Re: The U.S. Classic (Qualifying)
So, who exactly comprised the eight
gymnasts who went to Worlds?
All in all, we ended up with at least nine
athletes who were designated
as team members since
Chow and Dawes were injured.

Re: The U.S. Classic
Anyone who competed at World Champonships,
including the traveling alternate,
are
pre-qualified to USA Championships and therefore do not need to compete
at a Classic meet. Some of the other top names may be a
little injured and
not want to risk a bigger
injury and will petition to USA's. The girl I
coach,
Shannon Bowles, qualified from the American Classic. She is going to
the US Classic and will be doing AT LEAST compulsories. She
will do some and
perhaps all optionals
depending on how she feels. It is important to have the
judges
look at your routines to help measure improvement but it is not worth
an injury that could keep her out of USA's.
Alot of the kids are pretty sore by this point in the
season. We try to get
them to peak at the right
time and that is at USA's. Having pre-qualified,
the
US Classic is just not that important right now.
As a note, a few kids
from Canada and Brazil will be competing at Classics as
invited
guests. They will not receive any awards.

MUKHINA
I just got a really neat book from SPORTS ILLUSTRATED called
The Complete Book
of the Summer Olympics. In it
there is a description of the move that Mukhina
broke her spine doing. "...sixteen
days before the opening of the Moscow
Olympics, Mukhina
was practicing her floor exercise when she missed a one-and-a
half-turn salto with a 540-degree
twist and broke her spine."
I don't suppose anyone else has ever tried
this?!!! I've never seen it!

Help, I need videos!!!!
Hey ya'll!
I have a
desperate cry for help. I am in
college and was unalble to
tape
1996 American Cup, 1996 Kodak Invitational, and 1996 Women's NCAA's.
If you
have any old tapes I would love them too.
If you want to trade I
have almost everything from 1990(most) to 1996. I am also looking for
anything unique you may have to share. I am definately
willing to pay for
all cost, especially if the
picture is clear. I am really picky
with that.
Thanks for your help, write back if you can help out.
Thanks,
DEAN

MAG: Perfect 10 in state high school meet
Hello all,
I just
got home from the Illinois High School State Boy's Gymnastics meet. And,
wow, I saw history being made. In event finals sophomore Josh Levin from
Glenbard West
High School (Glen Ellyn, IL) received a perfect 10 for his pommel
horse routine!! It was incredible.
As a freshman
last year, Josh set a new Illinois high school record on pommels
and he set a new one again this year. Yesterday, Josh became state
all-around
champion. And his Glenbard
West team became state champions for the first time
since
1983.
Next year Josh plans on competing at the national level. This
youngster is
someone to keep an eye on.

MAG Tim Weaver of New Holland, PA
Hello all,
I was going
through storage boxes yesterday looking for things to put out at a
garage sale and found some old copies of IG magazine from
1992. In the February
issue there is mention of
the Tim Weaver Invitational in Hanover, Pennsylvania.
Tim was a Class
II gymnast at Positive Fitness Gymnastics of New Holland, PA.
According to
the article in IG Tim was in an accident in August, 1990, which
left him paralyzed from the neck down. The invitational was
organized to help
defray medical expenses.
Anyway,
does anyone know what has happened to Tim since that time? He was 15 at
the time of the accident and, therefore, should be around 21
now. His plans were
to go into judging and
coaching. Has he recovered any mobility since that time
and
did he actually go to college? Just wondering if there was any follow up
to
this story.

Speaking of follow-ups, about one year ago there was a short
discussion about a male gymnast who had no legs and how to
work out a
training program for him. Over the summer it was reported that
things were
going pretty much as well as could be
expected, if I recall correctly.
This
post reminded me of that; does anybody
know how things are going now?
