Hey guys!  Does anyone know what happened to Phoebe Mills?  Last I
heard, she was platform diving and was supposed to go to the Olympics
but she vanished.  You could E-Mail me privately.

Thanks in advance!

Subject: US Women's Team at Worlds

According to an item in Monday's NY Times, the US women's team for
the Worlds in Puerto Rico will be Moceanu (who already had the
spot because of her silver on beam at Sabae), and the top 3
finishers from the Classic: Phelps, Dawes, and Chow.
However, the article also said that of these four, only Dawes
had confirmed she was going to Worlds.  The others will see
how it fits into their Olympic training schedule before
they decide.  (This might also be a reason why Strug and
Miller did not compete at Classic.  Anyone know what's up
with Borden?)  The article didn't say who would go if
any of these four declined her spot.

Now that Worlds is no longer a biannual event in odd-numbered
years, I wonder if we will see more instances of heavy hitters
skipping a Worlds that happens just before the Olympics.

Aren't inverted and eagle grip giants the same thing?

My daughter is interested in continuing her gymnastics in college.  She is
now a high school freshman.  Competing Level 7 and possibly moving to Level
8 next year.  Where would we obtain a list of schools that have gymnastics
programs and how would she go about possibly getting a scholarship.  We
know that there are Div I, II, and III schools but that is about all.

Any information that anybody can give us would be of great help.

You may e-mail me privately at:  ***@SWOSU.edu

Subject: twisting vaults

The description of the Am. Classic Jrs competition mentioned a few
handspring-double-twist vaults--what start value is that?  And for
curiosity's sake, what is highest start value a gymnast can get for
a vault that does not include a salto?

I was wondering if a gymnast who didn't qualify to Nationals at the American
Classic still has a chance.  I was upset to see that Katie Teft withdrew
after compulseries (did she get injured AGAIN??) because I know she'd been
working toward making the Olympic team.  Did she lose her olny chance?
Thanks,
Liz
ps. could some one post how to get to that dalnet gymnastics chat and what
time?  thanks.

No, Rachele, you are not alone! I think everybody i've ever met calls
those jumps (tuck jump with one leg extended) a fish jump. If anything,
it's much easier on the tounge. However: the kids i coached and i could
never figure out why they were called fish jumps, so we unanimously
decided to rename them (because we could) Fwompdinks. If you added a turn
they became fwomp 1/2's, fwomp fulls. Ahh....back to my own little world.

Okay, ya'll.
I have gotten a TON of e-mail from gymners asking how to connect to the
bi-weekly gymn chat.
I am attempting to compile a complete statement of everything you need
to know about the official Gymn irc chat.

1.  You need to download irc software to connect to the irc chat.  You
cannot get to the chat using Netscape.  The 2 most popular irc softwares
are "Global Chat" and "mIRC".  You can download mIRC from:
http://mars.superlink.net/user/mook/mirc

2.  Once you have downloaded the software, connect to a dalnet server.
I posted a list of dalnet servers about a week ago, but here is an
abbreviated version:
irc.dal.net
igc.dal.net
phoenix.dal.net
groucho.dal.net
toronto.dal.net

2.  When you have connected to a dalnet server, join channel #Gymn

3.  The official Gymn irc chats are Sundays at 2:00PM EST and Mondays at
10:00PM EST.

I hope this helps!!!  If you have anymore questions, though, feel free
to e-mail me.
By the way, some of us Gymners are on other evenings as well, just
chatting, so if you are bored or in the mood for a gym chat, feel free
to drop by.  A few of us are on #Gymn fairly regularly after about 10PM
EST.

Before I reveal my ignorance, could someone tell me whether *Cottbus Cup* is
the correct name and correct spelling?  In 1988, would it have been
sponsored by East Germany or West Germany?

Also, I haven't been able to find the e-mail address for USGF  (I guess
that's USA Gymnastics now).  Could someone send it to me?  I've run up my
phone bill enough trying to talk to them!

Thanks,
Chris

Subject: NCAA meet

This article, concerning the dual meet between  The University of Alabama
(Crimson Tide) and The University of Kentucky (UK Gym Kats), appeared in
Sunday's Lexington (Kentucky) Herald-Leader, our local newspaper.

>No. 2 Tide nips Kats, But UK still comes out ahead.
>
>     Sometimes a loss isn't such a bad thing.
>     In fact sometimes a loss actually can help a team -- it can
>even move a squad up in the national rankings.
>     That could be the case for the No.11 University of Kentucky
>gymnastics team which dropped a 196.95-195.4 decision to No. 2
>Alabama last night in Memorial Coliseum.
>     Despite the loss, the Gym Kats (2-4,2-1 Southeastern
>Conference) recorded their second-highest score in school history
>and set a team record on the uneven bars with a 49.225 performance.
>     More important, UK proved its mettle against the
>traditionally  tough Crimson Tide, which was the  country's
>highest-rated squad until losing to now-No.l Georgia last week.
>     "This is going to definitely move us up in the rankings,"
>Coach Leah Little said. "This should put us well up in the
>pack, maybe even around a fifth or sixth. I think then people are
>going to know we've done it week after week."
>     Little had said before the meet that UK's goal was to stay
>with the  Tide and to prove it truly deserved its national
>position.
>     The Gym Kats did just that. They beat Alabama on the uneven
>bars and tied in the floor exercise. UK senior Jenny Hansen, the
>three-time defending NCAA all-around champion, captured the all-
>around title with a score of 39.675, and junior Robin Ewing claimed
>second place all-around with 39.275. Alabama's Marna Neubauer
>placed third with 39.25.
>     Hansen took first in the vault (9.95) and in the floor
>exercise (9.95) and tied for first with Alabama's Stephanie Woods
>on the uneven bars (9.9). She tied for third with the Tide's Shay
>Murphy on the balance beam with 9.875.
>     Hansen said she was particularly excited about her showing on
>the bats and on the beam.
>     "In my first meet in the Bahamas, I fell two times in each of
>those events, so it's been shaky coming back," she said.
>     But Hansen's victories took something of a back seat in light
>of the team's accomplishments. While Hansen, an eight-time national
>champion, is well-known for her exploits, the Gym Kats wanted to
>distinguish themselves as being a major contender in a conference
>that boasts five of its six teams in the top 20.
>     UK is aiming for a trip to the NCAA championships for the
>first time as an entire unit.
>     "We still lost, but this is the best we've ever done (against
>Alabama)," sophomore Whitney Ellis said. "Hansen came up to us and
>told us that Alabama's coach came up to her and said, 'We'll see
>you down in Alabama' for nationals. If the top coach in the nation
>is saying that, we're obviously up there."
>     The balance beam could be the Gym Kats' biggest obstacle to
>staying up among the nation's elite. Two Gym Kats fell during their
>routines, one of which counted in UK's final score in that event.
>So far, UK has not had a dual meet without any falls from the beam.
>     "We reduced the mistakes that we're making, but I said prior
>to the meet that we were going to have to be right on to have a
>chance at it, and if you look at it the mistakes we made - the sit-
>down vault and the fall off the beam -- would have put us right in
>there," Little said.
>     Fortunately for the Gym Kats, the team counted three 9.8s and
>a 9.9 on the bars, an event in which UK has been doing unexpectedly
>well.

Regarding Rachele's post about International Gymnast feedback.

You'll have to excuse the apparent tardiness of this reply, but I've only
just received the December 95 issue, and I have to say I was extremely
disappointed with the coverage of the World Championships.  Only 2/3rds of
the issue was devoted to the biggest gym competition of the year!  Whatever
happened to the days of '89 and '91, where the WHOLE issue, if not two, were
devoted to World Championships.  I couldn't believe the lack of coverage of
teams outside the first six or seven, including photographs.

OK, so I know the majority of people are interested in the top teams,
including me, but the magazine is called "International" Gymnast.

Sorry if this topic has been covered before.

Yo Kerry,

You *can* get to IRC using Netscape, as long as you download Netscape Chat.
It's available on the same pages where you download Netscape itself. It's
only available for Windows at the moment.

Since Rachele posted that message about IG liking to hear our comments
about their magazine, I thought I'd mention that I really liked the
"Decoding the Code" articles in 1993.  I hope that IG runs similar
articles for the new code in 1997.
