A Silly Article
Hi everybody,
There was an amusing short article
in the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday
the
tenth. The headline was "U.S. Struggles at World Gymnastics". What?
They
referred to the women's AA as a day of
frustration for the U.S. gymnasts.
Maybe for Shannon Miller, but I'd think
Dom M. and Kerri Strug should be
extactic over both finishing in
the top seven.
They said China was struggling too because they settled
for three silver
medals the first day of event
finals. Ha! They won a team gold and silver
and
the men's AA gold! How long has it been since they've done that well?
They
even mentioned Yuri Chechi not being able to get
pizza as if it
seriously put a damper on his world
championships. Talk about focusing on
the
negative! They said he won the rings gold but neglected to mention that
it's his third in a row.
The weakest part of the
article is the fact that they didn't mention any
winners
except Yuri Chechi and Li Donghua
(who they mentioned because it was
bad news to the
Chinese since he's now on the Swiss team). All they talked
about was what the U.S. and China didn't win. At least
mention the U.S.
women's team bronze!
If
anyone has an e-mail address for the Chronicle, please let me know so I
can pass my thoughts on to them.

Yes, it sounds like a silly article.
I
don't suppose that was Joan Ryan that wrote for the San Francisco
Chronicle. The distorted information has a familiar
ring to it. ;^)
Check out the

coffin who also wrote for the SF Chronicle.

Well
I think (I'm no expert in rules and regulations!) for the mens
only
they have white lines on the landing mat
according to distance and they
are +0.2, +0.1, 0,
-0.1 and -0.2. So if you land beyond the furthest
line
you'll get +0.2 bonus, and landed before the closest line you get
-0.2.
They don't have this for women though they've been talking about
putting this in (but they haven't).

It's
a not a scandal in considering gymnastics as a remunerative sport. If
Svetlana
could have the chance to take money thanks to her 16th AA place,
why not? For example, all the World's apparatus winners are
participating in
theese
hours at two exhibitions in Tokyo and Osaka, taking 4,000 yen each. I
think they deserve it.
About Bogie, she has to
decide if following with Brown's or going back to
Karolyi's.

press) about the qualifying
mechanism to Atlanta.
- the whole top 12
teams;
- 3 individuals from the teams ranked 13, 14 and 15 in '95 Sabae WGC;
- 2 individuals
from the teams ranked 16, 17 and 18 in '95 Sabae WGC;
- 3 individuals chosen by each of the 4 Continental
Associations (i.g.,
African Union will send to Atlanta the top
3 of AA in Harare) = total of 12;
- 4 wild cards for individuals chosen by
FIG's Technical Committee, IOC or
the Association of the National
Olympic Committees. It could be the case
of Aleksey Demianov,
the rus-croatian who missed the qualification to
the
rings final beacuse
of an unbelievable mistake during the compulsories
(he
stopped only 1 second,
instead of the requested two, on cross) but is
one
the best competitors in that
apparatus.

Ludivine Furnon
Yesterday's
_l'Equipe_ ran a little story about Ludivine Furnon (FX
bronze medalist in Sabae).
- She's 15 years old, 1.42 cm and 36
kg. At the '94
French Natls.
she was
1st on B and 3rd on UB and FX.
-
Her current coach is Nelu Pop, a Romanian, and
her first coaches
were Sergiu and Tatiana Popa (Romanians who used to coach Gogean).
- She began gymnastics 3.5 years ago
(!). Only 14 months after she
began,
she placed 2nd at the French Jr. Nationals.
- She currently trains in her hometown of
Nimes but will transfer
to the center in Marseille in January.
- She was the first alternate for the FX
final but got to compete
when Shannon Miller withdrew.
- For a while, Furnon
was in the lead but "I didn't believe it would
last,
because 3 more girls were still to compete."

I'm surprised that discussion hasn't
swamped this forum yet. :) Oh, well,
here are a
couple of quick comments.
1)The Chinese men
and women certainly have a lot to look forward to in
Atlanta. Could we
possibly see one team sweep both titles yet again, only
this
time its the Chinese? The men certainly are quite sharp, and the
Chinese
women are only about one step away from the gold. The women
especially intrigued me, from what I saw. Sharp, quick
movements, clean
lines, amplitude,
risk...mmm...they have it all.
2)The US men
and women will have long hauls on their home court. The women
will have a lot of pressure on them, but I forsee a silver or bronze in
their
future. A gold is possible, but they will need to hit everything, and
step it up a notch from this year. With Borden, Dawes and
Powell back, they
will have a strong team, but I
don't think they have quite enough.
3)A quick
congratz to Moceanu for the
silver on beam. I'm happy to see her
get the
international recognition before the games. 5th all-around, silver
on beam, who did this in 1991...Tatiana Gutsu.
The same? Could be, if
Moceanu continues to clean
up her form.

Previous

or WWW.

directory is updated at my
convenience (ie once a week or so) with digests.
You can reach
this via the Gymn pages on the WWW and clicking

facilitate this buy putting a link directly to the ftp site on
the Title IX pages.

At any rate, I wanted to announce that a new
gymnastics-related
listserv is up and
running. Has been, for a couple
weeks now. It is
hosted by the Collegiate Gymnastics Assocation,
which is the men's
gymnastics collegiate coaches
organization. The listserv is
intended
to facilitate announcements and
discussion concerning Title IX, gender
equity,
amateur Olympic sports' existence at the collegiate level,
etc. It was
started because of the serious threat that men's
collegiate
gymnastics faces in the USA. The
listserv is not limited
to gymnastics -- there are
some wrestlers on the listserv too.
Any
interested in the issues are welcome to
join.
To subscribe to the listserv send an email addressed to
listserv@psuvm.psu.edu, and in the BODY, write
sub CGA-L Full Name
And as I specified in my last msg, back issues are
available.

I'm charmed to hear about
the exhibitions. But 4,000 yen is
about $50
Canadian (about 75 Yen = Cdn $1), not
even enough for train fare from Tokyo
to Osaka, or
two copies of the ORU (Japanese origami magazine). And at
least one-tenth of what figure skaters get.

worlds questions
Hi,
I have a question
regarding qualifying to the all-around from the team
competition. Will there be a way for gymnasts who are
not competing all
8 events in the team portion of the Olympics to still
qualify into the
all-around. It is conceivable that a country, like
the US women had last
week, in which only 3
gymnasts have the chance to make it to the AA
because
they are the only ones who compete each event. I
think it
would be very unfortunate for someone like Kerri Strug
to get
taken out of one event, and thus not have
the chance to make it to the
AA.
Someone like Moceanu or Miller could fall in
the team competition
and still qualify over her if
she had to count a zero. With all
of the
politics in team coaching, I would hate to
see the more powerful coaches
securing their
gymnasts all-around births merely by the way they organize
the team line up.

If they
don't have enough, then how can they win a team medal of any kind?
That doesn't make much sense.

Even though the US will
profit from the home advantage, any team that hopes
to
take the gold will need to hit everything.
And I think that the US women
could have
placed higher in Japan if Dawes, Borden, Miller, etc. weren't
injured. So
maybe they don't have to "step it up a notch" but just recover
from their injuries and the team will be stronger
immediately.

I
don't think so. There is too much that needs to be cleaned up for her to
be
considered equal to Mo, Podkopayeva,
Khorkina, Kochetkova,
Miller, Borden,
Phelps, etc., etc., etc., who are all
better in every way. I think
that
Moceanu is an excellent example of how
having a famous coach can sometimes
earn you extra
points with the judges...

I know that this
topic has probably been discussed to it's end when
Joan Ryan's book came
out, but i am relatively new on the list so mplease
forgive me for my
comment if it's already been discussed.
Everyone seemed to
have nothing but
criticism over her book, but i for one reallly enjoyed
hearing her
point of view. Afterall,
what is this forum: a place where
everyone can
express his or her point, without having
cynical sarcasm about
her particular
point. I for one do not believe
that Karoyli has never said
anything
to any of those girls about their weight.
Just because Ryan's book
is one sided does
not mean that Kristy Philips, Erica Stokes or the Henrich
family was lying.
so before the one of you makes a rude comment
about her
particular viewpoint, take a minute to
consider that maybe she is telling the
truth, and
maybe we all do need to look at our beloved sport a little closer.
