front full somie-Front piked with 1/2 & at least .2 in
execution/amplitude deduction. This would be D + B & worth +.2 in
originality. However, due to the .2 execution deduction, no
originality bonus can be awarded. (This is why her Start Value ends
up at 9.9)
4. FHS-Layout front full somie-tuck front: D + A which is +.2 in
originality bonus.
5. RO-Schushushunova: C

In competition I, gymnast needs 3 A's, 3 B's, 2 C's for difficulty. We'll
need to "use" 1 "D" to count as a "C," but she still has 2 extra "E's" and
1 extra "D" beyond the difficulty requirement. Note that each extra D is
worth .1 and each extra E is worth .2 in bonus. Max extra D/E bonus is .3

To calculate her Start Value:
9.4 (all difficulty & special requirements are fullfilled)
+ .3 (extra D/E bonus maximum)
+ .2 (orginality for D+A tumbling)

Hope that helps! And if any of the international judges out there know the
value of the tucked double back with full-out, it'd be nice to know.

3. A last comment. Yes, the judging rules are tough & complex. I have
degrees in Business and Engineering, and in many ways, calculus was easier
than is staying up on the rules of the sport. However, I love the sport
and the mental challenge of applying the rules. I think anyone who
comments on this Forum is bright & interested enough to take their judging
exams and would encourage those interested to do so.

At the FIGWTC meeting in Dortmund in November '94 the following elements
were revalued, (thank goodness). Effective 1st June 1995.
Vault; 4.505 RO-=BDLO front to 4.410 9.9. S/V=20
Floor; 1.401 Popa to 1.315 C
7.202 flyspring to 7.102 A
8.501 front1/1 to 8.407 D

Chusovitina's floor routine.
The acro pass, front 1/1 layout=BD cannot have been given bonus as this=
is
a D+ C direct connection and is worth 0.3. ie full connection bonus on the
one combination.=20
Her other direct connection front 1/1 punch front is a D+A and is a 0.2
bonus. This must have been given to make the SV 9.9. =20

I am sure that it was not a barani she was going for due to those elements
only being an A.
And a layout front =BD is a C.
In Brisbane Worlds in '94 Chorkina did a front 1/1 to punch front layout
walkout E + C then, ( could have been called an aerial walkover , and
therefore an A) it was rated a C salto and was given full connection bonus
of 0.3. She needed this as it was her only connection bonus. She was
already missing a gym B, and ended up with a SV of 9.9. She needs to have
been deducted 0.2 to lose that bonus so in effect the panel have to score
her out of 9.7, so her score of 9.587 seems OK.
Anyway I would have loved to have seen the Am Cup. I would have liked to
have seen the French International more though, has anyone got any info re
that meet. The scores were posted last week but no more information.
There were some big names there.

I agree completely. I too went back and watched my tape of the American
Cup looking for that and I felt Elfie was saying simple as in it was
simple for Chusovitina to do it not that the dismount was simple .

A flyspring is a front handspring from two feet, to the hands, and then to
two feet. (The FIG Code mentions that the flyspring should have a hecht
phase before hand support) Although it was devalued internationally to an A
element, it is still a B element in the USAG JO program. (The version that
goes from 2 feet to two hands and then to two feet.)

For those of you who are interested in what former national team members
Dennis and Dan Hayden are doing now, I had the pleasure and good fortune
to meet Dennis at the Golden Isles Classic today. Dennis and Dan are
the owners of Hayden's Gymnastics down in Florida. I attended the level
10 session, in which two of Dennis's gymnasts were competing. According
to Dennis, Dan coaches the guys. I don't remember too many specifics
from Hayden's gymnasts, but I do remember being impressed with their
beautiful form and their difficulty, including consecutive layouts and
front tucks on beam.

Subject: REVIEW: '88 USSR Jr. Champs. Video

I recently bought a video of the 1988 USSR Jr. Champs. from a Gymn
subscriber and thought that others on the list might be interested in it, as
well.

Men and women (or should that be "boys and girls"?) receive equal coverage
on this tape, which lasts approximately 2 hrs. 20 minutes. The competition
is really interesting, with the skill level being very high. Several boys
were performing tucked double fronts and layout fronts on V, and Mariniches,
consecutive release moves and triple backs on HB, for example. The absolute
coolest skill came from an unknown boy who did an Arabian *triple* front as
his first FX pass! Coming a close second was the boy whose vault was a
front tuck on, handspring off. Surprisingly, the boys performed their FX to
music (piano). There was no choreography or dance involved; the music was
just there as "background." The girls' competition was also impressive:
lots of double layouts on FX, Rulfovas and Yurchenko loops on B, etc. Most
interesting skills by the girls (IMO) were a triple back dismount off UB and
a full-twisting Rulfova mount on B. Some of the gymnasts I recognized were
Gutsu, Chusovitina (no wimpy front tumbling for her here ;-) ), Kozolva,
Levochkina, Stovbchataya, Abrashitova, Kolyvanov, Scherbo, and Sharipov.

Fans of Soviet gymnastics and collectors of gymnastics videos will mostly
likely love this tape. The price of the video is US$29 plus postage and is
available in the NTSC format (and probably PAL as well).

It's kinda late here in Montreal, so I'll just post a summary for now of
today's competitions:

Hill's Angels of Gaithersburg, Maryland swept both the junior and senior team
honours. Angels Mary Elise Ray dominated the junior competition while
Dominique Dawes won a close match over Uzbekistan's Oksana Chusovitina.

Top Quebec gymnasts were Claudine Pinard of Gym Richelieu in junior and
Marilou Cousineau of host club Gymnix competing for "Team Canada" in senior.

Unfortunately, the Ukranian entrants Yelena Shaparnaya and Tatiana Malaya were
way-layed due to air ticketing and visa kerfuffles. Hopefully, the tickets
were ordered with cancellation insurance.

Oksana hurt her back in practice on Friday, eased up on her floor tumbling
throwing "only" double layout & double tuck without full-outs, and still
drew high score of the day with 9.90.

Some cool stuff included a headspring to front tuck salto beam mount by
Anastasia Dzundziak of Uzbekistan, and a double twisting front layout on
floor from little Brazilian Daniele Hipolito in junior. Awesome Dawesome
still has great bars without the Hindorff. On floor, she stuck a great
double layout but jumped out of bounds on her middle front tumbling pass
(and nearly into my lap).

Christopher Scott has notes to post, but here are the top 10 AA score for
