Ivankov successfully defended the men's title, and Gina Gogean is the
defending women's champion.

Subject: Why the Secrecy?

Dear gymners

I  was  watching  Eurosport's  coverage  of  the  Men's  European
apparatus  finals  yesterday  when  Monica  Phelps  (commentator)
talked  of  getting Scherbo in the box and having a chat  to  him
before  the competition was over. She said it was really  against
the rules but they went ahead and did it after all.

Does   anyone  know why that was so wrong?   Athletics  (track  &
field) commentators frequently talk to competitors before, during
and after events.

I'm very interested if anyone knows why

Thanks

Vic

I am just curious to know who used the music to "Gremlins" at the 88
trials.  Someone asked the question last week, but I did not ever see an
answer.

Yes, Tim Weaver usually makes his appearance at the Hanover's Tim Weaver
Invitational and speaks sort of a motivational speech for everyone.  The last
time I saw him, he was in a wheelchair with a brace on his neck (at 1994's
meet).  If I remember right, I think he attended college, and I am pretty
sure he is a judge now.  I think I remember him saying that the accident was
on a rings dismount???

Subject: TV alert for Spanish Speakers and intro

For those Spanish speakers out there who receive the Univision Spanish language
channel (free in most major cities, I think), the news show "Primer Impacto"
is going to have a feature on gymnastics on May 14th.  I believe the show
runs nationally at 5 pm EST but check local listings just to be sure.  The
teaser on the feature mentioned that they were going to speak to the parents
of one of the only Hispanic-American gymnasts (I missed the name but I'm
going to assume they mean Julissa Gomez) as well as other gymn parents.  This
is most likely going to be another Joan Ryan-esque kind of feature but since
coverage of gymn is rare on Spanish lang. tv, I thought I'd share.  In fact,
this is only the 2nd time I can remember seeing a feature on gymnastics on
Spanish language tv (the first was a fantastic 15 min report on Peru's
national training center - featuring whole floor routines by some of Peru's
top gymnasts).

While I'm at it, let me introduce myself.  I'm 19 and a sophomore in college.
I trained in gymnastics for 8 years before quitting to concentrate on ballet
(which I quit a few years ago).  When I first started gymnastics, we were still
using the IV-I system and I managed to make it all the way to class II.
Anyone know what that would make me in today's system?  7?  My favorite
gymnasts have always been the Russians because my first coach was an emigre
from Moscow who believed that the Russians were the absolute best and she was
the type of coach that you did not argue with 8-)  My current favorites are
Dina K. and Grigory M. I've been on this list for almost a year and enjoy it
immensely...

Adios,
Diane

Subject: Gymnastics on AOL

I saw a posting yesterday advertising the 3 gymnastics AVI's on the AOL
system. I downloaded 2 of those. One was pretty decent (The Shannon Miller
one). The other (Nadia Comeneci) was really too dark to see. I need to
advise you that each one of those files is around 1 MB. That means if you
have a 14.4kbs modem, it will take around 20 minutes to download. AOL
charges it's users $2.95 a hour for all online time (including downloading)
after they have used over 5 hours of time.

I have uploaded several files related to gymnastics. These are 3 gym pics (2
Shannon Miller, 1 Dominque Moceanu), and a text files containing lots of
information on gymnastics on the internet. If you are AOL, subscribers, you
can find all these files in the SPORTS section, under the GRANDSTAND, in
OTHER SPORTS FILES. I thought the text file listing gym resources on the
internet would be the most useful item. It contains an extensive list of WWW
sites, FTP, and other info. But I guess everybody likes the Dominique
Moceanu pic the best, since it has been downloaded the most.

If I find there is a great interest in gym on AOL, I will upload more pics
and stuff. The scheduled gym chat on Sundays nights seems to be a bust. Very
few people, if any, show up. There are more people in the scheduled karate
chat that immediately after the gym chat in the same room. Maybe it is
because not many people know about it. Well, here's the word-

Gymnastics chat- AOL- Sundays 8-9pm EST in the GRANDSTAND Arena.

I think other gym fans who are AOL members should take greater participation
in what's available on AOL. They have a gymnastics BB and a gymnastics's
coaches' BB, plus several areas to upload and download files. They also have
several gym pics available in the ABC sports area (women's pics). There are
some interesting, enlightening, and some times, entertaining notes posts on
the gym BB. Those who don't visit are really missing out.

If history repeats itself, this Josh guy really will be one to watch.  Both
Bart Conner and Chris Waller won the Illinois High School State meet as
sophomores, and look what happened with them--both Olympians.  Does anyone
know if anyone else has won this meet as a sophmore since Chris?

Well I blew off tonights San Jose' Pride 96 planning meeting to make sure I
was home to tape the mens NCAAs.

The paper said it was supposed to be 90 minutes and be on at 9:30 PM.
All I saw was these tall goons bouncing a ball on the floor.
I think its some wierd game called wastebasket ball or something of the ilk.

I gave up on gymnastics and hadnt gotten up to turn off the tube, I was busy
adding up generator wattages.  Suddenly I hear the word "gymnastics".
I scrambled for the remote and flipped it into record.

So NCAAs were an hour late and only an hour long instead of 90 mins as promised.
So I want eveeryone now armed with this data to contact ESPN and tell them
what horrid creatures they are........ (evil grin)

In their defense, they DID televise the 2 nastiest crashes.
And Berkeleys Josh Birkelbaws crash on HB did not end coverage of his event.
They used his 20 sec composure time to slo mo the crash 3 times !

I noticed they miked the base of the ring frame and the base of the HB supports.
As both structures flexed they sounded different that from the stands.
>From the stands you hear them crreak.  ESPNs mike style makes them sound like
the mechnism that flushes your toilet with all the clanking.

What was the best was a chance to watch Berkeley's Wells doing the PB "freak"
in slo mo.  It is truly waycool !

On a slightly different tack, is anyone out there interested in participating
in an experiment for next years college season ?
If you are on a sun and your network gateway to the net will let you do
"multicast" (ask you sysad) I can get you the software for free to do it.
Contact me by email and keep it off the main list.
PC users, I will be able to help later, (I know the software is out there
I just havent had time to learn how to make it work).

In a word I want to experiment with broadcasting meets on the internet.
I got the hardware & software to do it now.  I just need volunteers to watch
the feed.  I also need to see what gymnastics looks like at 12 frames per sec.
