a
huge article about Shannon Miller in USA Today. It was about how she
hasn't won the gold yet in an olympics
and such. If anyone would like it

PowerBars, again!
Once again, we hear a Powerbar bash on the forum. If there
really is something
wrong with either the product
or the company, would someone please post those
details
on the list?? I heard nothing but good things about them until I
subscribed to gymn, but what I
hear are sarcastic remarks rather than real
information.
If there is a real issue that I'm not aware of, I'd like to hear
about it so that I can make a choice about continuing to use
the product or
not.
Thanks,
Lynanne
(If it's just a
joke that began before I subscribed, it would be good to know
so that those of us who like the product don't keep
wondering why it gets such
bad press on the
list.)

Moceanu's condition
I have some news on the state of Moceanu's
injury and I thought that I'd share the article w/all of
you.
" Dominque Moceanu
has resumed regular
workouts but is still in some
pain a month after doctors found a stress
fracture
in her leg.
With 10 days to go before Olympic
Gymnastics competion
begin, Moceanu is using portable ultra-sound
device, getting extra sleep and taking vitamins w/hope that
the
fracture will heal. "She's working out on
it slowly. It's getting
better," said her
coach, Bela Karolyi. "not like before, but it is
painful."
Moceanu,14, is in Greensboro NC this week
for a pre-Olympic exibition.
"I see a
definite improvement every day."
Karolyi
said. "She is trying and striving because everything is
possible. She is in very good working condition and working
mood."

Bravo will repeat "Tokyo Olympiad" next week
The movie
"Tokyo Olympiad" is a 1965 Japanese documentary about the
1964 Olympic games.
It includes about 7 minutes of footage of gymnastics
(women and men).
It's mostly just snippets of the top competitors, but
the snake's eye view of men's high bar is interesting. Better yet,
Bravo is actually
showing the original 3-hour version (and letterboxed, to
boot).
The
gymnastics segment starts about 75 minutes or 80 minutes into the movie.
Times
for next week (Eastern), on the Bravo cable channel:
Thursday 7/18 8-11 p.m.
Friday 7/19 1:45-4:45 a.m.
Friday 7/19 1-4
p.m.

Moceanu's recovery & NCAA question
Hi
guys! I don't know how many of you have heard yet, but there was an
article in the Houston Chronicle today about DomM.. "Moceanu to return
in
time for Games". It interviews her father
and doctor (who both think she
will be in top form
in Atlanta) along with giving lots of general summary.
For those of you who
don't know, basically she has "made miraculous strides
in her recovery" and has been cleared to take part in
full workouts this
week. She will also attempt to
perform full routines at the exhibition this
weekend
in NC. Anybody who wants to see the entire article can do so at
http://www.chron.com click on the icon"much
of the days printed paper" and
then
"sports" and you should be able to find it. You may have to
register
your name and email address with HCI
before you are allowed to read the
article (this
is just so they know you have read, or at least know about,
their copyrights). IF you can't get it...email me and I'll
help you :)
Now, I have a question: I have been reading the "US
Olympic Factbook" and
more
specifically the section on gymn. (there
is lots of gymn history,
summary,
and highlights of '96 hopefuls for those of you who haven't seen it
yet..about
55 pages of gymn!) It has factoids on some pages and
one stated
that NCAA gymnasts are only allowed to
work-out 20 hours per week. So does
this mean that
the US mens team has regulated practice hours? And
yet the US
women train 7-8 hours per day, six days
a week? I realize that the mens
Olympic team is
not affected by this now, but they were back in '92, were
they not?? Somebody please tell me if this is right, I am
not familiar with
NCAA regulations. Thanks!!

I would just
like to add, that I argee fully that men are
innovators, a
fair reason why the women were not
doing them earlier was the apparatus
itself. The
UB of 20 years ago was not condusive tkatchevs and other
release
moves. It wasn't until Shap started doing giants and
the
other gymnast followed suit did we see the
bars start going wider, etc.
Also, the form of the gymnast earlier on
release moves was alot worse
than
what we see now. I guess coaching has alot to do with
this change.

Russian Women and Atlanta
Just to add to what Jeff said about the
Russian women's preparation for
the Olympics:
during the CBC broadcast of last year's Subway challenge
meet
(in which Galieva and Grosheva
competed), the commentator, Carol
Orchard was saying that Leonid Arkaev had said that after Sabae
they "went
home and reworked routines"
and that they "were fiercely approaching
Atlanta with a new
attitude." Don't count them
out.
Yes
the US beat Russia in Dortmund and Sabae, but if (and know
there are always some ifs in gymnastics) Russia had hit, it
would have
been very different. In fact in Dortmund, Kotchetkova,
Grosheva, and
Fabrishnova
were all nursing injuries that relaly affected their
routines.
For example all three competed very watered down floor routines (Grosheva
ended with a double
twist, and didn't do her double twising front; Dina
didn't do a double layout and had just enough difficulty for
a 10 SV in
competition 1b; and Fabrishnova's
was so watered down I don't think it had
the 10.0
SV for competition 1b). So Russia
wasn't exactly competing under
the best
circumstances in either competition, so if things go right for
them this time...let me just say that if all teams hit in
Atlanta, and the
judging is fair (I'm keeping my
fingers crossed on this one), it should be
a four
way race for the gold, with the potential of all four teams holding
the lead at different times, and it should come down to the
last routine.
If all teams hit, I think the top four are, in order: 1.
Russia 2. China
3. Romania 4. USA.
Russia still has the best team overall IMO, and they
could have whipped the pants off ROmania
in 1994 Dortmund if they had all
been healthy;
they just have to go out there and prove it. I can only
hope
that the team event in Atlanta will be the four way right down to the
wire race that it deserves to be.
Please don't hesitate to comment (I'm sure many of you will.....)
Chris.

1996 Olympics, Team comp
I agree with those posters touting Russia....They could win... In Dortmund
they
bombed beam to lose to the US by a very slim margin, and the US hit all
24
routines.. In Sabae,
Dominique Moceanu got just the score she needed
to
beat Russia by less than 0.1. Give me a large break and a coke, but dont
give her either, well she
has the former and if you give her the latter
it'll
end up in People Magazine. The Russians are more talented, more
creative, and more polished than the US or Romania.. Unfortunately they
always seem injured or a little off...
However, you
must also remember that the Olympics is in the US so there is
an automatic 0.1 deduction for every athlete not American,
plus another
tenth if the routine is good.. These are called the American Cup or scAM
cup rules, first used in
a major int'l competition at the 1991 Indianapolis
Worlds.

Add this to her top ranking after the team competition, she is a

We haven't heard her name

She got 1 gold, 1 silver and 2

Pods was

Marinescu

Moceanu Working Out, Will Perform this Weekend
Hi
everybody!
There is an article in the USA Today "Atlanta 96" web
site about Dominique
Moceanu's injury. You can
find the whole article at
http://www.usatoday.com/olympics/oly.html
It
starts out, "Only a week and a half before the olympics begin, 14-year-old
U.S. gymnast
Dominique Moceanu is still in some pain from the
stress fracture
doctors diagnosed in her right leg
last month. 'She's working out on
it
slowly.
It's getting better,' said her coach, Bela Karolyi. 'Not
like
before, but it's still painful
yes.'"
The article goes on to say that Moceanu
will perform in a pre-Olympic
exhibition this
weekend in North Carolina. It also
quotes her doctor as
saying that the fracture is
"infinitely better now", but he says there is
still
a risk that she could break her leg at the olympics,
but it's "not a
very high risk."
The
interesting thing about the article is that it's clear
Bela still isn't
sure if
Dominique will be ready for the games.
He says things like he
"hopes"
she will be ready and he "thinks" she can do it. He is seems
cautiously
optimistic, though -- if you can believe what he's telling the
media.

No,
she had a few mistakes in trials and finished out of the
top
three. Its really too bad because
she has lots of

Reaching too far?
Dominique Moceanu has her place on U.S. team despite having a broken
leg
by: Mike Holtzclaw
Newport
News Daily Press
Dominique Moceanu was on TV the other night
brushing tears from her
cheek. It was very moving, almost enough to
make you go along with the plan.
Almost.
It
was in a taped interview shown during the telecast of the U.S.
Olympic Gymnastic Trials, and Moceanu was choking back tears as she talked
about how her
dream would be ruined if she did not get to participate in the
Olympics later this
month.
This
young girl has a stress fracture in her shin. A broken leg.
And
because she is a rising star, a cash cow primed for the milking,
everyone wants
to put her on the Olympic team. Now
that the Games are fast
approaching, people are concerned about medal counts,
endorsement
opportunities,
TV ratings -- concerned about everything except her leg.
Understand that we are not talking about Jack Youngblood here, the
NFL
lineman
who once played an NFC championship game and a Super Bowl with a stress
fracture in his
leg. Youngblood was an adult, a man
in his 30's making alot of
money playing
football.
Dominique Moceanu is 14 years old, and like
any other child, she is
reliant upon the adults around her to supply commmon sense and good judgement
when her
youthful exuberance tells her that everything will probably work out
OK.
Never mind Jack Youngblood.
The better comparison here is the 7 year
old girl who
died earlier this year in a wrongheaded attempt to fly an airplane
across the
country.
Everyone knew that was a bad idea, a tragedy waiting to happen. Maybe a
second -grader
is physically capable of piloting an airplane, but that does not
make her
emotionally mature enough to accept the risks inherent in this stunt.
That's what she has parents for. But those people, who should have
been
talking
her out of it, instead were the ones talking her into it.
And
when her plane went down, reporters and columnists around the
country kicked
themselves for not trying to stop this before it happened. But
everyone had let
it go on because it was good copy, good video. The public
liked the story
of this plucky girl, abd besides, she would probably
come out
OK.
Dominique Moceanu is another plucky little
girl, and she figures she can
tough this out.
It is normal for a strong-willed child to think like that.
And it is up to competent, caring parents
to sit her down and say: "Honey, we
know how much
this means to you, but you're not healthy enough. We are so
sorry, but some
day you might understand that this was the right dicision."
But
nobody seems to be saying that.
Her
coach, Bela Karolyi, said
he wished he could give her his leg.
Of
course,
if he was concerned about her as a young girl and not just as the
latest filly in
his stable, he would not have to offer his leg to her -- he
would simply
refuse to let her imperil her own.
Instead, he is leading her back on o the mats, presumably with her
parents
blessing. Telling her to run on her
broken leg, to hurl herself
through the air over and over again, and above all, to make
sure she sticks her
landing.
There is another possibility, one that nobody wants to mantion because
it would mess up
a neat story. The posibility that she will come out twisting,
spinning vault
and land with the grotesque impact that would make Joe
Theismann's
nationally televised broken leg look like a stubbed toe by
comparison. If she sits out the Olympics, Dominique Moceanu would be
heartbroken. And she would cry.
But we
could all handle those tears alot more readily than
the ones she
might
end up shedding otherwise.
Michele
