Re: WWW article on Cal's Trent Wells
Is this some kind of move like a Manna (a V-type position where your legs are
pushed up to a horizonal
position?)?

Re: GYMN-L Digest - 11 Apr 1996 to 12 Apr 1996
I thought when the comentators at the american
cup where talking about
chousonova's
routine, they where meaning, she was capable of so much
more,
and perhaps where dumbing down the routines. I am very glad that
older woman are now taking part in gymnastics. Yes, younger
girls do have
a place, but for the sport in
general, I think that the older girls are
giving
gymnastics a good name, they have an artistic ability that only
experence can give a person. Keri
shrug seems to be rising to her
potential, even
though she's considered 'old' perhaps she's like kathy
johnson, who didn't rise to her
own until she was about twenty.
I've seen several gymnasts from other
countries compete in the ncaa's.
Does
anyone know if they've retired from international competion?
I
watched the big 10 (I don't know what the tital for the ncaa regon that
georga
and bama are in) on television, and noticed several competors from
Canada. I had thought that kim kelly
had retired after what happened at
92, but it's good to see her at ncaa level. I'm glad that she
didn't give
up the sport entirely. Though I think
the scores are horribly inflated in
the NCAA's.
What scoring level do they use? level 8 or 9? I saw
one
rutine that had a
major break and a huge step at the end and got a 9.85.
Does anyone know if
there will be prelims at this next weeks worlds?

Wanted Olympic Tickets!
Desperately seeking two tickets for all
Rhythmic Gymnastics events in
Athens GA Aug 1 - 4.
Does anyone
have any ideas as to how we can get them? We did all the
"normal" avenues -- the Olympic lottery and were finally
sent our $ back 2
months later. My daughter and I, both professional
members of USAG
Rhythmics have
even volunteered to help and still nothing yet. She is a
member
of the National Rhythmic Team and wants to be there to support
which ever Individual gymnast represents the USA and of
course the group.
If she makes it that is another story, but for now we are
realistic and
would like to be there after being
involved in the sport for 9 years!
Thank you for your
suggestions.

Are
any gymnasts scheduled to be on the Oprah Winfrey show that
have spoken out about gymnastics before. I hope the producers got some big
name gymnasts to be on the show to speak for (like Betty Okino, Mary Lou
Retton) and against (Chelle Stack, Erica
Stokes). Like Mary Lou has
said
time and time again "You don't here any
complaints from the winners!"

adult gymnastics classes
Sharon T asked about adult gymnastics classes and Dean
Dryer gave
some very good suggestions, I would like to add one
more:
Your
local college may have classes through the campus recreation
department which are open to the general public. Even if there are only
children's classes, expressing interest in an adult class
may be enough for
them to start one. While attending UC San Diego I joined
the campus rec
department to coach existing
children's classes and when I went to the
dept.
administration and suggested offering adult classes it was as easy as
that-- they were put in place. Now there are several levels of
all-around
classes along with tumbling, strength, and
trampoline classes.
Anyhow, it might be worth a shot--

Full Out Twisting
This type of twisting is obviously
possible, we have all seen it. It is
totally
possible within the laws of mechanics.
It is simply borrowed angular
momentum from
the transverse axis (flipping) rotation to the longitudinal
axis (twisting) rotation. The gymnast borrows this by changing
the
distribution of the inertial moment around the
center of mass. This is
accomplished either by developing a tilt, or by lenthening one side of the
body
with respect to the other with a
side arch, or raising/lowering one
arm.
There
is a lot of action/reaction going on here, and the math is really,
REALLY
complicated. Any physicist who says
it isn't possible is probably a
lousy
mathematician, plus they obviously haven't sat down and watched slow
motion video.
