Schmiden Rhythmic International 1996
====================================

Schmiden, Germany - March, 1996.

Larissa Lukianenko dominated this event in a relatively weak
field. She is still as sharp as ever with smart quick handling
of the apparatus in all four events.

Also a welcome return to Tatiana Ogrizko in Belarus colours
after being absent for the whole of 1995. The Belarussians
were often being accused of being too thin in the past but I
don't think they will have that problem anymore. The Germans did
well too in front of the home support. Many gymnasts are
exhibiting a few new routines in preparation for the Atlanta
Olympics.

Way back when, when Cabbage Patch dolls were the huge rage and people
were flying halfway around the world to get them (c. 1984), we had a meet
with a team from Parkettes, and the girls from Parkettes had Cabbage Patch
dolls with leotards that perfectly matched their own, made (if I recall
correctly; I'm pretty sure I do) by the same person who made the girls'
leos.  The tiny leos were really cute.

Hi!  Has anyone heard anything about the Budget Rent A Car Invitational, a
Men's & Women's event to take place in Miami on April 6th?  I live herlive in
Miami and have not heard a word about it, nor is it on the local Ticketmaster
system.  The only way I know about it is from the calendar of events in IG,
USA Gymnastics & The web page for USAG.  I would like to know more about it
and what gymnasts are slated to attend.  We are a very hungry gymnastics
community here in South Fla and it's ashame that USAG is not publicizing this
event.  I would promote the heck out of something like this.

Please post info. or e-mail me

Thanks!

Sorry everyone, I noticed that gremlins got in my last post.

All of the half symbols came out reading BD for some reason.
I will try to remember to write fractions in full in future.
Unfortunately I was unable to see the Am cup so I was unaware whether Chuso
did a pike front half ( which you call a barani,  but we don't) or layout
front half.  Free cartwheels ( What we call Baranis) and aerials are not
considered saltos and cannot be used for bonus connections.

If it is true that no perfect 10s have been given since Barcelona, then how
will the new code be changed? Is it perfect now, since it keeps the scores
below 10 by keeping most gymnasts below the 10 SV? I wonder. Doesn't
the code normally get changed after every Olympics except for minor changes
that can occur at anytime?

Where do all the non-US, Euorpean, Canadian, and Australians get the
opportunity to see gymn (other than participating in some form [coach/athlete]?)
I wonder since it seems that most, but not all, of the traffic comes
from seemingly only a few people. I know that Sherwin talks about UK gymn,
the Aussies speak up, as do the Canadians, but this is an international
forum. So, I was wondering how the 'others' get there info? Do you have
access to US television like NBC and ESPN (which I know do go all across
the world.) Is EUROSPORT or other networks a source.

I was just wondering. Rachele routinely posts the stats about what people
are on this list. Though the majority are from US, I was wondering about
the other people on this list.

I hope this gets through as it is my first post to this list.  Was at the
Pikes Peak Invitational last night and got to see Kristy Powell land all
of her passes on floor.  It was a really good outing for her except she
decided to skip doing the beam.  I was kind of disappointed to see that
they decided to count only three events in the all around even though
Kristy was the only one who didn't do all four events.  I guess since
Colorado Aerials is the sponsor of the event they can choose whatever
they like.  I'm sure if she had competed beam she would have won that
also as she was dead on last night.  Hope she can hold on until Trials as
it should be an interesting meet!!

I don't know if it was an international competition, but to my memory Mo
Huilan scored a 10 on uneven bars in one of the major meets held in Asia. I
think it was last year and it was perhaps the China Cup.

Subject: International Gymnix Event Finals

Yowsa!  What a day!  Event Finals at International Gymnix 96!

Juniors and Seniors competed together under FIG Competition III rules today.
Things were a bit hectic trying to photograph and annotate what was
happening on 2 events at once.

Hill's Angel Dominique Dawes followed coach Kelli Hill's advice
and successfully fended off the "Meet Monster" (or "Meat Monster"?) &
captured gold on all events that she competed on.  Dawes vaulted a
great Yurchenko layout 1.5 twist and a lofty front handspring front
pike stuck.  On bars, we were treated to the Hindorff that she left out
yesterday.

Oksana Chusovitina once again was relentless in keeping pace with
Dominique Dawes.  Look below and you'll see how close the scores
were on vault and bars.  Then they tied on beam, both performing
solidly.

Dominique and Marilou Cousineau withdrew from floor finals.
This became Oksana's showcase opportunity and she certainly wowed
us all.  Shaquille O'Neal could walk under Oksana's opening double layout,
followed back with the tucked full out that she opted not to do
yesterday.  I still don't know whether Lynn Smith's panel of judges
gave her a D or an E on that (maybe she'll tell us if she reads
this post ;^).  Nevertheless, the start value was undisputedly
10.0 here as the 3rd tumbling line had a nice front full
stretched to a front half stretched (D+C .3).  She makes this look
so easy, eh?  Her Shushunova at the end is still the highest I've
ever seen anyone do - horizontally a good 4 feet off the ground.

In the junior finals, 14 year old Mary Elise Ray continued to
demonstrate the depth of the Hill's Angels team winning bars and
floor with impeccable execution.  A fall on her front tuck on
beam kept her out of the medals there, but on vault she placed a
close fourth as many of the junior finalists had noticeably weaker
"different" vaults. (Oh, BTW Guys, I looked up in my Code and the
penalty for doing the same vault in Competition III is 1.00 off the
averaged score of both vaults.  Shannon Johnson and Lisa Campagnolo
might've taken the hit for this.)

There's some hot moves down at the Flamengo club in Rio! No not a nightclub
-- a gym club! I personally enjoyed the Brazilians.  The juniors, 11 year
old Daniele Hipolito and 13 year old Ursula Flores, had great bar sets.
Flores does a Gienger shoot over to handstand and a double front tuck
dismount Hipolito does a Tkatchev counter straddle back to handstand
and a nice tight double layout flyaway.  Senior Soraya Carvalho showed
Boguinskaya-like style and artistry on beam and floor, where she placed
third and second, respectively.

Also to note, Gymnix junior Julie Beaulieu threw a tres beau double layout
full-out flyaway in warm-ups (but crashed it in competition).  Hope she
eventually gets this Coded, eh!

Well, it's getting late.  Chris and Dory should be home by now too, so look
for more news from them!

For now, I've just got the medallists and their scores for you.  The
printed output seems to be somewhat Swiss-cheesed and is missing scores
from girls who only competed on 1 event %*}.  Please stay tuned.

Subject: Gymnix - Junior AA commentary (long)

Okay, it's very late here, but I'm going to give it a shot anyway...
So, Grace already posted some of the highlights, but I'll add
some of my own.  First, the juniors.
Well, the junior meet started on a bit of a down, since I found
out right at the start that our top Junior, Sarah Running, undoubtedly
the most talented and promising gymnast our country has ever known, has
quit the sport.  She is so talented and probably could have won this
meet.  It's possible she'll be back, she's still young, who knows?
ANyway, back to the actual meet... I don't have the actual results in
front of me, so the order of my comments don't necessarily reflect the
order of finish.
Hill's Angels presented four strong junior girls, and Mary Elise
Ray is particulalry impressive, so it looks like Kelli Hill should be on
the national scene for a while in the future.  Bars were particulary
strong for her, with a nice Tkatchev and one of the best double layouts
in the meet.  She also did a tucked 1/2 1/2 front V (as did two of her
teammates) which was solid, as well as a well completed 3twist on FX.
Jamie Schell, also of Hills, was quite good on bars, with a front-giant
to full pirouette, Jaeger (not consecutive, at least according to my
notes...I have to learn the FIG symbols...it would make this a lot
easier...) and a double front dismount.  She was unfortunate to miss her
punch front on BB which held her back a bit.
Elite Canada jr champ Claudine Pinard was solid, apart from a
missed punchy front on BB. She showed a nice Tkatchev on UB (and tried a
2front dismount in EF, which she missed, but it was nice to see her
trying some new things), and a solid 1/2 1/2 front tuck on V.  Her
tumbling was a bit weak (2.5 twist, front layout PF, front full), but
hopefully that will improve as she moves up to senior.
Abby Pearson from Bluewater had what appeared to me to be a good
meet, and she was horribly underscored for some reason.  She threw *2*
rulfovas on BB (she's the first and only canadian to have done this
skill), a nice Jaeger on UB, and a 3twist on FX.  The judges must not
like her for some reason, since I also thought she was ripped of at Elite
Canada.  Oh well....
The Brazilians were impressive, with Daniele Hipoloto throwing
one of the best double layouts off UB, as well as a Tkatchev.  Although
her 2twisting front on FX was good, as Grace mentioned, she had a scary
moment when on her last pass her 2.5 PF landed right on her back.  Her 3
twist earlier in the routine was good, as I recall, and she definitely
has talent for the future.  Her teammate Ursula Flores also showed good
work, especially on UB where her full pirouette to double front dimount
was way too coo.  She also did a RO ff 2tuck off BB, which must have been
good, since I didn't say otherwise in my notes.
Other brightspots included Kate Richardson of BC, who is *so*
tiny (no taller than the V horse) who did a nice tucked front there, and
2 ffs to 2 tuck off BB.  Erin Dooley of Hill's did a neat handspring rudi
off BB (sorry I didn't get any notes on the other Hill's girl...Is
Christine Mary Elise's sister?).  Megan Dash of Saskatchewan had a good
meet, but - Dory is going to kill me for this - I didn't take any notes
on her routines.  Off the top of my head, I recall a front full PF and
2.5 twist on FX, and a tucked front vault?  In any case, she is one to
watch for in the future.
Those are basically all of the notes I have for the juniors.  I'd
like to say that while Julie Bealieu had a rough meet, she is one to
watch for and has much potential IMHO.  I'm hoping, for the sake of the
progress of the sport in this country, (or should I say survival?) that
the Canadian coaches are just taking things slowly?  I hope that they
have big things in store for these kids.  It seems like they have
potential (ie Julie's attempt at a layout full-out UB dismount - Grace,
wouldn't that be named after Diaz already?).
Sorry for the disorder of this post, it's 3 a:m here, and I had a
5 1/2 hour train ride home tonight and I'm tired.  I'll post some notes
from the senior meet tomorrow...
                Chris.
