Gymnast Bios
I was at the Library of Congress doing research, and
while waiting for books
decided to search for biographys on gymnasts. Aside from the ones that have
already been mentioned, here's what I found:
Cathy
Rigby, by Linda J. Altman (1975)
Joan Moore Rice, by Linda J. Altman
(1975)
Eastern superstar, Olga Korbut, by
Gwen Evans (1976)
Gymnastics happy superstar, Olga Korbut,
by Paula Taylor (1977)
Nadia Comaneci by Gloria Kiklowitz
(1977) (also books published this year
with the
same title by Thomas Braun, Constance Van Brunt, and S. H. Burchard)
Nadia
of Romania, by Marion Connock (1977)
Winners in gymnastics, by Frank Litsky
(1978). Bio sketches of
Nadia, Olga,
Nelli Kim, Andrianov,
Tsukahara, Conner, more.
Kurt Thomas,
international winner, by Nancy Robison (1980)
Gymnastics, the new era,
by Mort Engel (1980)
Has different bios of gymnasts
of
the time, such as Nelli Kim, Shaposhnikova,
etc.
The young gymnasts, by Lyn Moran (1979). Various gymnast of the
era.
Soviet gymnastics stars, by Vladimir Golubev
(1979) (translated)
Lyudmila Turishcheva, by
Vladimir Golubev (1979) (translated)
Perfect
balance: the story of an elite
gymnast, by Lynn Haney (1979).
Follows the career of a young American
gymnast as she prepares for the 1980
Olympics to be held
in Moscow. Includes profiles
of several other prominent
gymnasts.
Carol
Johnston, the one-armed gymnast (!), by Pete Donovan (1978). A bio of
the Canadian gymnast who won All-American honors in 1978
despite her physical
handicap.
Mary Lou Retton, 3 different books of this title by George Sullivan,
Rosemary
Washington, and Hal Lundgren (1985)
Mary
Lou Retton and the new gymnasts, by Herma Silverstein (1985). Bios of
new
Olympic gymnasts, with an emphasis on Mary Lou Retton.
The golden girls of Bulgaria, by Neshka Robeva (1985).
No details on who is
covered in this
one.
Li Ning, by Keng-Kuei
Feng (1987).
This *may* be in Chinese.
Olga Korbut,
by Wayne R. Coffey (1992)
There were others, but they were untranslated.
Except for the books on
Turishcheva, Li Ning, and the Bulgarians, I have seen all of these books
at
various libraries, and I would suggest going
that route to obtain them
instead of trying the
local bookstore, since most are probably out of print.
With few exceptions,
all were cataloged as juvenile literature, so I would
try
the childrens/young adults sections initially.

New Coach
My daughter's gym, SPLITZ, located just outside of
Sacramento in Loomis
California, recently hired a new coach to assist
coaching the
level 8-elite program. Head coach Sam Shaw hired "Hike ?". Hike
is his
1st name and I don't yet have his last name. Hike was coaching
the
Armenian National Team in a competition here in the US recently.
The team
left and he "stayed". I
was wondering if anyone had "any"
information
on Hike. Does he have any
reputation at all? Any notable
accomplishments?
I was told that he once coached one of the world's
best female gymnasts (Russian?). Does anyone know who that was?
Anyway,
Hike is here. He speaks no English
yet but is still an
effective communicator through
hand signals and hands-on coaching.
Thanks,
Mark
